To be annoyed with GP ?

inkyspells · 02/02/2026 18:07

My GP now offers a e consult form when you want an appointment or any help.
Since last Wednesday I’ve had UTI symptoms.
Constantly feeling like a need to urinate ,burning and a sore back.
Ive tried to treat it myself with cranberry juice /water /sachets from Amazon.
Nothing is helping so I completed a e consult form.
Any other time the GP has sent a prescription to my local pharmacy.
Today they sent a text saying sounds like you have a uti and need antibiotics ,find a pharmacy through pharmacy first and go and see them and they will prescribe them.
The issue is I have 2 pharmacy’s that open 9-5 pm which are around 15/20 min drive
I have recently started a new job and I work 9-5 and I have a 20 min break,we are in 6 weeks training and there’s no chance I can get out to go to pharmacy.
My partner was going to collect for me.
I rang GP and explained and receptionist said no you need pharmacy first rather than a GP
aibu to be annoyed ?
The GP has said I need antibiotics but won’t prescribe them.
Im a bit upset tonight,I thought I would of had antibiotics by now and at least kicking in.
The only day I can go is Saturday when I’m off.

Where can you buy them online? At Christmas I had to have a private online consultation for tonsillitis and it wasn’t cheap. I can’t see anywhere in the UK to simply order them, it would be handy to have a pack in the house in case it fares again.

Our ASDA pharmacy takes a swab and issues antibiotics for tonsillitis.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 02/02/2026 23:42

Here's an example, but there are countless places to buy ABs online.

Try calling 111, I had to do that in the early hours of the morning when I had a uti, they prescribed antibiotics to collect in the morning from my local pharmacy. You can also use boots or asda pharmacy online and fill out a form and they can prescribe a short course and you pick up in your local store. The last time I did that though they only prescribed 3 days worth, hence having to call 111 in the middle of the night crying when my antibiotics finished and my symptoms was still bad.

YourRedLurker · 02/02/2026 23:50

Does feel a bit like going backwards ending up with more unnecessary antibiotics use (not the op but in general). The post above is a good example

Extract from NICE guidance on treatment of acute sinusitis in a systemically well patient (which would be the huge majority).

  • "Do not offer an antibiotic prescription.
  • Advise the person:
  • On the usual cause and course of acute sinusitis.
  • Acute sinusitis is usually caused by a virus, resolves within 12 weeks, and most people get better without antibiotics.
  • Bacterial sinusitis is usually self-limiting and does not routinely need antibiotics."

So it's not often you prescribe antibiotics in primary care for this, yet if people can just buy them online then going to go back to overuse.

Can’t your DH go to the pharmacy instead of the GP?

3 days is the standard course for women with lower UTI symptoms so you'd have likely had that from the GP as well.

Men or pregnant women get 7 days as standard.

Phone 111 ooh they'll get a gp to speak to you and send a script to a pharmacy. You can also get antibiotics online from boots/superdrug etc. Do you take D-Mannose? Massively reduced UTIs for me. Also ask GP if you can have a set of antibiotics if you get them frequently so that you can take them as soon as symptoms start.

Yes, I have ordered them online myself a couple of times. They are more expensive than an NHS prescription, but very convenient!

@Octavia64really ? Because I’ve had 2 in the last 12 months ..my last was July time last year

That’s what my local one said.

i had to go to the gp,

now I’m taking d mannose and a daily cranberry drink: don’t want any more

inkyspells · 03/02/2026 08:24

Just been to another chemist that opens at 8 a bit further out but they said that I have “re occurring uti “ so I need to see my Gp for evaluation
Asked could I not just got some antibiotics from them and they said no
So now I’m waiting till 8.30 when my GP opens to fill in another e consult

GP has prescribed me amoxicillin
I thought it would be trimethoprim
Anyone had amoxicillin for uti ?

nutbrownhare15 · 03/02/2026 09:39

Utis can be really serious if untreated. I would be saying to work you have to attend a pharmacy for an urgent medical issue. I don't really see how they can argue with that. Don't leave it til Saturday.

Coventgardengirl · 02/02/2026 18:52

If you go to A and E they will prescribe there you could go tonight

It's neither an accident nor an emergency.

Yes, of course.
They tend to try different ones if you have a lot of infections.

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum AB.

Can’t your DH go to the pharmacy instead of the GP?

That wouldn't have been helpful as the pharmacy would want to see and evaluate the actual patient.

GoAwayNaughtyPigeon · 03/02/2026 10:05

111 can prescribe you antibiotics if indicated for uncomplicated illnesses like simple UTIs. They have done it multiple times for me in the past when I've had mastitis (apparently my only superpower in life is producing far too much breastmilk and subsequently giving myself mastitis multiple times a year woo 🙄)

Fodencat · 03/02/2026 10:17

Whether the GP sends a prescription directly or not you’ve still got to get to a pharmacy. Your health is more important than work. UTIs are horrendous.

Ideally Nitrofurantoin modified release or trimethoprim

GinaandGin · 03/02/2026 11:07

Pharmacy first scheme where I am (northern ireland) will not issue abx if there is blood in urine or if individual has had s certain number of uti s in the past 6 months. Or If individual is immunocompromised

Op needs to be assessed in person by pharmacist
Confidentiality issues
Consent issues means DH can't go on OP s behalf

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 02/02/2026 21:27

OP you can buy antibiotics from all the online pharmacies now.

Just buy some and keep them handy for another time. I know that doesn't help with your current problem though.

Please dont buy antibiotics and keep them "just incase ". This is how infections become resistant with overuse of antibiotics. This is going to cause issues in health care in the future. You need to see a pharmacist or GP either face to face or online who will prescribe the right kind and dose

And as for @Coventgardengirl who suggested A&E for someone who is at work and doesn't want to miss training to see a pharmacist thats absolutely ridiculous and no wonder people with genuine emergencies have to wait hours

Edinburghdaze · 03/02/2026 11:31

Coventgardengirl · 02/02/2026 18:52

If you go to A and E they will prescribe there you could go tonight

This is why A&E can’t cope. Take time off work and go to a pharmacy. Don’t use up more of the NHS’s time.

ittakes2 · 03/02/2026 11:35

just look on the NHS website for a late nigh pharmacy - places like asada pharm are often open late

Imdunfer · 03/02/2026 11:51

inkyspells · 02/02/2026 18:20

I don’t understand why the GP can’t send a prescription rather than having to go to a chemist and have to discuss everything there.

You are being incredibly unreasonable. You have to go to the chemist anyway to pick up the prescription. All you have to do is go a few minutes earlier.

Is there no supermarket chemist near you, they have much longer hours, ime.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 03/02/2026 11:52

Please don't buy antibiotics and keep them "just in case"

I meant that they'd be handy if someone faced this situation in the future. In other words, if the GP didn't prescribe them (even though they were indicated) and had suggested getting them from a pharmacist, but this was difficult on a practical level, or it was a Saturday evening, for example.

I didn't mean that everyone should just take ABs for every infection they ever encountered.
