I bought a used car on the 6th December. Just under £4k. It broke down on the way home. The man came and recovered it back to the garage. Had to pay £50 to get a taxi to get home.
Eventually I got a call to say it was ready and as a courtesy, they would deliver it to my home (about a 35 minute drive away). All good.

Started using the car for work, life, the usual.

Was taking daughter to college on a morning when it was snowing, and the windscreen wipers stopped working!!

Managed to limp home, and called the dealer to tell him. He said bring it over. So I had to cancel a day of work in order to do this. As I set off, the car just drifted to a halt. On a roundabout. Bloody nightmare! I called the man again who arranged for it to be recovered. 3.5 hours later (bearing in mind it's bloody freezing) the recovery truck arrived. He really struggled to get it on the truck as it was stuck in Park. Lovely recovery man drops me home.

Don't hear a thing for three/four weeks. Now the car is ready for me to collect. During this time, I have had to hire a car to the tune of £250, I've lost several days work, which has cost around £500, I've been extremely inconvenienced and VERY stressed by the whole thing.

Would I be unreasonable to ask for some sort of financial recompense and would I have a legal leg to stand on in doing so?

Thanks

I am not 100% on the legal side of it all but I believe you won’t have a leg to stand on if the car was “sold as seen”.

If you had warranty or a cooling off period that would be different.

When you sell a car you should be telling the buyer everything that is “wrong” with the car, but some people don’t and tbh the police / dvla hardly do much about this.

You also got the car 3 months ago so I think you’re stumped.

Youll have to look at the terms you got the car on, you can always ask the dealer to take the car back or for financial discount but he might say no

The consumer sales act of 2015 removed the dealers right of "sold as seen" the last legal remnants of the historic legal position of "caveat emptor" or buyer beware. Google the act as it applies to second hand cars and you will see you have a lot of protection still as it's within the first 6 months.

However, you have little chance of getting compensation for the money you have to spend... but I would potentially be asking for a full refund as the car doesn't seem fit for purpose

I am sorry but car under 4k. I would expect nothing less.

Didn't hear for weeks, did you not call? Dh had kssue with used car and with the latrge dealership it's simply "tough luck".

They repaired the car, umless you were promised courtesy car, you won't get anything.

Yes, reject the car as it’s not fit for purpose.

From Google AI

When buying a used car from a dealer in the UK, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 mandates the car must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. You have a 30-day right to reject for a full refund if a fault is found. Between 30 days and 6 months, you are entitled to a repair or replacement.

Rights When Buying from a Dealer (Trader)

  • Within 30 Days: You have the right to reject the vehicle for a full refund if a fault is discovered that was present at the time of sale. If you prefer, the dealer can repair or replace it.
30 Days to 6 Months: If a fault appears, it is legally assumed to have been present at the time of delivery. You are entitled to a repair or replacement. If this fails, you may be entitled to a refund, though a reduction for usage can be applied.

Right. Thanks. It had a 3 month warranty. Which runs out in two days, I guess. In response to PP, I did call initially a couple of times and he told me that he would be in touch when it was ready!

Tbh, I only want the car hire money.

If the car was bought on 6th December with a 3 month warranty then surely you’re covered until 6th March?
I would imagine it would be part of the terms of the warranty agreement if you were entitled to compensation in lieu of car hire costs.

Rubbish. Our dds car was under £4k & we expected it to do what it's supposed to do

Littlestmoo · 04/02/2026 08:21

Just to add I would definitely be asking to have the warranty extended at no extra cost to cover the time the car has been in the garage for repair. If it’s not been useable for the last month then I would ask for the warranty to be extended to April.

Oh yeah! D'oh! I called this morning and tried to get some kind or refund, but yes, they've agreed to extend the warranty. Which is a bit of a win, I guess.
