This curtain appears to have opened itself. The amount of time a day I pull it back over and then it’s like this again, I was blaming it on my toddlers but last night once they was in bed I noticed it like this, yet again, thought bloody kids ! And closed it. I’ve come down this morning to it open again 😬😬 we’ve not long moved in to this house, and now I’m worrying something scary is going on 🤣😭

Logical explanation please ?!

The pole is slightly off the level?

newornotnew · 25/01/2026 06:49

The pole is possibly slightly sloped, or the fabric is wanting to shuffle into a different space, or air movement.

You could straighten the pole, wash/iron the fabric or check for drafts.

There's a scientific cause.

ThatWildMintSloth · 25/01/2026 06:51

It looks like a net curtain wire? Then with those huge metal holes I think its just sliding open I think as it could be quite slippy.

RedTagAlan · 25/01/2026 06:52

That pole is near enough a zip slide for action men.

PersephoneParlormaid · 25/01/2026 06:53

It’s on a wire instead of a pole so the heavier end is sliding to the middle

ForLoveNotMoney · 25/01/2026 06:53

It’s because it’s on a wire. It’s falling to the middle with the weight of the curtain. Nothing to worry about.

pandowo · 25/01/2026 07:12

Thank you! It does sound like the most sensible explanation. The curtain feels pretty stable when it’s pulled across though, and I’ve sat and watched it for 5 mins and it doesn’t appear to be even slightly moving. But I’m going to tell myself it’s the wire 😆

Get a pole. And get someone with a spirit level to put it up for you so it isn't sloped.

Barrellturn · 25/01/2026 07:15

You've installed it 'on the piss' as my fil likes to say

PleasingDistance · 25/01/2026 07:15

Is there a drawer above the cupboard on the other side which catches and pushes it

Nannyfannybanny · 25/01/2026 07:18

It's a heavy curtain with metal eyelets, hanging on a thin net curtain wire, which you can clearly see sags in the middle.

Thanks all. This has reassured me. I’m guessing it’s happening slowly as it seems pretty tight once it’s pulled across. We’re getting a new kitchen when we can afford it so I won’t have the anxiety of this curtain and have an actual door !

As per PPs the sag in the middle is very obvious and there is more evidence for the existence of gravity than ghosts. Is it just the photo and not that obvious in real life?

shellyleppard · 25/01/2026 08:11

The curtain wire isn't strong enough. Could you use a small tension rod instead?

pandowo · 25/01/2026 08:42

Is that one of those small poles ?

shellyleppard · 25/01/2026 08:47

@pandowo yes, sorry I don't have a link. Another option is half a toilet roll tube between the curtain rings? It should help the spacing and might stay up better.

ThePerfectWeekend · 25/01/2026 12:43

Why have you got them on a net curtain wire? They're designed to slide on a (level) pole.

rainbowunicorn · 25/01/2026 12:47

Why not just take the curtain down and leave the cupboard with the pans in as just shelves and no curtain. It would look better than curtain trailing along the floor.

Seeline · 25/01/2026 13:15

Logical explanation - gravity
Solution - a level pole

Just moved in, wire was already there so just a quick fix.

Two toddlers constantly pulling the pans out. Not a big kitchen so nowhere else to put them

I can beat this! We were in bed one night, curtains opened,we freaked out! It was one of our dogs, walking by the bed pushing the curtains, which were long, and with metal eyelets like yours and a metal pole.
