If you had been Stephen.... (Traitors spoilers)

It's a Traitors one sorry! I know this has probably been discussed elsewhere.

Would you have taken all the money when you had the chance at the end (by voting with Jack to banish Rachel)? A few people have told me they would have and I'm now looking at them in a different way (lightheartedly)!

I wouldn't have but part of it is I would never have been able to face Rachel or Jack afterwards and that wouldn't be worth 50k to me.

YABU- He should have taken the money, 50k is alot and its a game about lying.

YANBU- No he made a promise. It was good he kept his integrity.

Honour among thieves.

CraftyMintHedgehog · 25/01/2026 15:02

The gameshow bit is the not getting caught as a traitor. So lying and deceiving is part of that. Team Traitor vs Team Faithful.

The traitors had already won at the end.

The end part was different. Stephen had promised he wouldn't write Rachel's name on the board and he didn't. He kept his word which makes him an amazing person.

If he had voted her off and taken her share then I'm not sure that would have worked morally for him, not to mention he wouldn't have been very popular afterwards.

I think he felt that Rachel had earned her share and a promise was a promise.

I would have shared. But that's the sort of person I am.

Samanthajane5 · 25/01/2026 15:02

Its not just about being selfless. Giving the money to her is him also being selfish, as he now looks great and will be featured in more magazines. Magazines pay a lot of money. Kerry Katona said that she used to get 100,000 for an OK magazine feature!

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 25/01/2026 15:12

I love the fact they kept their word. They didn’t have to make that promise to each other so it was a great end that they stuck to it.

I think if he had double crossed her it would have been even worse than the Harry/ Mollie drama - the whole point of the game is to convince the faithful you are NOT a traitor so Harry’s back was against the wall there. He couldn’t do anything else and it doesn’t mean he was lacking in integrity for winning the game. Stephen had already won the game by the point where it was down to Jack, Stephen and Rachel - it was just a question about how much he was going to walk away with.

(I actually wouldn’t have judged him negatively in any true sense for fucking her over though! The drama, I just love it Mick!)

He’s probably already quite well off as a cyber security consultant although it sounds like he came from humble beginnings. I read that some of his outfits were quite expensive, as were the designer knitwear that Jade and Rachel wore.

Namingbaba · 25/01/2026 16:15

I'm not sure I agree that Rachel would have been more ruthless. She didn't vote for Hugo when lots had suspicions on him and it felt like he was favourite to go, whereas Stephen did.

Jade and Rachel both wore ~£400 cardigans from the same place. I wonder if they came from the wardrobe department or something (although that seems unlikely, given the cost), it’s just quite a coincidence. I mean, it’s not like they both bought expensive jumpers from John Lewis. It’s a more niche shop selling hand made knits. It’s not mass produced.

Right after posting this I read that they are given clothes that brands lend the show.

DollyTots · 25/01/2026 16:43

I can’t understand why it’s okay to hoodwink a faithful but not a traitor? Why does he have more integrity for not taking the £95k from Rachel but for all the other faithfuls that’s fair game. I wouldn’t have thought any less of him for taking it all.

Because, if you're a traitor, then deceiving faithfuls into thinking that you're also a traitor, is part of the game and everybody playing knows that traitors will lie about their status.

Being deceptive to Rachel is morally different because they had made pact so he would be going back on his word. They both behaved ethically by sticking together and having each other's backs.

Because that’s the point of the game, to hoodwink the faithfuls. If the traitors didn’t do that, it’d be over by the first day.

Traitors can and do betray each other. I think what was different with Rachel and Stephen is that they promised to never write each other’s name on the chalk board and they stuck to that the whole way through. Stephen voted for both Hugo and Fiona, even though they were both traitors. There’s no obligation to win as a team of traitors - and most don’t. This was a bit different because they made the pact and stuck to it throughout the game.

Thank you, at last some common sense. Someone upthread implied that because he is religious, God would think it OK to deceive all the faithful but not Rachel. 😂

It's not a question of common sense; it's a question of different moral values.

It's perfectly ok to disagree with each other but saying that it's "common sense" to deceive Rachel implies that those of us who hope we wouldn't deceive her if faced with that temptation, are being stupid.

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 25/01/2026 16:55

I wouldn’t have made that promise to Rachel in the first place. She was very cutthroat and would absolutely not have honoured it herself. Anyone else and I would have kept it but with Rachel it was tissue thin.

Yep, it's stupid to try to apply moral values you hold in everyday life to behaviour in a game show.

The BBC article on the Traitors fashion says this and I quote:

Contestants on The Traitors bring in their own clothes and style their outfits themselves

ConnieHeart · 25/01/2026 17:03

Absolutely no way would i have gone against Rachel. After all, I'd realise that she carried me to the final & i knew she'd never do it to me

I believe Rachel helped him get to the final

WallaceinAnderland · 25/01/2026 17:06

I would have loved to have taken all the money and I wouldn't really care what the other cast members thought about it.

BUT... social media is bastard and you know you run the risk of being Britains most hated or something. Just look at what happened to 'nasty' Nick!

I think it's a shame that you think moral integrity is only important in certain situations but I suppose everyone has different values and standards. I don't think that there's anything stupid in sticking to an agreement and supporting someone who has supported you, even in a game show.

He made it much easier for him to grow in fame on social media or within the BBC - Mina is regularly on Radio 1 etc and doing other hosting gigs so Stephen was wise to share

I wonder how much that affects various players’ behaviour. I’d quite like to go on the traitors, but have absolutely zero interest in growing my social media following (which is currently non existent since I don’t have instagram) or getting any work after that. So maybe I’d act differently.

I still wouldn’t want to be hated by the whole internet though!

Because he can never win with a faithful due to the parameters of the game but he could win with a traitor who has had his back alot.

Exactly. Good sportsmanship is a huge value in our society and I'd definitely judge someone who didn't show it. Particularly when there is real life money at stake.

Even if someone isn't on social media and doesn't read tabloids, you still have to look your friends, family and colleagues in the face.

I wouldn't want to be hated on the internet but could go offline until things had died down. What I would find more difficult, is people that I care about thinking less of me - and that's apart from the fact that if I didn't act with integrity, I'd be disappointed in myself.
