DD's friend got lipstick (I think) on DD's brand new Stackers jewellery box. It's made of 'fake leather'. DD is distraught. I'm annoyed. I've tried soapy water (washing up liquid) and a make-up remover wipe, but no joy. What else can I try?? It's a pale pink colour, so the lipstick mark is really obvious :( . I don't have any hairspray, which I've seen suggested online.

It's this material

(And p.s I know not a real AIBU, but posting here for traffic out of desperation)

Would a warm (not hot!) iron, if you covered it in kitchen paper and gently ironed it, melt the lipstick onto the paper maybe?

Treviarpelli · 29/01/2026 18:04

I think I’d try a hairdryer rather than an iron, warm the stain and then maybe washing up liquid and bicarbonate of soda if you have any? That’s my go to for oily stains on clothes and I’m guessing lipstick contains oil

FlappicusSmith · 29/01/2026 18:14

I'm wary of putting heat on it as, presumbly, ultimately it's made of some form of plastic? And I don't want to weld the stain on to it!

I'll try bicarb...

hand sanitiser?

MissMoneyFairy · 29/01/2026 18:17

I'd get in touch with Stackers and ask their advice, they are not cheap boxes so hopefully they have decent customer service

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 29/01/2026 18:18

Make up remover?

ooscal · 29/01/2026 18:48

If everything fails, cover the mark with a cool/cute sticker or something like that.

minipie · 29/01/2026 18:53

Magic sponge is my go to.

Goinggrey88 · 29/01/2026 21:06

Try a bit of rubbing alcohol.

Bessica · 29/01/2026 21:12

Micellar water

Thank you for acknowledging that this isn't right for AIBU. I don't even know if there is a Household forum or Fix-It forum. Maybe Fashion?

That said, do you have Amodex around there?

Can you post a photo?

Contrarymary30 · 29/01/2026 21:25

My son swears by wd40 for removing stains . I'd try on the underneath of the box first though .

Sohelpmegod25 · 29/01/2026 21:29

I agree hand sanitiser is strong stuff
I’d get a cotton wool bud and try a tiny amount of- can’t make it any worse than it is?

ultimately tho I’d be asking the friends parents to replace this item -
this isn’t acceptable

Mindfulmother01 · 29/01/2026 21:46

The pink stuff paste, just a tiny bit to see at first. I've never known it to not remove a stain. Probably not strictly to use on fabric but I used on my daughter's make up chair and it came straight off

FlappicusSmith · 29/01/2026 23:37

Ok, think I've still got some hand sanitiser somewhere. I'll try that first, if not I'll go and get some micellar water/ pink stuff/ magic sponges.

Thanks all

Bicarb would be my first attempt, apply a tiny bit with a damp cloth.

MyLovingPombear · 29/01/2026 23:46

You should try elbow grease spray, the yellow one not the pink one. It has gotten oil, Indian curry and grass stains out for me and it doesn't bleach mark stuff. Hope it works for you!

Echoing this! And the magic eraser

thats a good idea.

LucyLoo1972 · 30/01/2026 03:16

id be fed up like your DD.

How old is she?

I have the same boxes and they are not cheap but mine are mirrored glass so I cant help with stain removal.

WinnerWinnerChickenDinnner · 30/01/2026 03:26

I've had success removing makeup off of a white dress using hair mousse. My friend said to use hairspray but I only had the mousse, and luckily it worked.

Remembertobekind · 30/01/2026 04:16

Proper rubbing alcohol got a biro mark off a brand new cream raincoat. Hand sanitizer did nothing for the stain even though I guess some do have some alcohol. How on earth did the friend get lipstick on it? I'd keep away from the iron tip though. My own trick for removing lipstick from clothes is to rub in talcum powder and leave it to sit for a couple of hours to absorb the oil base before washing. It works with any oil stain but you'll have pigment to get out too.
