No hot water in hotel

Would you think this was acceptable?

Stayed in a nice apartment style hotel. First day there, it was great. The morning of check out we went to all have showers and there was no hot water. Had to wash my hair in cold water but couldn't face a cold shower! I'm a person who needs a shower every day otherwise I start to smell, even with antiperspirant etc. so this wasn't great, I know most people would probably be fine to miss a day.

The hot water was fixed but not in time as we had to check out.

Got an apology after the second time of complaining but nothing else. Am I wrong in thinking hot water is s basic part of the package when booking a room and we should have been offered a small discount on the next trip or offered a percentage refund? I was offered a cup of tea.

Did you post this the other day? If so what refund did you actually ask for in the end?

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 27/01/2026 18:10

No, not me!I asked for a voucher towards another stay or a discount.

There have been an awful lot of hotels with no hot water recently!

Not aiming that at you OP, but it seems to be a widespread problem this week!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 27/01/2026 18:18

I had it 12 years ago in Warsaw. Nice hotel,3 days in no hot water. But as their hot water is centrally controlled, like new york, not much we could do.

LightYearsAgo · 27/01/2026 18:19

I'm sure I read this thread title the other day, what's with the cold waters?

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 27/01/2026 18:27

Had no idea it was do common, it hasn't happened to me before. The hotel was in Glasgow by the way.

They have to provide hot water in a bucket. Haven't they done that?

MimiGC · 28/01/2026 12:31

This happened to us in a London hotel, hot water was off for a whole day. They gave us 50% discount on our next stay, which I thought was very fair.

Not if you don't want to go back, a partial refund is much fairer. Plus kettles and they pay for use of a shower in a private gym, other hotel or pool

Hot water is a basic expectation when you book accommodation, especially somewhere described as “nice” or apartment-style. Having no hot water on the morning of checkout is a genuine service failure, not a minor inconvenience. An apology is appropriate, but it’s also reasonable to expect some form of goodwill gesture — a partial refund, a discount on a future stay, or similar. A cup of tea is… pretty weak, honestly.

LVhandbagsatdawn · 28/01/2026 12:46

Sorry but why on earth would they refund you? Everything was fine right up until you left.

Sometimes shit happens. I doubt the hot water went out because they were lazy or negligent, and it sounds like they had it fixed pretty quickly.

You could have had a quick sink wash if you were that worried about smelling. If you can stand to wash your hair in cold water then you can stand to do that!

MissMoneyFairy · 28/01/2026 12:53

If it was just off for a few hours before checkout which is usually 11am latest could you not have waited till you got home and just had a sink wash. What time did you get up.

It amazes me what low levels of service people are willing to accept. Would you book a hotel with no hot water?

We have no idea why OP was staying in a hotel, she may have had an important client meeting she want to be presentable at. She might of had a medical appointment and knew that a doctor was going to be in close proximity. She might have been about to board a 10 hour flight.

Don’t assume she was checking out and going straight home.

She wanted a service that included hot water and she paid for that service. Why shouldn’t she get a partial refund?

It's not a low level of service.

If the water was off the whole time and no alternatives provided, if it was off because the hotel messed up, if they couldn't be bothered to fix it - THAT is low service.

The hot water failing on the morning of check out and which was fixed very soon after is not poor service. It is bad luck.

Totally disagree with you on this.

This happened to us recently. We stayed i a hotel & there was no hot water in the morning

We reported it & they said the maintenance person had adjusted the boiler earlier that morning which had inadvertantly affected the water.

They gave us a 50% discount on next stay and we accepted as we need to return to that place next month for an event.

I absolutely think the hotel should make amends for not providing a service that has been paid for

If you'd paid for breakfast & came down & they said oops chef's not here, or there's none left etc would you shrug & say oh well everything was fine up to then. And i can eat at home.

If there was no pillow - similar thing...

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 28/01/2026 18:01

The timing is unfortunate but they fixed it pretty quickly as I would expect so not really poor service just unlucky…

If the chef had been in an accident, then no, it's not poor service, it's bad luck. If they'd failed to hire a chef or fired one without a replacement, or they'd messed up the rota, or they'd failed to buy the food in, that's poor service.

If the pillows had all been destroyed in some kind of incident, then again that's not poor service, that's just bad luck. If they'd failed to buy enough pillows or hadn't cleaned them then yes that's poor service.

If the hot water fails because something breaks unforeseeably and is fixed in short order, that's bad luck. If it fails because they haven't paid the gas bill or they know there's an issue but don't get someone in to fix it promptly, that's poor service.

A bit of resilience when there are minor inconveniences which are no-ones fault does not go amiss. Sometimes shit happens, it doesn't mean you automatically stick your hand out for compo.

NemesisInferior · 28/01/2026 19:14

Meh, on the day of checkout? I'm not sure I'd even bother to complain.

Mama2many73 · 28/01/2026 19:29

We once stayed at premier inn to break up a longer journey. When we got up there was no hot water. At check out we were told we would be refunded the night as it was unacceptable, didnt even have to ask..
