Do people just read the titles then post these day?

Just that. It’s infuriating.Nearly every post I’ve read in the last few weeks has had people commenting to ask a question where the answer is clearly stated in the OP, usually starts within the first few comments. What’s going on. Is reading comprehension that poor? I get people are short on time but then why bother to be involved in a forum thread with strangers at all. Or are they just reading the title or first couple of sentences then weighing in? It’s not even details that are added later that it’s happening, the answers are right there in the OP.

I don't know if it's a new thing OP - I've been moaning about it for years!

One thing I have noticed more and more in the last year or two - excessively long opening posts. I'm not talking about giving details to avoid drip feeding, I'm talking about really long paragraphs saying next to nothing.

Especially the ones of 3-4 paragraphs of pre-amble starting "I (34F)..." which always makes me think they're describing their norks. Grin

They can normally be condensed to 3-4 sentences.

Or someone starts a thread about a celeb and someone also answers ‘Who?’ Or ‘should I know who they are?’

well the site isn’t written with you in mind so no, no one gives a shit that you can’t use Google

I saw somewhere ages ago (probably on here) that the average reading comprehension age in the UK is that of a 9 year old. It’s something they have to take into account when making signage and public information things.

Even my DP who is an intelligent chap doesn’t read things properly and misses important steps when filling in forms online or trying to book something. It’s like only half the information goes in.

This does sound about right. Where has it gone so wrong. 🙈

Especially awful when it's a thread about somebody's death and people who knew their work and are feeling upset suddenly have some numpty saying things like 'Never heard of him, soz. What did he do?'

Re literacy - I don't think it's ever been very good. It's much more visible now because of the internet and social media. It's very hard to avoid writing these days. Decades ago people who were illiterate or really struggled with reading and writing could get jobs where it didn't matter and were often able to disguise it to others. 'Oh, I've forgotten my glasses, could you just tell me if this is plain flour or self-raising?' Not nearly so easy to do that now.

@BauhausOfEliott is the Victorian Orphan Witch's Apprentice a real program?
Sounds amazing.

marshmallowfluffster · 31/01/2026 00:20

Facebook is the same

post “got this top from next, only £20 and they had loads of colours”

first comments will be
”where from?”
”how much”
”did they have any other colours”

ARGH

I think sometimes this is also just performative, i.e . "This is too low brow for me to have heard about."

No, I just made it up off the top of my head, but now I think it’s the book I need to write 🤣

YouAndMeDays · 04/02/2026 15:35

What grinds my gears is the posters who post on a thread on page, say, six, replying to the original post, without seeing if the original poster has posted with some more information since then.

grumpygrape · 04/02/2026 15:57

The thread where the OP wants to be given Mumsnet ‘permission’ to take her dog to a No Pet caravan and posters are still suggesting she askes if the caravan park has a dog friendly van…..or this, or that, or the other, when she has already given daft ‘excuses’ answered as to why everyone’s suggestions aren’t for her so she’s just going to take the bloody dog anyway.

Aaaaaah, there, I feel better for tryping that !

YelramBob · 04/02/2026 16:02

Can't you try vitamin D?

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 04/02/2026 16:23

Cancel the cheque!*

*Became shorthand for a while for posters who don't RTFT (read the full/effing thread).

It was a great thread about some wedding problem or other, except that after the first hundred posts or so a large number of idiots were intermittently just posting those three words and assuming they were the first to come up with the idea. That had first been suggested in about the fifth post.

It’s awful especially when the thread is something serious like relationship, health problems or money worries.

I think we need a new rule- if your post shows you can’t be bothered to have at the very least, read all of the OPs posts, your comment can be reported and deleted.

Yes! I put this in site stuff and asked for this rule to be made. I can understand if it is a mad wall of text but if it is a short, straightforward OP there really is no excuse.

OP: “My 12 year old son and I left the theatre at 8pm. We got a taxi home which took half an hour.”

Replies: “Well, how old is the child?”
”I wouldn’t have a child out until midnight!”
”I won’t let my children get the night bus by themselves!”
”Six years old is much too young for a late night!”

It’s something that makes MN less and less enjoyable.

Oh, heavens, there’s a thread where the OP has said her husband can’t drive for medical reasons.

I can’t be arsed to count the posts saying he has to learn to drive, why doesn’t he drive, etc. etc. Scream inside my head.

Yep!

There was one thread where the OP said that she was disabled and needed a flat with a lift. She really wanted to live in central London near the theatres. She couldn’t drive and had a good budget.

So a load of people sent her links to rambling cottages with multi level gardens in the countryside. Which were lovely - but exactly what she didn’t want.

That thread is so one sided against the op taking her dog and yet still she thinks it's ok to do so.
Why the flaming heck did she ask if she is going to ignore everyone.

It's very Reddit.
