Cold hotel shower - what to expect

WhatToAskForNow · 25/01/2026 00:01

Staying in a hotel, shower was cold last night when room mate went for a shower. Room mate contacted reception and they said they'd try to get maintenance to check it out at some stage today.

They offered an empty room that I could use this morning to get a shower. Normally I'd roll out of bed and straight into the shower, but this morning my only option was to get up and get dressed, pack up my stuff and go to another room on a different floor (looking like I'd been dragged through a hedge).

They have since moved us to a different room, so that's good, but I'm not happy to pay full price for (1) one of us got a cold shower and (2) having to get dressed and go to another room for a shower.

AIBU to expect a reduction when I check out? What do you reckon I should expect / ask for?

A grip?

Icouldwriteabookonmydisastrouslife · 25/01/2026 00:02

How much is the bill before you asking for a partial refund ?

Edited

£252 bed and breakfast for 2 nights, 2 people.

We had similar but the shower was so hot we couldn't use it, we had a refund of £45 off a £160 bill.

StrangerThingsHappenRoundTheTwist · 25/01/2026 00:31

You could have just not had a shower for one day?

Pryceosh1987 · 25/01/2026 01:09

I think a reduction sounds plausible.

RawBloomers · 25/01/2026 01:11

I think a reduction should be expected. I’d ask 50.

What a ridiculous comment.

rwalker · 25/01/2026 06:21

10%
but wouldn’t be upset if I didn’t get anything
£252 for 2 for 2 nights including breakfast
that £126 per night take off breakfast that’s £50 each per night so you are at the lower by end of things

tbh you were there for 2 nights so wouldn’t have much can’t imagine it being a big drama to move
there was an issue they sorted it

Stupid comment

Doggymummar · 25/01/2026 08:39

They rectified the situation so I wouldn't expect anything.

SilverSurreal · 25/01/2026 08:40

Im seconding the grip comment here. Surely pj's are fine, and no one in a hotel cares how you look.

Yes its annoying.

mydogisanidiott · 25/01/2026 08:46

It’s just one of those things and yes it annoying but i’d probably expect a room upgrade and a few drinks vouchers or a free breakfast (but that is already included) maybe a bottle of something? Spa access?

Bitzee · 25/01/2026 08:47

You paid for a room with a shower and didn’t get it so I would definitely expect a partial refund. 50% of the first night’s rate would be what I’d ask for since the bathroom really is half of what you were paying for.

99pwithaflake · 25/01/2026 08:49

I would expect a refund for the first night’s stay. You paid for a room with a working shower and didn’t get it.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 25/01/2026 08:51

I wouldn't expect a reduction. They offered both an alternative shower and then another room. You're being a bit ridiculous.

AlwaysAFaithful · 25/01/2026 08:52

I would be pissed off about a cold shower and think it is reasonable to expect some money off. I would go to the reception desk at about 10 am when everybody else is checking out. That way we want to deal with things quickly without anyone hearing about the problems that you’ve been having. If you just stay very calm and describe that you’re not happy about paying full price for a room with no working shower, being expected to walk down a corridor to have a shower in a different room, that it has taken away some of the enjoyment of being away, etc. Highlight the part of reason that you go away to a hotel is to know that you don’t have to worry about these things.

MammaBear1 · 25/01/2026 08:53

I would definitely expect some sort of goodwill gesture. You’ve both been inconvenienced and didn’t get all of the services you’ve paid for.
I think I’d be proactive and ask at reception for a reduction in the first night’s charge. 30% sounds fair to me along with maybe some complimentary drinks.
They have rectified it, yes, but it wasn’t the relaxing stay you’ve paid for.

how is it ridiculous?

One day without a shower isn't going to kill anyone, you aren't going to stink

If the shower in another room was an unsuitable solution then you pass for one day

Your comment is ridiculous because of course she could go without a shower for the day. That isn't the issue.

OP is asking what's reasonable in terms of payment for a room in a hotel without hot water. Not whether or not she have a shower if she has to put up with cold water or walk down the hall. She's already navigated that part of her day.

Anewuser · 25/01/2026 09:04

Maybe people stay at hotels so regularly that they think it’s ok to have a cold shower/non working shower or no shower. When I used to go away, it was part of the enjoyment to have a leisurely shower without interruptions, from bed to shower naked. I would not have been pleased to dress and go elsewhere to wash.

OP, I would expect £50 to be knocked off the final bill. They should have given you and upgraded room when it was first pointed out to them, and apologised.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 25/01/2026 08:51

You have very low expectations of a hotel stay.

ThrowingDi · 25/01/2026 09:08

I had this before got nothing cause it was a company booking so my expectations are low

Pineapplewaves · 25/01/2026 09:17

I’m assuming they couldn’t move you to a new room straight away because they had to wait for someone to leave and then the cleaner to go in and clean it? And the empty room wasn’t the right size for the two you so you couldn’t move in to that one?

I would have gone up to the other room in my pyjamas and taken my clothes for the day with me.

A refund of the accommodation element of the first night would be reasonable so £126.00 minus the cost of breakfast, so around £90.00.

ParmaVioletTea · 25/01/2026 09:59

I'd expect some sort of discount for the day that the shower wasn't working, and for the inconvenience and time taken in moving rooms etc.

At home, I'd suck it up, but in a hotel you're paying for not having to worry about normal domestic things.
