Why Are Some MumsNetters Not Parents?

SavvymummyLondon · 29/01/2026 21:30

Hi All, long time follower, first time poster.

Prior to becoming a parent, things targeting parents & carers were completely off my radar. However, I have noticed a few times people who self-declare that they are not parents or carers post on the MumsNet AIBU page and I think to myself...but why? 🤔

I found out about MumsNet when I was expecting, and started engaging with the content once I became a mum. Before that, MumsNet wouldn't have even exisited in my universe!

I'm genuinely curious.

I joined when ttc. Not pregnant yet, I like having a nosy round. Quite like the MJ boards as well as AIBU. i don't think mumsnet is just for mums anymore really it covers a lot.

ApplebyArrows · 29/01/2026 22:26

Some people seem to actively avoid having anything to do with parents until they become parents themselves. Others are good friends with lots of parents, have lots of children in their lives without having children of their own, and might share many of the concerns parents have.

WhereIsMyLight · 29/01/2026 22:29

I think you’re probably in the minority for joining when you’re pregnant. I would say a lot join because they’ve seen an AIBU on socials or daily mail. Or they’ve googled “how to get a red wine stain out of carpet” or “best lasagna recipe”. Whether you join for the scandals in AIBU or the boring advice, you inevitably end up staying for both.

It’s a forum. People can talk about anything. That’s why there are multiple topics. It’s really rare to find a predominantly female space, so it attracts women (and some men), some are parents, some are trying to be parents, some it didn't work out for, some absolutely do not want to be parents.

Must be time for me to wash my bedclothes again. Been at least a week since someone asked this

SliceofTosst · 29/01/2026 22:32

I just did a generic Google on something and one of the responses was a MN answer. I clicked on, saw loads of answers and then started scrolling other topics.

Bonjovispjs · 29/01/2026 22:33

You need to be a parent to read a thread about Eastenders? Who knew? 😲

TwoBagsOfCompost · 29/01/2026 22:36

I joined just so I can click on YABU in threads like this.

Femalemachinest · 29/01/2026 22:36

Stumbled across aibu and stayed

BarbarianBabs · 29/01/2026 22:36

I’m here for the spider willies! 🕷️

sadly we have not been blessed with children after years of trying. Unlikely we will have them now. Realistically have about 2 more years before it will be a definite no.

There are lots of people in here with great humour and quick wit which I really enjoy.

Monty27 · 29/01/2026 22:36

@SavvymummyLondon does this realisation upset you, or somehow meet with your disapproval when someone had the audacity to even declare they are childless, on Mumsnet.
Have you ever come across the topics board? There's even men on here. What about that!

hufngids · 29/01/2026 22:37

Changingplace · 29/01/2026 21:39

You really might want to give a little bit of thought and self awareness about the various reasons why a ‘mumsnetter’ might not have children, sadly many of those reasons aren’t much of a giggle :)

Well said.

Where else can you find arguments about whether it's wrong to be pissed off if someone wakes you up at 2am for stupid reasons😁

Such as the 2.30am cat dilemma .😁

BatchCookBabe · 29/01/2026 22:42

If you are a long time follower, you will know then that this tedious thread is posted on here every other week.

SO WHAT IF NON-PARENTS COME ON HERE!? It is a chat forum and an advice forum. It can be very helpful for many things. Things evolve. MUMSNET has. It has men on it too sometimes! 😱

Some have lost a child or children, suffered several miscarriages, had several failed rounds of IVF, but as long as that makes you 'giggle', hey.

Nice.

This. I joined mn when I was ttc, became pregnant, had two miscarriages and then , sadly on top of that my twin babies died the week they were born. This was two years ago. I joined a wonderful thread with other loss mums and it kept me sane and I did go on to bring my baby home but I'd hate to have thought I was silly for being on this when I didnt have a living child. Not everyone wants or gets to be a parent but they are welcome here in my eyes. Not having a child on mumsnet is nothing to giggle about.

MissSophiaGrace · 29/01/2026 22:46

Sigh. This AGAIN!

Leo800 · 29/01/2026 22:54

The parenting threads are the most tedious threads on here. I find other topics much more engaging & you don’t need to be a mum to enjoy them.

LadyLolaRuben · 29/01/2026 23:05

Because its a great forum for support, advice and ideas for many things women related.

This is a bot / mn generated attempt at click bait. The op wants nt be back.

Or they'll be back doing a big doe eyed faux "oh I didn't mean to cause any offence. I was just genuinely curious".

Strange how everyone who starts one of these identical threads is always "genuinely curious" too.

Most of the time they can’t spell / format “Mumsnet” correctly either

Wednesdaysotherchild · 29/01/2026 23:25

I was on mumsnet for the ttc, miscarriage, IVF and infertility chat - discovered all the rest and the childless board too. I’m lucky that I am now a parent but if I hadn’t been so lucky, I’d still be here!

Guerlainade · 29/01/2026 23:26

Mumsnet is for every woman

Rgf · 29/01/2026 23:29

Adult female who appreciates the opinion of other female adults who are willing to tell you that you are doing too much when you are doing too much, give advice when they have faced a similar experience, let you know that dress most likely won’t do you any favours or fuck what your “friends” are saying they are taking the piss…(also without going to deep not every pregnancy ended the way we hoped and sometimes supporting/receiving support from others who have been through the same is invaluable)

AwfullyGood · 29/01/2026 23:34

OP, if you can recommend me an alternative online female focused forum, I'll take my non performing uterus and damaged ovaries, and I'll toddle off there instead!

Until then, you're stuck with me.

Why are reddit users not red?

🤣🤣👏👏

NotMeAtAll · 29/01/2026 23:37

Because they're interested in what's posted, not the name of the site.
