for his comment - 'southerners are so much more wealthy and thinner than northerners who in general are uneducated with regard to good food' .

WEll, I disagree about the education, but I do think it's true about the weight.

I went to Yorkshire on my holidays once. BIG mistake. Iwirrshiiiite and I couldn't get a decent cup of coffee anywhere.

I saw a lot of fat children. That doesn't prove anything though. But everywhere I looked there were children digging in to chips or icecreams etc.

APparently M&S order more size 8s for their London branches than they do for branches outside of London.

hifi · 15/06/2008 15:42

i am northerner down south, when i return home im dismayed by the choice of food. when shopping with my mum i notice the supermarkets dont have such a wide choice of fruit and veg. you do get better choice in the asian supermarkets though.

i think mainly its the lack of cultral diversion where mum lives, asian or white.

was talking to somebody high up in public health today
he's from north of Watford most certainly
he says the gist is true

Janos · 15/06/2008 17:07

The divide is more likely to be due to poverty than anything else, that's the real bar to healthy eating.

And broadly speaking the north is poorer than the south.

Poor people are often a target for this kind of asinine sneering.

Anyway Sandy quick summary from a chippy northern - your mate is an arrogant tosser

Janos · 15/06/2008 17:08

Also, I live in Scotland where they deep fry everything edible he he.

Twelvelegs · 15/06/2008 17:52

Aren't there more cities up North and therefore more impoverished city culture, ie working men's clubs, pub culture, etc.

Ambi · 15/06/2008 17:53

Though I've found Northerners much more accommodating and friendly (another sweeping generalisation )

stuffitllama · 15/06/2008 18:02

It's not necessarily poverty.

wotulookinat · 15/06/2008 18:10

We must be the exception to the rule then. We are far better off financially living in Yorkshire than we were in SE London and we can now afford to eat properly. The difference for us is not having to spend most of your wages on rent.
Ambi, I agree, people are far nicer up here. When I do go back down south to visit my mum, I am shocked at how rude people are.

edam · 15/06/2008 18:13

Twelvelegs, this thread was caused by a Southerner dissing Northerners.

stuffitllama · 15/06/2008 18:21

Janos, I know you were being funny but deep frying everything is not due to poverty.

hifi · 15/06/2008 18:33

most of the people i know up north have more cash than us, also save up for things, not all, just the ones i know.

my mum scoffs when i say im having people around for supper, where they are its not done. kids go around for their tea but adults dont tend to. maybe that's why they arnt adventurous with food so lack of demand.
when we got married we had asparagus, most of the guests had never tried it before.

Janos · 15/06/2008 18:35

"deep frying everything is not due to poverty."

Absolutely not, imagine the cost of cooking oil for starters!

Sorry....

Twelvelegs · 15/06/2008 19:16

"...a Southerner...", just the one. I think you also said at 'we' (Southerners) sneer at Northerners it's just not true. It is also not true that Northerners are more friendly, although everywhere is more friendly than London (seems to be the same in every capital city, though).

SlackSally · 15/06/2008 19:23

As others have said, the health and wealth things are (very) broadly true. As a southener, I get annoyed with Northeners, or indeed other southeners, assuming that everywhere south of Watford is some kind of financial paradise, where everyone is privately educated and everyone lives surrounded by countryside. Or, even more, that 'the South' means London. Truro is further away from London than Manchester, for pity's sake.

Anglepoise · 15/06/2008 19:53

Take him to Cheshire and confuse him

sandy4 · 15/06/2008 19:57

i will take him, maybe leave him there, with a little kick to make me feel better

lol at Anglepoise. Once you've done Cheshire, how about Harrogate, or the West side of Sheffield?

Scootergrrrl · 16/06/2008 10:32

Jade Goody - a fine example of an educated southerner...

wotulookinat · 16/06/2008 11:03

Jade Goody was a fine example of someone who didn't give a sh*t about what people thought.

tengreenbottles · 16/06/2008 14:03
