To not be sure if I want to move?

We have seen a beautiful house up for sale about 10 miles away from us. It’s a lot more spacious than our home (which we have been in 8 years and had another DC in that time) and although it needs new carpets and redecorating as it’s currently all white, it’s a lovely house at a decent price.

The location isn’t ideal though, we are rural to a point at the moment but we are straight on to a main A road that goes to Leeds, where as this is just on a back B road and it’s notorious for being difficult in bad weather. It also has no shops or anything, where as we are walking distance from a (brilliant) GP surgery, a couple of shops which we use most days, a park and a clubhouse.

i can see why DH has his heart set on it, I really do. But I just don’t know. I also don’t know if I am in the right space for the upheaval of moving at the moment. But I worry if it’s me who says no to it that he will resent me a bit for it.

Keep looking. It’s affordable for a reason.

Have you sold your house ? You’d need to have it at least listed before you would be classed as proceedable - I’d stay where you are as unlikely to be a good option as a forever home , what happens when you no longer drive or weather means you can’t easily get to the shop

Are you currently on a bus route? If so def don't move as it will give your children more independence.
What does transport to school look like for each location? Incl secondaries even if it might seem a long way away?
I would hate to have to drive mine twice a day every day but I know lots of people do.
Personally I would absolutely hate being so rural I couldn't walk to at least one shop but again I know plenty of people who do live happily like that.

I think that, particularly when you have children, the park, shops etc are really important. You’ll be giving up your convenience and the kids will need driving everywhere. Maybe the compromise is to keep an eye out for somewhere new which still has local facilities?

Brewtiful · 02/02/2026 15:54

Honestly I can't see why he is so keen. Practically speaking where you are now seems to have so many more benefits than the new location it's not even a close competition. Having a bit more room seems a very small positive when you'd be losing so much.

GetKettleOnLass · 02/02/2026 15:54

We are currently on a bus route (A64), this I think does have busses but I’m not 100%. We currently have to drive our son to primary school and the new house is a slightly shorter drive to his school than where we are now. For secondary I think there’s a bus from the village so school isn’t so much of an issue. It’s just everything else! I grew up in a village that was the same just 2 pubs and nothing else, but I obviously love that village as I grew up there and my parents are still there where as this village has literally nothing.

Location, location, location. A house can always be improved, but a location never can be (not within twenty years and with government money, anyway).

I would not move away from having facilities on my doorstep, to having to get into the car for the smallest thing.

GetKettleOnLass · 04/02/2026 15:52

I can see why as the house is an upgrade - this is our living room and kitchen vs the house we’re thinking about. DH really has his hopes up but I just don’t know.

I prefer the one in Old Malton Road, Saxton... Although know nothing about the area!!! That house does look lovely, but it's very open plan.

Agree with pp that it's all about location location location x

RedBlueGreenStars24 · 04/02/2026 16:19

As your kids get older, location becomes incredibly important. If you go somewhere rural with nothing around and no frequent buses, you will be a daily taxi service for your kids, multiple times a day.
