Taking diazapam for the first time. Handhold?

I have a small prescription for diazapam for severe anxiety around my mum's funeral. My GP has advised me to take half (1mg) at home first and I'm freaking terrified of taking it. I'm on my own too which isn't helping.

1mg might even touch the sides. I agree with GP advice to try it at home first. I bet you won’t even notice it.

Oh op that’s nothing. I had a bigger dose than that for a back spasm and assumed I’d be glassy eyed on the sofa for hours but I didn’t even notice it.

I’m so sorry about your mum x

PollyPhonic · 27/01/2026 20:42

1 mg of diazepam is a tiny dose - the usual entry-level dose is 2mg. It will make the noise in your head quieten down a bit. It may make you feel very slightly sleepy. Everything will seem less terrible than it did 30 mins before.

Honestly, that’s it. Take it, it’ll be fine. Nothing dramatic will happen, it should make you feel slightly less shit.

ThePrecisionsifthisislove · 27/01/2026 20:42

1mg is barely worth taking.
I doubt you'll notice any difference but do appreciate you don't want to be spaced out.

BengalBangle · 27/01/2026 20:44

You'll barely notice any difference on 1mg: it's a feeble dose.

Coffeeishot · 27/01/2026 20:45

I was prescribed it as a muscle relaxant, it was a small dose, i.was honestly fine , take it before you go to bed tonignt,

I am sorry about your mum.

OhBollocks23 · 27/01/2026 20:46

I'm sorry for your loss, firstly.

It was a long time ago so I can't recall the dose, but it was low. Took for the same reason as you, and I recall the Dr very clearly said he was giving me something to dull the edges, but that would not be so strong as to mess with remembering the day, as I would come to regret that.

He was right; I hope this isn't inappropriate, as I mean it to be positive, but I have very warm memories of my parent's funeral. I was 'myself' enough to react, and communicate well, and grieve, but the day itself lacked the rawness of the grief if that makes sense. I can't really explain it any better.

Whyhaveibeencutoutofmamsnot · 27/01/2026 20:48

Do you feel less anxious about the situation now you have the diazepam in the house?
Just having it in your bag can help with anxiety as you know you can use it if needed

Cryingatthegym · 27/01/2026 20:49

Diazepam is lovely! Although admittedly I've only ever taken small doses and not for the reason you're taking it. It makes everything feel temporarily wonderful.

Pleatherandlace · 27/01/2026 20:58

I agree with others, you won’t even notice 1mg. I’d take 2mgs on the day, you will absolutely feel like yourself just without the raw edge. Hope this makes things that tiny bit easier for you. X

This is what I want. I've been having such horrible anxiety and panic attacks because of my mum's declining health and feel stuck in panic mode which is a horrible way to live.

I lost my partner to a medication reaction so I'm genuinely terrified of taking new meds - it'll be better once I've taken it and know it's safe, if that makes sense

On a mundane note, I'm holding off on taking it until the washing has finished because I need clean clothes for tomorrow!

honeyfox · 27/01/2026 21:09

It's a very small dose, honestly. I get prescribed 2mg twice a day for back spasms with tramadol as well. The combination makes me sleepy but the valium on it's own doesn't make me feel much different.

I'm so sorry about your mum, I hope you get through the funeral ok.

PinkLemonadee · 27/01/2026 21:11

Thank you, I really appreciate that!

TheMentalMentalLoad · 27/01/2026 21:11

I’m sorry for your loss OP. As others have said 1mg is hardly anything. I was on 4x5mg daily for a few weeks. I was able to stop without any side effects or withdrawals.

RubyFatball · 27/01/2026 21:13

I’m sorry for your loss OP. Honestly opening up and getting supported (on here) is probably going to do more to help your anxiety and grief than 1mg. Have you got support in real life? Friends, family - grief charities offer bereavement counselling - it sounds like you could use more than a virtual hand hold. Hugs.

OSTMusTisNT · 27/01/2026 21:14

I used to take 2mg for my flying phobia. I didn't feel any different but it stopped my heart racing.

(Also turned me weirdly sociable offering sweets to strangers sitting in the same row as me and I bought god knows what from the duty free 🙈).

Monster6 · 27/01/2026 21:14

You’ll just feel slightly less anxious op. It’ll sort you right out. But 1 mg is a tiny dose, very safe and it’ll do what you want it to ☺️

WTFiswrongwithworld · 27/01/2026 21:23

Am sorry you are feeling so anxious, losing a Mum is so heartbreaking, they are irreplaceable.
For context I was prescribed 5mgs three times a day for back pain and I was still a fully functioning human .

Maddy70 · 27/01/2026 21:25

I have a 5mg just to go to the doctor. You'll be fine. You won't notice 1mg

WearyAuldWumman · 27/01/2026 21:29

It'll be fine.

I was prescribed it when my husband died. I only took the 1mg at first, but a retired nurse friend advised me to take the full 2mg tablet for the day of the funeral.

I'm sorry for your loss. In my case, the Diazepam helped me to calm down in the evenings. The 2 mg dose on the morning of the funeral did help me to cope.

OtherS · 27/01/2026 21:35

I get 10mg for MRIs and don't much notice it. Am still scared of MRIs! I obviously wouldn't drive or drink, but I'm quite capable of getting myself out of the hospital and home alone, and continuing my day as normal. You'll be fine.

As someone who has suffered both extreme anxiety and the loss of their mum, I'm so sorry and I wish you all the best.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/01/2026 21:37

It’ll take the edge off for you but nothing extreme. Best of luck, saying goodbye to your mother is very difficult, take care.

auserna · 27/01/2026 21:42

Diazepam is lovely, but I wonder whether you'll even notice 1mg. I'm quite small and usually take 5mg. I can feel the effect, but there's no lessening of awareness - it's not like being drunk.

Hope it helps.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 27/01/2026 21:45

💐💐💐 for you and your mum.

Dont worry...
1mg will barely touch the sides though so I wouldnt worry.. it may not even be enough to really take the edge off
