Influencers

AIBU in thinking that influencers are the absolute worst kind of people? I think we knew this when Lydia Millen was posting about going to stay in a posh hotel (the Ritz?) when her heating went out during Covid. But it seems 1000% times worse now. Maybe it’s my algorithm, maybe I’m getting old…but these out of touch people are starting to really wind me up.

I used to work for an influencer, who was AWFUL in real life but everyone loved her online. She is an inspiration to so many but truly one of the worst people I have ever met and has fucked over so many nice, normal people to get to where she is. Her influencer friends who she often collaborated with were just as awful, one was a huge advocate for mental health and truly was an awful person who belittled everyone around her.

I know they aren’t all like this. I’m just struggling with the absolute saturation of the influencer industry knowing that probably most of them are out of touch, horrible people just playing us all so they make more money and become even more awful.

Add on to this he uber rich people (multi multi millionaires and billionaires) shoving their wealth into everyone’s faces. It’s so
distasteful. No one needs that amount of money and stuff. The wealth extremes have become so much worse in the last 5 years. I just can’t stand it!

I work in fashion. The industry is now full of them and when I joined the company, I only knew her from Instagram and thought she was great. I will never work for an influencer again because my mental health was in tatters by the time I left.

You might like the outfits they put together but they're only putting those items together because they've been gifted them from the company. Or loaned them to advertise to you. Those videos are a walking advertorial.

There are ones who always talk about pieces of jewellery to go with an outfit, which are from some very specific companies, that only seemed to become well known through social media.

The whole damned idea of it all is nasty. Fake as fuck.

So what?. If it gives me ideas of how to dress my same body shape I don't care where they get the items from or who is sponsoring them. I don't get the same items as them but I do look for similar things.

I’m 45 and I couldnt either

and as for

Then it started to give them ideas. Like that it was normal to walk around neighbourhoods trying to give away 100 boxes of Lego to random strangers. Or that it was normal to walk into a an old folks' home to look for a 100 year old to test whether or not it was true that Lego is suitable for ages 3-99 years like is says on the box. Or that ordinary people can just go out and buy 50 boxes. My DC were 8 and 5 and asking why we couldn't just do the same things.

surely none of their peers or friends were doing this?

Edited

No, friends and peers were not doing this. But people on YouTube were and when you're five there's little difference.

Genevieve Turkey 🦃😆

I really like her too. But there’s a point to her. She has talents and skills in make up as well as comedy to share and they are useful / entertaining. If she wants to make money doing that then all power to her.

Personally, I can’t stand the type of influencers that I think the OP is talking about; the ones that seem to contribute nothing useful to the world and just swan around Dubai looking like over filled puffer fish 🐠

Op, you need to sort your algorithms out though. I use Insta daily and never get haunted by that type of crap because I don’t seek it out.

Ha ha! Brilliant autocorrect that I clearly didn't notice 🦃.

I agree though and those are the only kind of influencers I follow. I just don't see the rest because I don't scroll mindlessly and also my algorithm doesn't show them to me!

And if they’re talking about Lego, they know they’re talking to kids. Horrible.

You’re being really weird. I just don’t like some influencers and it seems there are a few that feel the same on this thread.

Absolutley, fortunately most people do see through this- hence tattle forums which is quite a reassuring read sometimes when you feel the world has gone mad!
I personally have deleted social media this year due to this and the constant bombardments of advertisements.
i just worry for the younger generation who are taken in by these essentially con artists

They're limited to 30 minutes a day screen time after they've done their homework. It's not-so-coincidentally about the time I'm in the kitchen preparing dinner.

Unfortunately when they're being taught at school to research their homework on YT, I'm pushing against the tide.

youalright · 26/01/2026 21:35

Change your algorithm i had to do this when all i was getting was mental health stuff and it was really triggering. Search some specific things like funny animal videos or cooking videos etc then watch them and comment on them and it will soon change over it doesn't take long.

CrikeyNumpty · 26/01/2026 22:41

Haven’t read the whole thread, this may have been suggested. You can reset the algorithm to start again. You don’t lose the people you follow. This is the instructions for IPad but you can do on phone too.

Steps to Reset Algorithm on iPad:

  1. Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap the three-line menu (hamburger icon) in the top right.
  3. Scroll down and tap Content preferences.
  4. Tap Reset suggested content.
  5. Read the information and tap Continue/Reset to confirm.

I only said this the other day, I love mindlessly scrolling and couldn’t do it without influencers!! I think fair dues to them for finding a way to make money out of telling people about something they love

auntjoy · 26/01/2026 22:54

Back in the days when blogging was a thing I used to read a few blogs. Side note, I now read substacks by a select few people and genuinely enjoy them and find them inspiring. I’d like to start one myself at some point.

However a lot of the original bloggers I followed moved over to reels/Tik Tok/instagram and essentially became influencers. I suppose even as bloggers they were influencers but i appreciated the writing element more than someone wittering on about their outfit or watching them clean their house.

Anyway what it really showed me was that these people were actually insufferable arseholes. They translated quite well in words but not in person. Many of them totally pimp out their kids privacy for cash and freebies, they are blatantly disingenuous and often annoying as fuck. I have recently (and I’m not proud of this) discovered a tattle thread about one of them and although a bit brutal at times, it has really exposed the truth behind her perfect life and motivations. She doesn’t come across well at all.

Of course you’ll get some people with genuine talent who use these platforms as a way to showcase their work and, as in all walks of life, lots of them will be good, hardworking people. But so many are talentless, boring, incredibly fake people with no scruples when it comes to lying and selling their kids privacy.

Catladywithoutacat · 26/01/2026 22:56

Just block them then you won’t see all that , these types never come up on my pages only animals do because I don’t search for them

One of the influencers I have followed because of her “story” I have found out from Tattle isn’t quite the truth all, I still watch her videos but do feel quite disappointed in her now.

I enjoy a scroll through TikTok, but as soon as I see them being paid to advertise something I stop following them.
I was following a guy who cooks, but now he’s produced an ebook and is sponsored by a rice company, so I’m out.

Pricelessadvice · 27/01/2026 07:14

They should be renamed “walking adverts”.

timeserved · 27/01/2026 07:25

AurielleBaies · 26/01/2026 18:44

I don’t, they come up on my algorithm when I’m scrolling!

What app are you on? Can you switch off or hide their content?

I do find the many professional content creators, whatever the category, intolerable; mainly for the increasing extremes and attention seeking behaviours.
look at what I eat as a fatty, steroid use/abuse, trying to annoy random members of public until they punch you, showing off your lifestyle of leisure, fitness and gourmet dining (which starts with getting up at 4:30 and an ice bath).

Same. I wonder if it’s the same one 😂

CrikeyNumpty · 27/01/2026 12:00

They all copy each other. If someone has an original idea (rare these days), the rest copy. Hence the same language, the same germ of an idea, the same gestures (The tapping on a product/the cutesy wringing of their nose/waggling fingers).

I think at some point in the future historians will look at all this content in disbelief. Not only it is shallow, narcissistic and pointless- it’s incredibly boring. Surely people are dropping away, or know that they are modern day Tupperware salespeople. The people that truly believe that Stacey Solomon loves her subscribers to the moon and back should have their vote taken away. Using SS has an example, there are others far worse. But she has really leant in to I am one of you but has recently gone hard sell (Amazon) in a really hard faced way utilising her beloved girl next door persona when she is a hard nosed businesswoman. Fair enough if you know the deal and you are okay with it. Others are less discerning and spending money to pay for Stacey to get a beehive or whatever her latest thing is.
