To have reached 45 without knowing how to do make up

Aibusadandhormonal · 04/02/2026 12:00

And what can I do about it?

I'd quite like to look a bit more put together. Working from home for past 10 years and 2 kids means I've been only one step away from doing the school run in my pj's... I'd like to be more put together and I've made a start with clothing being a bit smarter but I think what would help me feel a bit more professional (looking for a new job and just wanting to grab a bit more of life).

But my make up ideas are either some BB cream slapped on or on a night out the same plus mascara...

How can I learn 1) what to use for a minimalist look but smart and 2) how ro apply it!

No idea but following

DappledThings · 04/02/2026 12:04

No, YANBU to have got to 45 without knowing. I'm 46 and never learnt either but still have no interest. I don't think it's that unusual.

EmmaOvary · 04/02/2026 12:04

I’m the same, OP. Could you go to a makeup counter and get them to do a demo? I appreciate they will try to flog you the products but I guess if you’re happy with the results…?

Undercovers · 04/02/2026 12:05

Me too. Been doing the same thing since I was 15 and probably shows! No idea where to start with my changing peri skin. I want to look natural so don't trust the beauty counter ladies!

ilparadodosdoltos · 04/02/2026 12:06

Lots of woman on instagram that put on make up in front of the camera. ‘Isthistooyoungforme’ (I think is her name) and Scotsstyleeditor. YouTube as well I’m sure.

ilparadodosdoltos · 04/02/2026 12:07

Sali Hughes is another one.

purplecorkheart · 04/02/2026 12:08

I don't really know either but can now do the basics. I went to a local salon and asked if they did make up lessons. They did not advertise it but were more than happy to do so. I learned how to do a basic look that would work for work and then how to change it up a bit for the evening.

Since then I am watching some videos on youtube/social media but lesson was the best thing for me.

I agree with all this!

angelcake20 · 04/02/2026 12:10

53 here, only where make-up to go “out out”, still doing the same as I did at 23. My Facebook profile picture looks quite put together - I was going to a fancy dress party and had gone what I thought was over the top!

dampmuddyandcold · 04/02/2026 12:12

Realistically, are you going to spend a lot of time on makeup?

I never have. So if you aren’t interested demos and the like are going to be OTT. For my part, I look better with a bit of foundation / concealer and even better with mascara. But I’m not bothering with lipgloss or eyeshadow or anything like that. One thing that I think has made a big difference (I’m 45) is a really good moisturiser and primer. I’ve always just used Nivea and it’s nice but I think my skin definitely needed some extra help as I got older.

5foot5 · 04/02/2026 12:15

Well I am 63 and still a bit clueless frankly.

Until I started work in the mid-80s I never bothered much. As a student my friends and I were not really in to lots of make up, perhaps a bit now and then for a night out.

When I started work I thought it might be the "grown up" thing to do so I would put on foundation, eye shadow and lipstick every morning, though probably not with any great expertise. After a few months I stopped because it became apparent that most of the women in technical roles didn't bother and the only female staff who were elaborately made up were the ones in admin or secretarial roles.

For a few years I had a limited selection that I might use for a special occasion. These days I think I have a lipstick somewhere that adult DD gave me. She is pretty good at make up when she wants to be but I don't think she wears it every day. No idea how she learned, from friends probably

That's my fear of make up counter - although probably heavily influenced by the last time I went to a make up counter for advice when I was a teenager and came away looking caked on.

I don't have a clue even how to apply foundation. Or even if foundation is the right thing. And I havent a clue where to start with YouTubers... sounds like a lot of trial and error to find someone who works for what I want. Unless anyone has recommendations.

I guess a salon is a good idea.

I’m going to a workshop this weekend for mature (over 50s) makeup techniques.

Im pretty confident with applying makeup but I’m happy to pick up some tips for a fresher more current look. Skin prep, contouring, applying some mini lash strips.

They provide products which I’m looking forward to trying but encourage you to bring your own favourites.

I’ll report back.

Manymoresometimes · 04/02/2026 12:23

Are you happy with how you look? Or feel pressure to wear make-up?

I do my eyebrows and wear mascara, bit of powder and blusher and love bronzer in the summer.

I fell "victim" to SM the other week and make-up for "mature skin" bought the whole starter kit and i hated it! The feel of foundation was awful! And why do so many women wear eyeshadow on a daily basis....

babyproblems · 04/02/2026 12:23

Go to a MAC counter and book a lesson. They’re excellent x

dampmuddyandcold · 04/02/2026 12:24

Whats there to know about putting on foundation?

Mama2many73 · 04/02/2026 12:27

Following too!
I rarely wear any make up, just moisturiser and as OP occasionally mascarar. Im in a large public event soon and will need to have something on, even just a natural look and im having a bit of a panic, to be honest clothes AND make up!

Whats there to know about putting on foundation?

What type, what colour would be my first 2 questions . Ive not worn foundation for well over 15yrs.

Parker231 · 04/02/2026 12:29

Easier not to bother - I’m mid 50’s and rarely wear any makeup. Most people don’t apply makeup well and it doesn’t look great

MyBestThing · 04/02/2026 12:29

I never bothered with make-up when I was young apart from some eyeliner on a night out. In my 40s when it might have made a difference I didn't care. I still don't bother at 67 but when I was 61 I learned how to do it.
I had breast cancer and there was a free half day course by a beautician for women with cancer called "Look good feel good".
It was really interesting to learn how to use all kinds of stuff I had no idea about. When you lose your hair with chemo the eyebrows fall out as well and she spent ages showing everyone how to draw on eyebrows "sisters not twins" was the mantra.
I still don't wear makeup as I can't stand the feel of it on my face, it just feels dirty, but I can do a mean eyebrow!

So OP, I recommend a professional lesson if you want to learn.

Obeseandashamed · 04/02/2026 12:31

YANBU. Make up wasn’t part of my teenage years so I am still terrible with it 20 years later. Tinted moisturiser and mascara are about as far as I go.

TheHoneyPot · 04/02/2026 12:37

Personally, at 45 I wouldn’t bother with foundation. I would ensure your skin is well hydrated with a good moisturiser (also if you don’t have a skincare routine, it’s time to start as make up will look awful if your skin isn’t as good as it can be. Invest in a Vit C serum, Glycolic Acid as a minimum, The Ordinary are cheap and give good results) and just use concealer or a tinted moisturiser on any blemishes and under your eyes and then I’d pop a bit of bronzer and blush on your cheeks, a slick of mascara and you’re good to go. The above is a great, low maintenance day time look that doesn’t require any skill and is low key for the day.

If you’re going out in the evening I would suggest adding some eyeshadow/ liner and lip stick (the wonder skin lip stains are amazing) and bob’s your uncle!

I was coming to say this too!! MAC are generally very good. Bobbi Brown also.

Be clear about what you like and dislike if you can - as in - light eyes and heavy lips, or you don’t like lipstick, or whatever. There’s no point in coming away with red lipstick and pale eyeshadows if they’re not your thing.

I also like the urban decay eyeshadow palettes - if any of those take your fancy search it on YouTube and just watch some tutorials

TheLovingReader · 04/02/2026 12:41

I can't do it either. Specifically, I can't do I make up.I never could. I look as if i've drawn eyeliner on like a three year old with a crayon.
