To seriously recommend Ireland

Before I start I completely get that it can be expensive, the weather is bad and many Irish residents are emigrating for accommodation & opportunities. But....
A very very large proportion of the Irish people seem put on earth specifically to restore visitors faith in human nature. Genuine and warm, great sense of humour
Many women in particular supposedly find Ireland blissfully relaxing, not just because it is a laidback culture but because the general male culture seems to revolve less around making women feel uncomfortable than in other countries.

Some of the countryside and heritage is literally heavenly. Co. Waterford, especially its western extremities eg Dungarvan. Ardmore, Lismore, is an undiscovered gem.

Yes its not cheap but the food can be exceptional.

Most ordinary people seem exceptionally well disposed to foreign visitors and many have relatives abroad.

In rural Ireland you can drive for miles without seeing a car.

The music is brilliant and the people seem enormously invested in live music.

Well, that's my tuppence.

The fact you just said “idc” and “fuck you, you nasty cunt” just goes to show what a rude person you are yourself .

Hi Brenda 👋

The violence against women being talked about refers to Northern Ireland figures . However unfortunately the majority of these are domestic violence issues . So being murdered or maimed by their own partners .

I have lived many places including UK and think Ireland is the best . No country is without its world wide issues like housing healthcare, illegal immigration.
You don't live in Ireland for the weather but when it is nice , my God it is beautiful. I also think despite our religious background we are quite tolerant about diversity. First law approving gay marriage in Europe , first to implement plastic bag guidelines , great response to Covid . Leader was a half Egyptian married gay man .

And one of the best sense of humor, is craic on the planet.

So it’s not under Irish jurisdiction and not policed by an Garda Siochana.

Come on? Violence against women in the republic of Ireland is a huge problem, everyday some fucker is in court for torture, abuse, burning, scalding, beating his partner/ex partner. That is not counting the women who died, familicide is an issue, son’s beating mothers, murdering their mother or father.
I don’t know why pps aren’t more aware of the violence or are blissfully ignorant about it.
They’re the cases reported.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 31/01/2026 07:53

Leader was a half Egyptian married gay man.
Indian …
It is far from the worst but there is a lot of learning to do and awareness about domestic violence

Soonenough · 31/01/2026 07:58

@EmeraldShamrock000 Oops. Sorry yes you are right . From Mumbai .

I really liked Leo V as a leader, modern, well spoken, well dressed, articulate and educated as an ex GP he knew people. 🥰

I honestly feel.like I miss something when it comes to Ireland, my least favourite European country. Dublin is bloody awful, the rural areas can't compete with Scotland, and the friendliness must have been taking a week off.

romdowa · 31/01/2026 08:15

Im irish and can agree on some points although I dont find it very relaxing. My husband from se england loves it here though and wouldn't ever move back to the UK, especially while our dc are young.

Hi Brenda 👋

Yeh because every single person in Ireland is a clone of Brenda. It is usually people of lower intelligence that judge an entire nation based on a bad experience with a handful of people

Rural Ireland is kind of similar to rural England, but without the overcrowding. English people love rural Ireland because it reminds them of what rural England used to be like. I remember saying “isn’t it quiet” to my partner, but then thinking “hang on… this is normality. This is what the countryside is supposed to be like. It’s rural Essex, with its endless housing estates and country lanes clogged with traffic, that’s abnormal.”

I agree.
My other half was pushing me out of the bed on a bank holiday in Ireland to get ahead of the crowds going to be beach. He was confused to find almost no-one else there (west coast).

Anonanonanonagain · 31/01/2026 10:57

Still laughing at some of the replies - I am only waiting on someone to comment on our over abundance of leprechauns now to add to the incorrect assumptions about our island and please stop confusing NI with Ireland. Two countries on one island thanks to a certain 'kingdom' trying to take us over. We are not the same. NI is very very different to Ireland.

Tis indeed. Wales where I live is exactly this. Not one nation at all. Our regional variations are delineated.

It’s why Irish people seem so warm and friendly. The more personal space you have, the happier you feel. It’s the same with Australia. British people will say “god the Aussies are so much friendlier than people back home.” But that’s because they’ve got room to move and breathe.

When you cram too many people together, they get on each other’s nerves. I’m in rural Essex (Colchester) and it’s a f-ing nightmare. Developers are jamming new houses onto every bit of available land. The traffic is hell, and even driving to the shops is an ordeal. We’re not meant to live like this. Look at Zoo animals. What happens when you cram too many animals in the same cage? They bite each other!!

How? I elaborated. She didn't like my shorthand and got stroppy because of my experience? Unless her name is actually Brenda then that's not my problem.

I elaborated to the person who asked. If you think what she said about my dad is ok then you are just as vile as she is. And I'm so sorry for the use of shorthand text. For what she said, yes I think calling her a cunt and saying fuck you is justified.

Leo isn’t married to Matt!

fairfat40 · 31/01/2026 14:26

I have an Irish passport and an Irish parent and was brought up in a community where 70% of us had one or both parents who were born in Ireland. What is important to remember is there is sadly still a very strong anti British feeling among many Irish. A friend (both parents Irish but brought up UK now married to an Irish man) who has lived in Ireland most of her adult life says: she experiences a lot of prejudice. I love Ireland, but outside the comfort of close relatives and polite hotel workers, I’m not sure I’d do it.

Anonanonanonagain · 31/01/2026 14:35

Hollyhobbi · 31/01/2026 14:15

Leos father is Indian so i am not sure where the Egyptian thing is coming from. His father was from Mumbai and correct he is not married but he could be such is our laws :)

Anonanonanonagain · 31/01/2026 14:36

I have never noticed an anti brit thing here and I am here most of my life. Up North possibly but not in Ireland. We do take the piss out of the English it has to be said and West Brit is a common joke aimed at people, its not a slur but it would be a negative connotation!

I worked with a Spanish woman who was awful, utterly self-centred. I didnt decide based on this that all Spanish people or the country itself wasn't worth getting to know. Really disappointing to read this.

Im irish plenty of men go out of there way to make women feel afraid, dosmetic abuse is massive here

So your issue is the fact that you're Irish and don't like my experience, so you resort to saying I'm not intelligent.
