Shamelessly posting for traffic - does anyone know when the council tax rates for 2026-27 will be published?

I think it will be council dependent. Ours have put forward an amount which was agreed but won't be confirmed till end of month because it has to go to final sign off meeting. Have you tried googling your council?

It's unlikely you will receive a bill before March

There is usually a full council meeting towards end of February to agree the amount for the new financial year. The bills are then posted out from beginning of March.

Ours are just formally agreeing the increases, including PCC element, then it will be put together and published towards end Feb/Early March.

It's likely to be 4.99% more than it is this year as that's the biggest increase they can make without some inconvenience I can't remember.

TalulahJP · 05/02/2026 16:39

im going on the premise of 10% rise as it won’t be any more than that so if it’s less it’s a bonus!

Goodadvice1980 · 05/02/2026 21:15

Normally mid-March.

I'm sure my council will go for the max again. They seem to be determined to maintain their place in the top 5 of the most expensive council areas to live in. A few years ago we paid the highest council tax in England and Wales, but they slipped to 4 in the charts last year.

It's one of the reasons I'm in favour of abolishing the two-tier system where you have both county and district/borough councils. There's so much duplication when you have 2 councils to pay for that I'm positive it can't be any more expensive. (Mind you, I think we'll still have the bloody stupid town and parish councils, fuck knows how they manage to spend so much money.)
