Pic of my daughter's eye - is this serious?

BingoJingo · 28/01/2026 18:20

I am sorry for posting here but I thought I might get a swift response on AIBU. My daughter has been unwell with an ear infection, sore throat and unwell since last Friday. Her eye was sore last night and today it has become all red, currently looking like this. Is this serious, do I need to attend A&E? Her eye is not sore but the lid is a bit inflammed. Does anyone have any advice? I did a reverse search and Google said it looked like a chemical burn and requires immediate attention which has completely freaked me out! Thank you in advance.

I can’t see a picture. Unless she’s got chemicals near her eye it won’t be that. If you’re worried seek actual medical advice though.

FreshInks · 28/01/2026 18:22

When you saw the GP about the ear infection did he see her eye, or has it developed since then?

FreshInks · 28/01/2026 18:23

If she hasn’t had access to any chemicals then it is unlikely that she needs to go to A&E. How old is she?

She went to the urgent treatment centre at the hospital on Saturday evening and saw the emergency GP, he said she had a bad ear infection in both ears and prescribed antibiotics. But the eye was not at all inflamed at that point. It has literally just happened today.

Well it’ll only be a chemical burn if she’s had access to chemicals.
I can’t see a picture.

Yes this is my thinking. She is 15 and uses the eyelash serum but has never had a reaction like this before.

She uses eyelash serum I don't know is this a chemical? She has used these products for some time with no reaction previously.

Have you googled blepharitus? Without the pic, I may be completely wrong!! But I get that and it's bright red around the eye and an inflamed eyelid. Alternatively, my daughter has had cellulitis of the eye which also can present like that and that would need to be seen.

BingoJingo · 28/01/2026 18:30

Yes I thought it was blepheratis or conjunctivitis when I looked on the NHS website earlier today and gave flannel compressions with cooled down boiled water. Oh let me look up cellulitis.

24Dogcuddler · 28/01/2026 18:31

Conjunctivitis can make the eyelid red and swollen. I’d bathe with cotton wool dipped in cool boiled water with a bit of salt in it. Try the pharmacy tomorrow she might need Chloramphenicol drops or ointment.

Dramainclass · 28/01/2026 18:33

I'd ask the pharmacist to have a look - they'll tell you quickly if it needs a dr to look at it.

828Pax · 28/01/2026 18:34

Picture is showing now! Doesn't look like cellulitis, that would typically be hot, red skin to touch. However, I am unsure if it makes the eye bloodshot. Conjunctivitis can come up with viral infections so that's possible?

BingoJingo · 28/01/2026 18:34

Thank you for all your responses, the pic has been published now.

Pharmacist is a good call - is there a 24 hour Asda or similar near you? Or a late opening chemist?

This 👆Take her to your local supermarket pharmacy which is likely still open and ask the Pharmacist. Probably not serious but it’ll stop you worrying and they may suggest some eye drops.

Yes I will do that thank you all.

Blepharitis isn’t a condition of the eye so much as the lids. It’s a chronic condition causing dry itchy lids, sometimes with crusty bits (for want of a better description). I’ve had it since childhood that’s how I know. It doesn’t sound/look like blepharitis to me.

TheBerry · 28/01/2026 18:56

You very rarely need to rush to A&E. Just call 111 for starters. It could be conjunctivitis or a reaction to her serum but isn't likely to be anything awful. Does she wear contacts?

KingOlive · 28/01/2026 19:14

It looks like episcleritis and may be the start of viral conjunctivitis if she has been recently unwell. I wouldn’t worry too much as long as her vision isn’t affected. Pop to the pharmacy tomorrow.

HMW19061 · 28/01/2026 19:14

It looks like a conjunctivitis, given that she’s been unwell with other symptoms it’s likely a viral conjunctivitis. keep it clean, tell her not to touch her eye and if she does then wash her hands so she doesn’t spread it, if it doesn’t settle in a few days then go to the pharmacy for some Chloramphenicol ointment/drops. No need to rush out and get her seen tonight.

I know this rationally but it was the google response that just freaked me out... Anyway I have just taken her to the chemist and he said that it's a burst blood vessel caused by her blowing her nose.... I just would never have thought this so I am glad I took her and have some peace of mind. Thanks again everyone.

You should call your local eye clinic. It’s specsavers who do the NHS emergency appointments here, but I know some places have specific hospitals for eyes. Find out where yours is and get her seen, if it needs A&E after examination you will be told, if not she will be treated by the clinic.
