Clean a house to a good standard in just two hours

Seen so many posts about cleaners, with a lot of people talking about two-hour cleans. I’m just wondering what I’m doing incorrectly, because two hours is not enough to clean my house. How can you clean a house to a good standard in just two hours?

OP posts:

I've only heard about the daily clean on mumsnet! Hard to see how there'd possibly be time?

Or that it would be necessary. If you're making sufficient dirt/mess that it's necessary to clean a bathroom more than once a week, wouldn't your efforts be better directed towards not making the mess in the first place?

The OP says 'I wash the tiles, soap dish, and the containers for all the bottles about once a week (when needed). Then, once every few weeks, I unscrew the plugs and clean them. I wipe the toilets every 2-3 days. Then I do a deep clean with a bucket of water and bleach about once every ten days'

So to answer your question OP, if this is an example of the level of cleaning you're doing then there's your answer. You're cleaning too much and too often. You're talking about doing annual 'spring cleaning' jobs like inside the plugs and washing the tiles weekly/every few weeks.

A cleaner spending two hours a week cleaning a house isn't going to that level, nor would they need to.

I used to be able to clean well and fast, now I have to divide areas up and am not fast. Easier for me to mostly clean as I go. I also use a robot hoover.

My DD can do something in a few minutes that will take me well over an hour to do. So it depends on the person, age, health etc.

I agree with the objectivity comment as well, someone coming in to a space has no personal attachment and can see what actions need to be taken and just get on with it.

It does depend on the space though. If it was bigger and more cluttered, I agree it would take longer than 2 hours to clean thoroughly.

They are not cleaning as much as you’d do yourself in that time. Eg they won’t be putting things away, as owner does that beforehand to make sure surfaces are clear for cleaner to clean. They don’t do deep cleans, that’s a separate service. When you clean yourself its totally different. My close friend was my cleaner and she always did it in 2hrs, and it was to a good standard.

Depends how big your house is! And how much stuff you have to clean around. Ours is a 4 double bed semi, two bathrooms, downstairs loo, utliity, big reception rooms and kitchen. It couldn't all be done in two hours! When we've had cleaners it's one person doing four hours or two people doing two hours. When I had a one bed flat I could blitz it in an hour.

Two hours usually only covers a quick tidy—dust, wipe surfaces, vacuum. A really clean house takes longer, especially if things have piled up. Short cleans work best when done regularly.

i used to have cleaners in London but always at least 2 cleaners came so x4 hours of work

Buzyizzy217 · 03/02/2026 06:55

Goodness, she doesn’t do toilets? And you clean every day anyway. So why do you have her?

Onefortheroad25 · 03/02/2026 06:58

Jesus. I need a new cleaner. Mine barely gets the 2 bathrooms done in 2 hours!

Absolutely , every day the bathrooms are cleaned toilets bleached, worktops oven tops sprayed and wiped down and hoover (don’t pull furniture out daily) most of my friends also do this I thought it was normal ??

I've never done this, or known anyone who does. Who's got the time? I'd have to be vacuuming at 9.30pm every night, and that's Sofa Time.

I absolutely don’t and have no desire to. Would never use bleach and I like my family to have an immune system. Nobody needs to clean like that, it’s obsessive. We both work full time. Counter tops and hob wipe down daily. Everything else once a week. Ecover all the way.

My cleaner didn’t do bedrooms and everything was tidy so she would go straight up to the bathroom and spend 20 minutes or so there, down to downstairs loo, into kitchen (not oven or inside microwave as they are extra) sweep wooden floors, clean kitchen then kitchen floor, hall floor, clean bathroom and downstairs loo floors then vacuum all carpets. Twice a year she came for 4 hours and did skirting boards, ovens, window seals etc in addition

gototogo · 03/02/2026 07:43

I try to avoid bleach myself and no longer have a cleaner, my dh does the cleaning as retired. The vacuum cleaner definitely doesn’t come out daily, not even weekly, unless you have a shedding pet why would you need too? The trick with kids is to only only food and messy play at the kitchen table

tedibear · 03/02/2026 08:12

Well if I only cleaned I could probably do a fair amount in 2hrs. I probably spend at least 1-2 hrs just tidying ,putting things away, sorting out clothes and putting them away etc.

A cleaner only cleans. So they can just focus on that. I omahine most folk with a cleaner tidy up the night before they are due.

chunkyBoo · 03/02/2026 08:17

My cleaner does 2.5 hours and cleans kitchen diner lounge room in about 1.5 hours, then the rest of her time, the hallway, main bathroom and snug. If the floor in the bathroom (dreadful tiles that take huge effort to clean properly) is particularly grubby then she’ll miss the snug that week. It generally depends on the place being clear for her to just get on with it

I can't clean my home to a good standard in two hours. I live alone but have twice monthly visits from daughter and five year old grandchild. After they've been it takes me the best part of a day to reset - clean loos, bathroom, change beds, hoover etc. I also work FT and have slight mobility issues due to arthritis, but don't 🤔 I've ever managed everything in my three bedroom home in two hours!

Rainbowdottie · 03/02/2026 14:13

I really think it depends on so many things. Your age, your ability, your motivation, how big your house is, what your expectations are etc, even how tidy you are and how many of you are living there.

I'm now (early) retired and I can’t clean as quick or probably as efficiently as I did years ago. My house is clean, tidy and spotless and I’m very house proud…but I wont clean all day every day, I just dont have the motivation nor the inclination. I give my house the morning and I love to slob in the afternoons. I can clean my house in 2 hours really well but only because I keep on top of it daily (daily wipe of bathrooms and kitchen, constant tidying and putting away, laundry every day etc). But equally I can walk away from a lot of things that other people wouldn’t…ie I won’t clean my tiles every day, I won’t wash out the bins every day , I won’t hoover every day etc

I like to have a monthly reset where I’ll wash the toothbrushes, wash the washing machine, do a deeper defluff of the tumble dryer, wash my make up brushes, clean the drains and bins,Descale the kettle, do the filters. Tbh if I included all those in my weekly cleans and little daily top ups, I’d be here forever.

In my mind housework will never go away. Sure I love my house to look like a showroom. It does actually affect my mood if it’s a mess and I find it quite overwhelming when there’s lots to do, I love a clean, tidy ordered house but in my mind where do you stop? I personally could just go on forever! I think it’s a bit different for cleaners, they have an allocated time and a definite stop…it’s not so easy when it’s your own home..they’ll always be something to do

justasking111 · 03/02/2026 15:43

I pulled out furniture in the bedroom this morning, hoovered behind everything. Then hoovered carpet thor. Cleaner using carpet cleaner on Thursday so didn't want her finding cobwebs.

I get sidetracked tidying drawers that get cluttered. Cleaners don't do that. Those little jobs slow me down.
