To buy a sofa from Facebook

Has anyone bought a sofa off Facebook marketplace? I need a new sofa but dont want to spend thousands but dont want second hand either. Is it a scam or are any actually genuine?

If it’s Facebook marketplace then it’s usually second hand.
Or is it one of those warehouse companies selling through marketplace? I bought a chair from one of those and it was fine. Just a bit warehouse who bought surplus stock in bulk from other stores and sold it on.

It really depends on the place. Usually you go and see it and buy it in person so you’re not paying online and crossing your fingers for it to be delivered.

I mean the companies selling sofas on Facebook

They don’t arrange for you to visit and I wouldn’t be able to anyway it’s delivered then you pay cash

If it’s cash on delivery then that’s fine. You can refuse delivery if it is not as described. I wouldn’t send money beforehand.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/02/2026 17:22

Pay cash? Not for me. I would only pay by debit or credit card. If a company is not big enough to be able to work like this I wouldn't use them, I might miss a bargain but I am suspicious of everyone these days. 👀

Bake · 06/02/2026 17:26

If it's new from a company then I'd only but if I could pay by credit card, so you are covered by card protections. Cash on delivery sounds dodgy to me.

🤨 So you’d rather pay by card online and hope they deliver? Rather than see it and check it over and then pay on delivery. How odd.

Take a look at sofas in the RANGE household store. My granddaughter bought a really nice 3 seater which had raised leg rests on the outer 2 seats. Around £499

EmeraldShamrock000 · 06/02/2026 17:30

You can go to view the sofa. I bought a lovely corner sofa, the couple was moving back to EE. This sofa weighs a ton. I bought it for 800, they originally paid over 4000, it was 3 years old in great condition.

CleanSkin · 06/02/2026 17:36

Wherever you buy from, check that it has the fire safety label on from the original sale.
Second hand, or possibly new from a dodgy supplier, won’t have that guarantee of safety.

Chisbots · 06/02/2026 17:37

Just get a preloved one, much better for you.

I got a lovely leather one off ebay for £67.

I meant I am unable to travel to view them

Regardless of how you pay you should always check it over when delivered and reject it if there is an issue. If you pay by card, your credit card company will refund you if it falls apart in a month. If you’ve paid by cash you can wave your money goodbye.

Passaggressfedup · 06/02/2026 18:04

Yes. Got two 3 seaters from John Lewis for £150. They look new!

yeriknow · 06/02/2026 18:05

They will be poor quality.

If I were you I would buy a secondhand one in good condition.

I made the mistake of buying cheap sofas years ago, instantly regretted it. £500 down the drain.

But I also do not ever have thousands of pounds to buy good quality brand new.

My sofa just now is a Duresta, would have been very expensive brand new. Cost me £250 plus £50 for man with van to deliver.

It’s so comfortable and when I want to redecorate I can get the fabric recovered for a few hundred.

RosesAreRedVioletsAreBluee · 06/02/2026 18:06

I don’t want second hand but thanks for the suggestions. Does anyone have experience with actually using one of these companies?

OP posts:
OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 06/02/2026 18:10

Random Facebook companies are unlikely to give a quality product that lasts. If you want cheaper prices but new then you are better off going to IKEA

I wouldn't dismiss second hand. We got 2 matching sofas from eBay in hectic condition and clearly originally expensive with very solid frames. Cost us £20 and we had them for at least 10 years.

RosesAreRedVioletsAreBluee · 06/02/2026 18:13

I have a second hand sofa currently i dont want another one im not against second hand just want new this time.

I have successfully bought 2 large furniture items off marketplace but would not if I couldn't see them first. I'd also not pay anything until the agreed pickup time.

FirstdatesFred · 06/02/2026 18:17

Wouldn't trust anything new from Facebook market place, no. Very scammy.

If you want new, I'd consider dfs or sofology and interest free credit.

My 2nd hand sofa from Facebook is good but transport can often be an issue.

user2848502016 · 06/02/2026 18:19

Yes we did, it was 3 years old when we bought it 9 years ago now and it’s still fine!
It was a much nicer one that we would have afforded new, and also had young DC then so obviously were going to have spillages and accidents so didn’t want to spend a fortune.
It was from an older lady who needed a different style due to mobility issues

I can’t get credit so buying from those places isnt an option sadly

Ah thats second hand I mean brand new from a company, lots of them advertising on Facebook now

OP posts:
Talkingfrog · 06/02/2026 18:25

I think you would need to do your research on who the company was that was selling first. Some will be genuine, but not all.

It also depends on the budget you have and what you are looking to buy. If it isn't second hand, but the price is too good to be true, it probably isn't.

We bought from a firm called sofa sofa. We are lucky that they are about 30 mins away, so we could go to the showroom.

So not really anything to do with marketplace?

Its your lookout if you buy anything that you can't see beforehand whatever the place you saw the advert. No one can tell you anything about an unknown retailer
