When someone says they’ll turn up “about 10”…

SadlyNotATroll · 31/01/2026 11:28

What time would you expect them to arrive? I was expecting someone to clean my oven this morning at “about 10”. It’s now half 11 and he’s not arrived yet. I reckon he’s forgotten, DH says he never gave a firm time so he might still show up. I’ve messaged him but had no reply. I don’t want to sit in all day waiting for him but not sure if going out would BU?

Ovenclean don't charge a deposit and ime turn up bang on time.

Piknik · 31/01/2026 13:30

Honestly, I know it happens, but ANYONE who tells me

My car has broken down
or
I've got food poisoning

goes down as a fibber in my book.

No need to pile on and tell me about when you had food poisoning, but the amount of times I've been been given that as an excuse in proportion to the number of times I or anyone I know, has actually had food poisoning is laughable. Ditto car breakdown.

Christmasinmecar · 31/01/2026 13:40

Why does anyone get tradies through social media like fb? That's like ringing a random mobile in an advert with no address or company details you can actually check.

Zov · 31/01/2026 13:44

SadlyNotATroll · 31/01/2026 11:59

Well he’s not arrived and has just messaged to say his car has broken down. I did book him through FB and paid a £20 deposit, argh! He had tonnes of 5 star reviews though so I felt comforted by that. Will write it off as a life lesson.

He's lying. I have also suffered at the hands of male tradespeople who don't turn up at the time they're meant to, or they just don't come at all. I (and DH) contacted 4 painters and decorators last year to do an inside painting job. (Several rooms.)

First one made an appointment to come the next day at 5pm. Never turned up.

Second one came and spent an hour here, drinking our coffee and eating our chocolate digestives, and made our evening meal almost an hour late. (He was here 5.45pm to 6.45pm and I couldn't start our meal til he'd gone!) He was late too. Should have been here at 5pm! Promised us a quote by text within 3 days. Never heard a thing. Didn't hear from him again. I messaged him and phoned him 5 or 6 times over 2 days and then gave up.

Third one said he would be here at 4pm this one day. I rang him at 4.30pm to see if he was nearly here as it's half an hour past the time we arranged now. He said 'yes, I'm just pricing up another job about 4 miles away, I will be with you by 5pm.' 5pm came and went, and at 5.30pm I rang him again and he didn't answer, so I texted and asked him if he was still coming. He messaged me back at 6.15pm, and said 'something has come up, so unfortunately, I will have to cancel coming to you tonight.' 🙄He said he would come the next day at around 7pm. Didn't come. I didn't even ring or text him and thought 'fuck you.'

3 days later, he (trademan No 3) turned up at 11am, as I was on the way out. I was just locking the front door, as he pulled up in his van. I didn't know who this was as I had never actually met him. I didn't even realise it was someone for us. He called over as I got into the car, and said 'Mrs Zov? It's Steve Partridge, I've come to do your painting quote.' I said 'you never said you were coming this morning,' and he swore he had phoned yesterday, and left me a voicemail letting me know. (He hadn't phoned!) I had no voicemails, and no missed calls.

'Well I'm here now' he said. I said (truthfully) 'I have a doctor's appointment in 20 minutes and it's a 15 minute drive there (8-10 minutes actually - it's about 4 miles - but I always allow 15 minutes in case of slow traffic/diversions etc...) He said 'I won't be long.' I said 'no you can't come in and do it, because it will make me late for my appointment and I will miss it.' I got in my car. He said 'I've driven 10 miles to get here!' I said 'well you should have come the other night, and the night before that - and you didn't. We've found someone else now anyway!' (We hadn't but I wasn't using him now.)

I drove off. When I came back, a garden ornament of ours that was at the side of the house, was smashed and all over our driveway. I know it was him. Can't prove it.

tl;dr sorry. The fourth one came and gave a quote straight away, and came to do the work a week later - hooray! Then he said he had stumbled upon some 'problems' and the job was going to cost £1200 more than the £1800 we had been quoted. The £1800 was quite a lot to begin with IMO - (we felt it should have been more like £900,) but didn't really want to do it all ourselves... So.... £3000 to paint a kitchen, (12 x 10 feet,) a lounge-diner, (20 x 16 feet,) one small bedroom (10 X 10 feet,) and a small back hallway. (8 X 6 feet!) LOL, fuck off. It was just painting, not even any wallpapering!

We binned him off, paid him for the one day, and all the paint he had bought for the entire job - £300 in total - and did it ourselves. Took 3 weeks and was hard work, but it looks great, and we are proud of ourselves for doing it. It looks lovely.

I don't know why SOOOOO many tradesmen are so fucking awful. I am sure a few of them are OK - but the majority are utter twats for one reason or another. Either rip off merchants, or flaky, or totally unreliable.

(Or all of the above!)

Honestly, if it's at all possible, DH and I will do things ourselves rather than deal with tradesmen now. Many of them are dreadful. No customer care skills at all. Zero.

nb. Steve Partridge is not trademan No 3's real name...

Brefugee · 31/01/2026 13:49

i think a lot of tradies don't want to take on the little jobs because they prefer the big jobs that will last a while and give a more guaranteed income.

(not in UK so probably quite different) when we had our upstairs decorated (paper and paint) they turned up with 2 chaps and each had an apprentice and they were done in just under 2 days - and cleaned up behind themselves.

I was more than happy to keep them supplied with tea, coffee and cake as much as they wanted and gave them 2 crates of beer at the end (which they gave to the apprentices)

When i had the living room done (paint only) it took about 6 hours, but was done over 2 days because the painter (and his apprentice) came to us on the way home from a bigger job, they live in the same village.

It's a question, i think, of being careful who you get in?

I had this with a highly rated oven cleaner. Incredible how unreliable their cars are in that industry! Later research showed the ratings were from friends and now I actively DON'T recommend him.

cantankerousoldcrone · 31/01/2026 13:55

I'd expect him before 10.45 at the latest

user2848502016 · 31/01/2026 13:56

In that situation sometime between 9.50-10.30 any later than that and I’d expect a message to say if they’re still coming or not

itsthetea · 31/01/2026 13:56

945 to 1025

not unreasonable to go out

Zov · 31/01/2026 13:57

Oh and I would expect someone between 9.40 and 10.20 if they said 10.

Imisscoffee2021 · 31/01/2026 14:03

5 mins either side, but then I'm chronically punctual.

taxguru · 31/01/2026 14:21

@Zov

Likewise here. DH now has a garage and two sheds full of tools including a small scaffolding tower, a couple of dozen electric power tools, several tool boxes of tools and many, many, boxes/packets of "bits" like electrical cables/sockets, plumbing connectors, lots of bits of wood/plastic, carpet fitting tools, decorating materials, etc.

We started out when we bought our first marital home with getting tradies in 30 years ago, but over the years, the standards have plummeted and we now try most things ourselves first, and usually do a better job than the so-called professionals in terms of neatness etc. Yes, it's cost thousands to buy all the tools and materials, but we've saved thousands in not paying tradies. So much nicer thinking that we don't have to go through the mind numbing and stressful process of trying to find tradies who'll actually turn up when they say, provide promised quotes, turn up to do the work and then turn up to rectify their cock-ups.

Why would you "write it off"?

Ask for your money back or get him back another time.

Knitterofcrap · 31/01/2026 14:48

To me “about ten” means 9:45 to 10:30

Dollymylove · 31/01/2026 15:15

If it was my DS he will rock up about 3pm
He once turned up at exactly the time he had stated. I needed smelling salts 🤣🤣

Silverbirchleaf · 31/01/2026 15:21

9.45am - 10.15pm. After about 10.30am, I’d ring them if I haven’t heard from them.

BeardofHagrid · 31/01/2026 15:29

I hate this too, I think you should have gone out at 11. People need to learn the hard way 🤷‍♀️

Buscobel · 31/01/2026 15:50

Word of mouth seems to be the most reliable method of getting someone to do something work on your house. Especially if they’re doing a job at neighbours.

This.

ohyesido · 31/01/2026 16:12

I’d assume they aren’t coming if they aren’t there by half ten. How rude

Arlanymor · 31/01/2026 16:15

Half an hour either side, although ideally 15 minutes either side. I met a friend for a drink last night and he said: "See you there between 7:30pm and 8:00pm" so I arrived at 7:45pm on the dot!

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 31/01/2026 16:21

Amazed at all the people who thik that tradesmen due at 10 might arrive at 9:45. What planet is this? On time would be a miracle. Early is just a fantasy. And who wants that anyway?

I agree, in 30 years I don't think we've ever had a tradie turn up "early" for anything, neither for quote nor doing the actual work. Usually when they say "first thing" and I ask for clarity and they say something like 8-00 to 8-30, they turn up more like 9-00 to 9-30 do an hours work and then beggar off for bacon buns for their morning break around 10-30!!

Friendlygingercat · 31/01/2026 16:53

I make allowances for tradespeople because they cant always tell how long a task is going to take, or if they will have all the parts necessary. They can easily get stuck on a long job as more problems emerge. Obviously they cannot leave someone with a half done job if it involves something like water or electricity. Tradies often attempt to fit small jobs in between bigger ones and this can go awry.Thats why I always insist on a mobile number. If it gets too late I can always call or text (or they can contact me) to reschedule.

user1476613140 · 31/01/2026 17:02

I phoned a local locksmith to see if he could fit a bathroom lock but he wouldn't
He doesn't deal with internal doors🤷‍♀️

Can obviously afford to turn jobs down.
