Holidays with school age children?

AIBU to have an abroad holiday booked for May half term (the first in 4 years!!!!) and also think it would be nice to have a long weekend away somewhere in the UK during Easter?

If your kids are in school how much do you actually go away during the holidays?

DC are in reception so planing holidays this far in advance and being restricted on timings is new to us.

Well people will go away as much as they can afford and as often as suits them. We’ve been lucky to be able to afford holidays every year since the children born. So we have a week or two in the summer. And often a week at Easter. We always go in the school holidays as that is the time available. When else would we go away?

Lmnop22 · 27/01/2026 11:14

If you can afford it, you’re not taking the kids out of school and you want to go on two holidays close together rather than more spread out then absolutely go for it! Have a lovely time!

SaltySeaAir · 27/01/2026 11:54

How do you mean? What would be unreasonable? You can have as many holidays as your budget allows during the school holidays. We have 3 holidays booked this year, can't wait!

HampsterCheese90 · 27/01/2026 19:15

I guess I wondered what is normal.

Last year (pre school) we did center parcs and 3 other U.K. trips of various lengths.

This year we’ve booked our main holiday for May, we have Wales in the summer holidays and my DH couldn’t understand why we might want to book anything else 🤣

We'd generally do main holiday at either may or October half term then camping in summer, sometimes an odd long weekend if we can afford it.

Amba1998 · 27/01/2026 19:20

Abroad at Christmas, Feb, Easter and Oct half term. Uk Aug bank hol. Very fortunate but aware it’s not the norm

Timetochangenow · 27/01/2026 19:20

We go away as often as we can, what’s normal for us is not normal for friends. You do you but do build in downtime also especially with a young one, they get very tired in autumn term.

Clearinguptheclutter · 27/01/2026 19:21

we tend to do a week at Easter or May half term and a longer trip in summer plus a long weekend somewhere

we went abroad three times last year but that’s unusual. Other than pandemic times we’ve tended to go abroad once a year.

noidea69 · 27/01/2026 19:23

I'd go away every school holiday if I had the annual leave and the money to afford it.

wafflesmgee · 27/01/2026 19:26

We go away as often as possible but camping, timeshare and youth hostels to keep costs down. We normally plan out a year in advance. Normally 2/3 of half terms and half of summer/easter. We don’t over Christmas

HampsterCheese90 · 27/01/2026 19:31

@wafflesmgee I think it’s having to plan so far in advance that’s catching me out! I’m not used to it 🤣

Thanks all!

Oh God we go away whenever we can

Very lucky to have family that are spread around europe so we rarely pay for accom, except when we fancy all inclusive!

I really enjoy hols abroad with babies /pre school and school age kids, although I know many on mumsnet don't

ShakyFridge · 27/01/2026 19:35

I don't like going anywhere in the UK over Easter Weekend. Everyone is (usually mistakenly) under the impression the weather will be ok and here in the SW it's rammed. Anywhere with small villages and towns (Lakes, Cotswolds, Cornwall, Snowdonia) is packed with nowhere to park as everyone smooshes the trip into the same 4 days.

We normally go abroad for about 5 days at May half term and have a few days away during the summer. Last year we went to Wales in August for a few days. Then a theme park overnighter around Hallowe'en.

Peridoteage · 27/01/2026 19:54

We usually do a week in europe in may half term (a couple of relatives have holiday accomodation in slightly less touristy spots, we go there so only have to pay flights). Then we do 2 weeks UK early August - camping & self catered. I usually have a few more days off spread through summer holidays just at home with kids. We ski in feb half term.
