It turns out Gen Z is becoming less religious, not more religious

https://humanists.uk/2026/01/28/gen-z-churchgoing-is-actually-still-declining-new-british-social-attitudes-survey-shows/

New analysis of recently published British Social Attitudes Survey data by Humanists UK has shown that churchgoing, including among Gen Z, has continued its long-term decline. The findings are consistent with the Church of England’s and Catholic Church’s own church attendance records. They undermine YouGov polling for the Bible Society which recently showed the opposite trend and triggered a spate of media coverage for what appeared to be a dramatic and sudden change.

British social attitudes survey is more accurate than online surveys as it uses
probability-based random sampling, not online opt-in panels; online data collection with telephone as a backup option; and careful weighting and validation.

Hopefully this means that the American Christian right's repeated attempts to export their culture wars here re abortion do not work. I am religious myself but I belong to a small and progressive denomination (pro choice, conducts gay marriage, female clergy, egalitarian). In my mind the only Christian denominations which fit this description are the Unitarians and the Quakers and they are very small.

I was surprised when I heard about bible sales and suspected it was propaganda. I stopped going to church as I never felt I belonged and it didn’t reflect my version of what it should be. Sounds like you’ve found a liberal sect which is good but for me even fundamentally it sexist and outdated. No matter the lovely things Jesus said, his disciples were all male. And for it to take this long to ‘allow’ a female archbishop is crazy. Christianity should be trailblazing equality from its fundamental values.
the Gen Z in my family - one is very Christian and absolutely lovely and non judgemental but she has to navigate a whole load of dogma and bullshit. I’m glad my kids aren’t as one is gay and already he’s had religious people telling him, unasked they don’t agree. I just don’t believe it’s possible to have dogma and progression at the same time. I hope it is on its way out along with all religion.

I'm always very surprised how often the media cite 'a yougov poll' as if it has any credibility in such matters.

I joined up out of interest once as a lot of people talk about how it's easy to make money from surveys but gave up quickly as many of the questions were poorly written and ambiguous so impossible to give an answer that reflected my opinion.

So it for this reason, as well as the opt in nature that makes the results of their 'polls' completely meaningless. It's about as reliable as asking MN, which would lead you to conclude that the average household income is £150k pa, the average daily fruit and veg consumption is 8 portions and the fraction of the population on Mountjaro is 70% and the rest have always been BMI 21 so have no reason to use it.

I mean, C of E and Catholic aren't the only options!
