Or will it be too awkward?

OP posts:
TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 26/01/2026 00:44

Why would it be awkward?
He's a doctor and he'll know all about periods.

Or are you embarrassed?

OneHundredDays · 26/01/2026 00:46

Why on earth would it be awkward?

RobertaFirmino · 26/01/2026 01:24

There's nothing to feel embarrassed about at all. Women have periods. It is a fact of life and one your psychiatrist will have learnt all about at medical school. I hope your forthcoming appointment is useful.

PollyBell · 26/01/2026 01:26

I presume he knows they exist

Wot23 · 26/01/2026 01:31

this is the year 2026 not 1826.

FrodoBiggins · 26/01/2026 01:32

Gosh OP i have mentioned periods to my male accountant! No issue at all, say what you need to. Although if you feel this uncomfortable with your psychiatrist I wonder if you have a good therapeutic relationship?

ThePure · 26/01/2026 01:35

It’s in fact important that you do. Antipsychotics can cause irregular or absent periods as well as other embarrassing stuff like lactation. He would need to know if it’s that.

steff13 · 26/01/2026 01:35

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. Why would it be awkward?

dizzydizzydizzy · 26/01/2026 01:44

If they need to know, tell them. Mine did.

semideponent · 26/01/2026 02:53

Yes, Please do. It's so matter of fact.

zebrazoop · 26/01/2026 04:41

Hormones can have a massive impact on MH, it’s important to share

Zanatdy · 26/01/2026 04:46

Of course you can. My teen DD has had lots of problems with her periods and we have had to talk to male and female doctors. She talks to her dad about it too. It’s good as I was so embarrassed to talk about periods with my mum, and never ever mentioned them to my dad, so pleased my DD can talk to male docs. Do go ahead and share what you need to, they absolutely will not be embarrassed.

snowdaze76 · 26/01/2026 05:49

It won't be awkward at all. I now have a female psychiatrist but when I had males (and I have had a lot) often the perimenopause would come up in conversation. Don't underestimate how menstruation can affect mental health. Good luck with your appointment.

Iizzyb · 26/01/2026 05:54

Hormones can have an enormous impact on mental health. I heard someone speak at a hormones & health event a couple of weeks ago -literally his dm had been severely ill since age 17 & had been treated with all sorts of mh treatments. A new woman entirely on hrt.

Mkjk · 26/01/2026 07:06

It's very important that you do, many psychiatric medications can affect periods.

InOverMyHead84 · 26/01/2026 07:08

He's male, not ignorant.

Periods are on the GCSE science curriculum... So on theory everyone who leaves school should know about them.

He's a professional.

KillTheTurkey · 26/01/2026 07:10

He’s a medical doctor, he’ll have seen a lot worse than periods in training.

Sausagedog101 · 26/01/2026 07:13

I was talking to my psychiatrist about the fact I still leak breast milk the other day 😅

Sausagedog101 · 26/01/2026 07:13

Forgot to add, he's male!
