To have expected the coil to make things better so soon?

TMI perhaps for the AIBU board but I got the Mirena coil fitted three weeks ago (to hopefully ease my heavy, painful periods) - I experienced spotting every single day since and on Friday started my period and it’s really heavy and painful!!! 😣 How long did it take for those of you on the coil to see any difference?? Was I being wildly unrealistic to expect to see a difference this soon, for my first period since getting it fitted??

They told me it could take several months to settle down and it did for me - I was spotting a lot more than usual for a few months. But then it all stopped, I have the lightest ever “just a liner for a couple of days” periods now. Been fine for years now.

5 or 6 months. Think there was bleeding every day for a while and thought I'd made a mistake. Now it's great

HRTQueen · 02/02/2026 14:17

try not to worry it can take a few months. I had a light bleed daily for a few months and for about two-three months still had a heavy period. They got lighter over time

Just I do not know where I am in regard to menopause, I still ovulate every few months and still have pmt symptoms adn cramps/backache (not as bad) but thankfully not the heavy bleeds

It didn't work for me with regards to heavy periods. The GP was so convinced that it was "the gold stamdard", that they've put one in 3 times, and each time it expelled itself within 8 months. I've also had an endometrial ablation, but that was also unsuccessful. It seems my body is determined to make me look like a walking crime scene until menopause.

I have since been diagnosed with adenomyosis and fibroids.

Ah sorry to hear this - yeah, it seems it doesn’t work for everyone and might not be the holy grail for heavy periods that the doctor and others seem to think it’ll be!! From what the other posts have said, I’ll give it time and see how I get on.

Thanks very much @Talipesmum @CuppaTandBicky @HRTQueen - I’ll try to remain patient and see how I get on in the next few months! 🙏🏼

It sorted out my heavy periods (I have an adenomyosis diagnosis) but it took a few weeks. You were being optimistic not unrealistic! Hope it works out for you

Abd80 · 02/02/2026 17:24

can take 4-6 months to settle.

TheSoapyFrog · 05/02/2026 09:35

I have my fingers crossed for you OP. It seems to have a good success rate and what happened to me was a rarity.

Bonjovispjs · 05/02/2026 10:00

I had light bleeding for 8 weeks afterwards. Then no periods at all after 😊 So, i went from horrendously heavy periods that would last for 3 weeks and be so heavy I was flooding and passing huge clots, to absolutely nothing, it was a godsend. I'm on my second one now. Hopefully you'll have the same result.

I also had mine for heavy periods which got to 3 weeks on 1 week off eventually. The Mirena wasn’t an instant fix, things tapered off gradually, it probably took coming up to a year to stop completely. It was however the best thing I ever did, I think I had 3-4 over the years. And as a bonus I went through the menopause without even realising as I wasn’t having any periods. A blood test did show when I was peri, then another one showed it was finished, otherwise I had absolutely no idea which was great!
I think it definitely worth persevering, just one month isn’t enough.

UnaOfStormhold · 05/02/2026 10:07

As I understand it (not a medic!) heavy periods are often due to building up a really thick uterine lining so there's a lot to shed each month. The coil should stop it building up so much and thus make it better in the future, but what's already there still needs to come out.

Thanks @Bonjovispjs @Sahara123 @UnaOfStormhold, really helpful to know and I will remain optimistic (and a little more patient)!! 🤞🏼
