To think the Queen had strange taste in drinks?

I was watching a documentary about what the royals eat - and it was mentioned that the late Queen's favourite drink was equal measures of Gordon's gin and Dubonnet, with a couple of ice cubes. Well, I thought - I've never had Dubonnet, so why not give it a try? I've never been a fan of gin, but thought that maybe the Dubonnet improved the taste in some way. It did not. The drink is bitter and slightly sour. Does anyone drink this and really like it? I'm surprised that, with access to literally any drink on the planet, the Queen chose this. I certainly shan't be drinking it again!

A gin and Dubonnet is a wonderful thing, but you have to enjoy the bitterness...

ThisSharpShaker · 07/02/2026 19:59

I suppose it's a case of each to their own, we all have different tastes. I don't like dubonnet so won't want be trying it myself. 🤑

ImWearingPantaloons · 07/02/2026 20:06

I actually prepared a gin & dubonnet for her Maj. Back in 1992.

Glasgowmama88 · 07/02/2026 20:16

Suppose they need to tell the masses she drinks something like this, can’t be telling everyone it’s actually adrenochrome eh

godmum56 · 07/02/2026 20:27

I cannot stand gin in any form but I love a dubonnet with ice. I believe she may have inherited the choice from her mother who also enjoyed gin and dubonnet. My other dribk choice that the QM loved is a sweet champagne very cold. Its sold as demi sec of anyone wants to try it.

My Mother loved dubonnet, she was the same age as the The Queen. She used to take it with lemonade and a slice of lemon, we were allowed to suck the lemon after she finished. This was the 70’s and it was very different times.

The advert springs to mind if anyone remembers it, Dubonnet vous?
Also the classic Campari advert, were you truly wafted here from paradise? No Luton airport was the reply.

I am older than that, I remember Fernandel and "Do 'ave a Dubonnet" I believe there is also Dubonnet Blanc.

Yes - the advertising slogan was 'Dubonnet, S'il vous plait' - totally glamorous!
I love a Campari or a Negroni and I think a short strong drink suited Her Majesty!

OrlandointheWilderness · 07/02/2026 21:06

Oh my God. I cannot believe I’ve always thought a Gin and It was short for Gin and Italian tonic!!!

BunfightBetty · 07/02/2026 21:18

I really need to try gin and Dubonnet. Other than wine, Dubonnet and lemonade was my first tipple of choice. I was allowed to drink them at home from the age of about 12, which now I look back was ridiculous, but my parents had an unusually liberal attitude to alcohol. It’s very refreshing and the Dubonnet-soaked lemon slice at the end is chef’s kiss. It’s probably high time it came back into fashion.

Shellyshep · 07/02/2026 22:30

My friend used to work at BP for the Queen & Prince Phillip and I asked him about this drink as I thought it was an odd combo.. that wasn’t her drink at all! I’m not sure but I also heard elsewhere it was the Queen Mothers drink so maybe they mixed the two of them up

I think it’s nice, but I like bitter drinks like gin, Campari, Negronis. Negronis have been super popular in recent times, so the queen was definitely not alone!

What sort of drinks do you like?

my 90 year old mother downs around 3 of these nightly. add tonic water and you will 'create' an extremely acceptable 'tipple' 🕊️

I was for a long time but I’ve found Jordan irritating of late, I can’t believe anyway can be that stupid, it must be intentional.

You have reminded me of two of my favourite adverts, thank you.
Lorraine Chase for Campari and also Joan Collins with Leonard Rossiter for Cinzano.

Martini & Lemonade was my first tipple of choice. Still remember the 70s ads - “Anytime anyplace anywhere, there’s a wonderful drink you can share” when holidaying in the Med was still seen as glamorous and sophisticated!

FWIW: That is a ‘Gin and It’ . ‘Gin and Italian vermouth’ . Very popular with fashionable young ladies in the 1920’s. It is the origin of the term ‘It Girls’.

You obviously don't listen to the podcast, Help I Sexted my Boss. Jordan North and William Hanson. It is their drink of choice throughout the podcast and they get very merry and funny. Their followers are called G and Deavers.

@NavyTurtle

It's G & Divas - which has been mentioned many times on this thread.

Gin and vermouth is basically a Martini cocktail isn’t it?

They had one before lunch

I can confirm this. I once helped out at a banquet for the Queen and she had a gin (Gordon’s) and tonic before lunch, and drank white wine with the meal.

The Duke drank beer (lager).

It's like a martini with red vermouth.
