Car Headlamps

Are car headlamps far, far too bright these days, or am I just getting old?

I drive one route in particular, a busy two-lane road with no street lighting, and the oncoming headlamps are really dazzling.

I’m not having a go at the drivers, I expect mine are equally irritating.

I think the govt is trying to do something about it. Quite what, I don’t know though.

Yes, they definitely are brighter a so big on some models.

Oncoming vehicles sometimes flash their lights at me. I've adjusted my light settings to as low as possible, but it still happens.

Alwaysontherun · 30/01/2026 15:44

Yes they are way too bright these days.

isitmytime · 30/01/2026 15:48

Yes! And I think there’s and I creased number of bigger/higher cars on the road so if you have a “normal” hatchback you’re blinded!

TheeNotoriousPIG · 30/01/2026 15:50

Yes. To start with, I assumed that it was because I'd recently moved to a very rural area, where you don't see streetlights (so the headlights stood out more) until you get towards the town. Then I noticed that I had the same issue in well-lit areas, so now I end up squinting/wearing sunglasses to cope when driving in the evenings.

I don't drive at nights anymore because of this. It's really limiting.

I don't know if it's my astigmatism or other issues, but it totally blinds me for seconds and makes me too unsafe to drive. It's SHIT.

minou123 · 30/01/2026 15:54

OMG Yes! They are white lights and so bright.
I hate it.
To.me, it's like the car has full beams on and it's blinding.

Its a huge pet hate of mine.

organisedadmin · 30/01/2026 15:56

Some of them are blinding!

NetballHoop · 30/01/2026 16:03

We have a new(ish) car and a little one which is 28 years old. The difference in the power of the headlamps is huge yet both pass their MOTs.

Apparently it is to do with the blue component of the light frequency emitted by LED bulbs. Accidents in over 55s driving at night has increased dramatically.

You can get glasses that allegedly filter out that frequency of light. I've ordered some and report back whether they work. They should arrive in the next day or so 🤞

Yes, it’s awful. I stick to quieter back roads at night now with less traffic because I get dazzled by lights and really disoriented. I’ve also got night glare glasses which help a little bit. I was driving behind someone last night and a car came round the corner with lights absolutely blaring and the car in front slammed on the brakes so they were clearly blinded too. I’ve had to almost stop before because the lights are just all I can see. Something definitely needs to be done.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 30/01/2026 16:20

They’re awful but I think have got better in the last year ish. I have to drive over the ashdown forest quite a bit and I got so pissed off I just put mine on main beam. Still not as bright as the bloody led strip lights. It’s dangerous.
