When you walk past people and think ooo their clothes smell lovely… I want that! How do I do this please? I’m wanting fresh lovely smelling clothes. They’re clean and fresh now but I feel they don’t have a lasting softener smell to them.

Well it hasn’t stopped raining here in Ireland since October. No point hanging anything out! Can’t wait to though.

I like Ariel liquid and blue skies comfort.

I know it’s not very MN of me, but I love clothes to smell of fabric conditioner or unstoppables. I add zoflora to washes if I can’t use conditioner, ie towels. Even (or especially) the dog towels and bedding get a glug of zoflora.

I’m sure at some point washing powder/liquid never existed but here we are, using it daily 😂

Washing powder actually has a purpose 😂 and people have been washing their clothes in stuff for millennia!

We once looked after a dog whose bedding reeked to high heaven of some laundry chemicals - stank out our house and I felt so sorry for the dog with its super sensitive nose!!

What's wrong with "smelled"?

Well, Stone Age man used soapwort, then man discovered soap by using fat and ash. Modern detergents are only the same things but brought up to date so, you are right there was a time when they didn’t exist but it was a long time ago 😊

Fake scents could mask that the detergent isn’t doing its job properly.

My friend has the loveliest smelling laundry. She use the fairy block of powder type tabs and blue lenor.

I would also suggest that drying clothes quickly and thoroughly help. The longer they take to fully dry the more likely they are tonhave the musty smell.

And a clean washing machine. I run a cleaner through my machine every month on the hottest wash (my new machine has a drum cleaning cycle) and leave the door open whenever its not being used.

You need to leave both door and dispenser drawer open.

Unstoppables!

Please don't- those things release lots of microplastic pollution each load and your water treatment plant can't filter them out. You are slowly poisoning everyones drinking water. Water softener/ line drying/ and the antibacterial laundry rinse gives you a lovely smelling wash without the pollution.

Yes sorry, bit hyperbolic 😂 but blimey, it was a powerful, powerful smell! Nuclear strength. Filled our whole house and gave us headaches just from a dog bed and towels. It wasn’t a mild whiff 😂

I also hate strong fabric conditioner. I use white vinegar as fabric conditioner as it conditions the fabric without leaving artificial smells.

What is the point of wearing perfume if it is competing with fabric conditioner scent overload?

How much vinegar and where?

TheGoddessAthena · 06/02/2026 09:15

We once stayed in a holiday let where the owner had gone completely OTT with some sort of fabric conditioner or scent boosters on the bedding. It was so noticeable and so unpleasant.

I use lenor and love the fresh smell.

Fabric softener works by depositing a, waxy layer on fabrics that stinks to high heaven of cheap air freshener.

It will clog the fibres too.

Dont start using softener.

PandorasSockBox · 06/02/2026 09:19

Quite honestly, I do not want to smell anything and certainly not other people's clothing.
Quite happy to catch a whiff ofnice scent or aftershave, but other than that I would prefer my nose to remain unassaulted.

I use Daz laundry powder and fairy scent boosters (no fabric softener) - beautiful fresh laundry smell
Also dry outside whenever I can

We’ve done similar, but the holiday let also had plug in scents as well. I’m sensitive to smell and it made me feel sick. We removed all the plug ins (put them in a bathroom cupboard, replaced when we left). Seems it was to cover the smell of damp, but I’d prefer that over all the artificial smell!

In the fabric conditioner compartment of your machine. Better for your fabrics, and descales your machine at the same time

OvernightBloats · 06/02/2026 09:28

It's really hard to get the right dosage especially now that most formulas are concentrated now. I have even had to do a rewash because the washing came out smelling too strong. A little fragrance is fine to me but strong ones are too much!

If you have a job which is in confined spaces, there have been times when the whole room is filled with the sickly smell of really overpowering smelling detergent. It is not pleasant at all. Not everyone will share the love for strong smelling clothes.

peanutbuttertoasty · 06/02/2026 09:28

Don’t bother, it’s pure poison in all those synthetic fragrances. Seriously damaging to health.
kit and kin do two with natural fragrance, worth looking at

19lottie82 · 06/02/2026 09:30

I faffed about with different liquids, conditioners ans scent beads for years. Now I just use persil green (bio) powder, it’s the best!

wishingonastar101 · 06/02/2026 09:32

I hate over scented laundry. Always a really fake, cheap smell. Hate standing on a bus next to someone who stinks of fabric softener! Not a clean smell at all.

I would rather my laundry smell of nothing and put a spray of perfume on... how nice is it when you put a scarf or cardigan on and it has a very light whiff of perfume on!

TwoTuesday · 06/02/2026 09:36

The Costco own brand fabric conditioner is a nice light smell, and not perfume-clashing.

twilightcafe · 06/02/2026 09:38

Comfort Pure Heaven Scent fabric conditioner.

TricNorthCarolina · 06/02/2026 09:41

Im very particular about smells & washing powder as there are many that I really dont like!

I use fairy powder (powder is better for your machine & makes the clothes smell nicer), along with fairy softener and the fairy scent booster beads. Clothes always smell fresh and clean and its not too over powering.

Parsleyforme · 06/02/2026 09:44

I’ve seen a couple of friends do their laundry, they use powder and softener but don’t measure so it looks like a huge amount compared to what the pack says. Their clothes always smell great, but I don’t think it’s good for the fabric, washing machine, water ways or our skin.
I’ve seen those newish XL pods and I assume they’re made for large machines but I bet people put them in normal machines to get more smell. I’d love my clothes to smell really clean but surely it costs a bomb to buy all the powder, new clothes when they become full of conditioner and new machines when they get clogged 🤔

ChequerToRed · 06/02/2026 09:51

In Japanese culture there is a concept called sumehara- scent harrassment.
Doesn't matter what the scent is, be it perfume, BO, last nights grilled mackerel, or yes, fabric conditioner, it’s considered quite rude if people can smell you.
I approve of this wholeheartedly.
