Telling someone to pick up their rubbish

HappyApper · 01/02/2026 15:22

I was coming out of my house and a man and a woman were walking along opposite side of road and she just chucked a cigarette packet. I saw red and started saying excuse me you’ve dropped something. They both ignored me but I continued. They both turned round and the man jogged back and picked it up. The woman was ready for a fight I think. Does anyone else challenge behaviour anymore or should I just shut up?! It was the way she just did it with no care. I know there are more important things in the world going on but honestly it really did rage me!

I tell people off for littering if I think it’s safe for me, so probably 50% of the time. I also see red when adults push in lines and call them out on it, I say “excuse me there is a line, don’t push in” and glare at them. My husband and children really cringe but I think it’s important.

WibbleyPie · 01/02/2026 15:39

I think we should challenge this kind of antisocial behaviour, however people are worried to, because so many people who behave that way aren't bothered to get into it with a stranger, either verbally or physically and it can be risky, so I understand why people don't. I just pick stuff up myself, doesn't solve the entitlement of people thinking they can do it, but it gets rid of it and also doesn't risk me getting a punch on the nose.
Don't know what the right answer is really.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 01/02/2026 15:41

I can’t stand people who litter.
I say people but actually they are scum.

BertieWoostersChaps · 01/02/2026 15:42

Yes I challenge this sort of thing if I see it and I judge that's it's safe to do so.

Fodencat · 01/02/2026 15:45

Probably get my head kicked in

NamingNoNames · 01/02/2026 15:46

@HappyApper , I challenge it, and get the same sort of response.

I seem to live somewhere that people can't walk down the street without dropping an empty sweet wrapper or crisps packet, finishing a vape or discarding a drink can/water bottle. It's not even a long street.

Fodencat · 01/02/2026 15:47

I go out with my litter picker like an old bag

Springbella · 01/02/2026 15:47

We live on the NC500, you have no idea of the abuse we take when challenging (mainly motorhome users) for dumping their toilets and littering. I’ve seen them empty toilets in lochs, beside roads and leave rubbish behind after their “wild camping” trips, it’s utterly disgusting. We challenge it every single time.

swapsicles · 01/02/2026 15:53

I wanted to the other week.
Pulled up behind a range rover type car at a large farm shop and saw more than one person in the car just discard the wrappers from their hot food straight out the window!
Was very tempted to pick it up and shove it straight back into the window.
I didn't just because I was on my own but wish I'd have had the nerve as I really don't understand people who do this.

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/02/2026 15:56

A police officer in Croydon got his ear bitten off for asking. I remember that story. So I’d think twice. I have picked up and thrown away other people’s crap though.

NamingNoNames · 01/02/2026 15:57

@Springbella , that is revolting. The toilets contain harmful chemicals.

@swapsicles , I'd have said something. It's so often fast food wrappers.
How hard can it be to use a bin.

VanityUnit66 · 01/02/2026 16:01

someone was dropping chocolate wrappers out of their car window the other day as they were parked by my house so I picked them up and posted them back through! I said a very cheery ‘ oh I’m sorry you seem to have dropped this’ and then I walked off fast!

cherrytree12345 · 01/02/2026 16:03

I have told people not to push in a queue a few times, except once in the post office where the woman looked like she would have knifed me - really looked and sounded rough. I did mention it to the counter clerk who said she does it all the time. I still hate that I didnt say anything but I think it was probably for the best. There are so many volatile people these days it is difficult to know the best thing to do

ChurchWindows · 01/02/2026 16:05

I pick up litter with a local group and every single week we fill bags of rubbish. The worst new addition is vaping crap.

As a group we contact the businesses that produce the most rubbish and ask them to provide bins, pass on 'don't drop your rubbish' messages, use less plastic and help with litter clearing by donating bags and pickers or asking staff to help.

The little local businesses are 100% committed to helping but the multinationals don't give a fuck about the fact that they're producing rubbish that their customers then throw in a hedge.

Special mention goes to McDonalds who are the most astonishing cunts you've ever encountered.

Glittertwins · 01/02/2026 16:42

I did and the man threw his cigarette lighter at me and threatened to knife my DH because I said I think you dropped something.

BashfulClam · 01/02/2026 16:45

I have a few times but I am wary in case they get aggressive. I once saw two men in a car and they wiped the condensation off the windows with wiped and dropped the wipes out the window. As I walked past I picked them up and pushed them through the window saying ‘oh you dropped this….you’re welcome!’. Another time I saw a man in his 60’s just throw his cigarette end in the ground and i said ‘There is a bin a foot away you filthy person! Set an example for the younger generation, were you dragged up!’ He gawped at me then picked up his cigarette end is out it in the bin.

i was always shouted at ‘pick that up! Outside isn’t your bin! ‘ my pockets and bag was always full of wrappers. I no saw as bunch of kids throw rubbish over the bridge near my house, I wanted to post about it on the local Facebook but know I’d have got peltets rather than people actually parenting there kids! I think the kids should spend a day out litter picking.

InterestedDad37 · 01/02/2026 16:46

I always challenge litterers. I don't care if they get arsey about it (but I'm physically stocky, so that probably helps).
I cycle too, and I've even given someone back the litter they had thrown out of their car window - it was a busy road with traffic lights, and I knew I'd catch them. The young fellow declined to open his driver side window when I showed him his litter, so to be helpful I placed it under his windscreen wiper.

Pengwern · 01/02/2026 19:13

A woman with her kid and another adult I assumed to be her mother, chucked fast food rubbish out of the window of her car. I was crossing the road and told her to pick it up but expected she was abusive. It’s no wonder so many kids are badly behaved when the adults act like scum.

Chattanoogachoo · 01/02/2026 19:20

As I approached a car with 4 young men in it they opened a door and put a bag of prawn crackers and a foil Chinese container under the car.I just lifted them up, put them on the roof of their car and walked away pretty quickly. They did look quite shocked.

They honestly don’t care. It’s like fighting a constant battle.
