Usual name change just in case.

Went through a team restructure back in October. My job was taken away. Other people on my level took redundancy but I didn’t as it wasn’t a lot of money as I’d only been there two years. I also need a job and the other people had more options with side hustles, no mortgage etc.

in the restructure I was given a job two levels down from my old role, effectively going from leadership to admin. It’s absolutely crushed my self esteem and confidence. I am now line managed by someone I used to line manage. I did go for a promotion in the restructure and didn’t get it and also went for two other roles which would have been a side step but would have kept me on the same salary. I am now messing about with spread sheets and answering emails and not using any of my qualifications. The process has been absolutely awful and I feel so undervalued. For family reasons I cannot easily get another job as I need certain hours and this job allows me that. Has anyone been in a similar position where you’ve just been demoted and expected to just get on with it?

So the pushed you down by two grades and left your current manager at exactly the same level? That's a bit shit.
Never been in that position, but I think I would be trying to move up as quickly as possible, you have a limited time before everyone forgets you got shafted and used to be a manager. If you can't get a promotion in the next 6 months plan to leave.
If you can try to over perform and help out people higher up the food chain, show off - be that person.

My manager actually got moved up! People are already moving on and forgetting and there is now so much butt licking going on it’s vomit inducing.

How did they justify that?
All in all it sounds miserable you are not unreasonable to be disappointed. Based on your update I think you would be better to move on, perhaps you need to look at how you can adjust the family commitments first?

TinTinsDog · 06/02/2026 08:49

They say that line manager had been doing the role for quite a few months so that’s why he got the role. I’d stepped up into a higher position also but was not regarded as suitable for promotion. I guess face just doesn’t fit.

Oh and the family commitments are pretty fixed for a couple of years sadly. No other support and partner works away a lot.

Been there. Thankfully I was planning to start my own business and so just waited out for the next restructure.

So that's my question, does the company often have restructures...we used to have them every 2 years or so. Can you wait it out and look to move sideways then up?

Are you sure there are no other jobs like yours out there.

Wholelottawoman · 06/02/2026 09:28

I’m sorry you’re in this position, restructures can be so damaging but you’re expected to suck it up and carry on. What would you have done if you’d been made redundant? If leaving isn’t an option all you can do is try to gain more qualifications while you’re there, take any free learning they offer. Update and circulate your CV and job search in between emails & spreadsheets. Something better will be out there for you, it just doesn’t feel like it right now. I wish you the very best of luck x

Yes been there. Demoted due to restructure. Fell pregnant, after mat leave applied for a different internal role that fitted hours with baby. Worked this role for 4 years and got an even bigger promotion than before. Now in a good solid position and it worked out better in the long run.

TheRealMagic · 06/02/2026 10:07

Was your salary cut in the demotion? I think that would make a difference to how willing I'd be to suck up the undeniably shitty position you've been put in.

TinTinsDog · 06/02/2026 10:14

Salary drop of 18k

Ok, then I think you need to start applying for other jobs now. I know you'll have a narrower pool of possibilities due to the hours you need, location restrictions etc - but that means you need to apply for all that you can. Right now you can still apply for jobs using your former title and salary as the relevant reference point. That won't last much longer.

TinTinsDog · 06/02/2026 15:25

My confidence is so low and I just feel like crying. Everyone else managed to keep their job, apart from about four who took redundancy.
