To ask how to lose half a stone in one month for op?

ScullyD · 04/02/2026 16:49

I’ve already lost 2 stone with mounjaro and have been informed I need to lose a further half stone in a month to get my laparoscopy op done. I went off mounjaro 2 months ago and haven’t regained.

currently I weight train twice a week for 30 mins and speed walk 3-4 times a week on treadmill. I eat fine but could be better.

i really want to do this but it seems challenging, can someone help with how i can achieve this in terms of diet and exercise?

I think what I'm stressed about is presumably I will not have the energy to weight train and workout if I'm only having protein shakes?

So does this just mean I should focus on the diet and kind of forget the weight training for a month (but keep walking)?

ReturnOfTheToad · 05/02/2026 11:40

I wouldn't worry too much about excercise.unless you are doing a lot it will make a minimal difference but may raise your hunger levels.

If I really needed to lose half a stone for an op I wouldn't worry too much about doing it 'the healthy way' and just concentrate on getting it done. It's only 4 weeks, it might not be pleasant but I would go with a very low calorie intake, like 800/1000 a day and monitor my weight loss. There is every chance that in the first week you'll have a big whoosh of weight loss and only be left with a few pounds to shift for the rest of the month. Sometimes drastic times call for drastic measures but I think it is very doable.

After your op you can reassess your goals and if you decide you want to lose further weight you can do it in a more healthy, sustainable way.

ASometimeThing · 05/02/2026 11:43

That should be easily doable. Don’t eat breakfast, limit carbs and up your protein. No snacking whatsoever. Track your calories on MFP.

I wouldn’t worry about upping exercise.

I know this sounds a bit mad, but I'd drop the weights and walking as when you get on those scales, they will only look at the number. They won't care whether that weight is made up of muscle or fat. Its that number that they'll go by.

Plus do the slim fast, calorie count or any of the other good advice from PPs.

Cakeandcardio · 05/02/2026 11:58

Slimming world. I don't agree with the way it is marketed with 'syns' but the idea is really clean eating with few treats. It worked for me - lost 4lbs in the first week.

Lugga · 05/02/2026 12:00

Others may disagree but yes, with the sole objective of reducing body weight in the short term I would target low calories at the expense of exercise. I would even cut back on the walking unless are are managing it easily. You are not going to undo all of your hard work on the exercise front in a month and bluntly muscle loss is as good as fat loss for the objective you are trying to reach.

I am a person who gets very hungry after exercise though, so for me exercise increases the risk of bingeing. If you are not like this ignore.

tamade · 05/02/2026 13:56

A few people on here suggesting you drop the weights and the walking. TBH a couple of half hour weights sessions are neither here nor there but I advocate strongly for the walking, it doesn’t burn loads of calories but it does help regulate blood sugar and can promote fat burning as a result

and because I forgot to say in my first post:
good luck 🍀

splendidpickle · 05/02/2026 14:54

It’s definitely possible to lose weight quickly, it’s just not pleasant!
Given you know it’s only short term and you have already done so well I would have thought you have a high chance of success.
Some of the suggestions here don’t seem to be that healthy… I would have thought you would be best doing something structured and proven like the fast 800. There’s suggestions for how to maximise the nutrition from the 800 calories.

If you drop the weight training and walking you’ll also slow your metabolism which seems like a bad idea.

Go to the sauna just before your weigh-in - you will sweat off some water weight.

PrismRain · 05/02/2026 15:40

Go very low carb. As in less than 50g of carbs a day. Eliminate all bread, pasta, potatoes, root vegetables, sugar, junk, rice. Get your carbs only from vegetables like green beans, broccoli, spinach, cauliflower etc….all the ones lowest in carbs. Eat lean protein like chicken and fish, and healthy fats like nuts, olive oil….use single cream in coffee instead of milk. Weigh and measure everything and eat between 800 and 1200 calories a day for the month. It’s the blood sugar diet basically. Google it. I lost 3 stone doing that for 12 weeks then moving to more of a maintenance version. Continuing to lose but more slowly now. Just over 4 stone gone now. It’s hard but doable if you choose the right foods. Even at 800 calories I didn’t feel hungry because I was having enough healthy fats.

1lb weight loss is a calorie deficit of 3500 calories. So I guess use an online TDEE or macro calculator and set your deficit to achieve those goals.

Bboy1234 · 05/02/2026 17:10

I had to do a liver reduction diet for two weeks before my gallbladder operation. I chose to just follow the milk diet (literally just milk and water with a multivitamin so not particularly healthy ) and lost a stone in two weeks

LionKing88 · 05/02/2026 17:12

Look up New You Diet. Meal replacements - its 800kcal a day and its fucking hard work - but you'll loose 7lbs in 10 days never mind 1 month.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 05/02/2026 17:40

I lost 1.5 stone in 5 weeks (with anxiety) Basically stopped eating.

Only fruit, full cream milk and the very odd meal / piece of cheese.

marshmallowwhip · 05/02/2026 18:19

Stupid question but have they weighed you? They told me they wouldn’t do mine as my BMI was over 40
turns out the consultant had just looked at me Confused
it was actually 36 and I got my operation!

The Harcombe diet is brutal but works. Week 1 all you have is unlimited protein (eggs, meat, fish, tofu), natural full fat Greek yoghurt, butter/oil and unlimited vegetables (not potatoes). A tiny bit of oats/wholemeal rice if needed and that’s it. No fruit or milk. You climb the wall with no sugar at day 2 or 3 but you can lose the weight in a week. Most of it is probably water weight but it’s just ultra clean eating. If you’re going to cheat on it, I’d have a banana bug after a week you can have berries and v dark chocolate. I might even try it again myself!
