To love my mother in law after this

So me and my partner went shopping tonight to our local shopping centre. Now to explain things I’ve been losing my hair since the summer through illness and stress so I’ve been trying various wigs in colours and styles but no one knows other than him .

anyway we’re shopping and I nipped into a shop and he waited outside. I come outside to him mid argument with someone. It’s his mum and she’s had a go at him thinking he was with another woman as she had seen us walking about. My heart dropped but in that moment I knew I was family to her and I felt bad for not saying about the wigs.

Wtf

You seem happy about his own mother immediately assumed her son was having an affair.

Does that not tell you something @BeeHive909 ?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 24/01/2026 18:44

Did you pop out and show her it was you? It’s a bit shit for him that his own mum automatically assumed he was having an affair, nice for you though I guess

Chickenhorse · 24/01/2026 18:44

Ahh that’s lovely that is a first class mother-in-law you have there.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 24/01/2026 18:45

It makes a change from the mothers who believe their useless idiot sons can do no wrong!

yanbu and best of luck with your hair and health journey xx

Well we don’t know what she saw. Maybe she saw them holding hands, or with his arm round her.

They were probably seen walking around holding hands and OP was wearing a wig.
The only thing it tells you is that her MIL knows men (or women), do have affairs.

Okayfenokay · 24/01/2026 18:47

"mid argument" is strange. MIL and her son were arguing about something that didn't happen instead of him explaining something that did happen.

Sounds a bit feral.

It’s because we were walking around either hand in hand or arm in arm . And yes I’m happy about it because it’s nice that she’d have my back if he were to cheat which I know he wouldn’t.

Yeah I walked out and she saw it was me straight away luckily and gave me a hug.

So how did they end up arguing about it?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 24/01/2026 18:53

Because the wig I was wearing was different to my natural hair colour so she didn’t believe him and apparently didn’t give him the chance to say it was me. She’s been cheated on before so thought he was automatically.

So she confronted him
he denied it and said it was you
she insisted it was another woman
and they argued about it until you walked out

Yeah she’s still a bit shit. I’d be a bit annoyed if I was him. Hopefully she apologised

Caughtletren · 24/01/2026 18:59

It says something that she automatically assumed it was an affair and didn’t believe him when he said it was you

Her past sadly. But luckily she’s married to an amazing man now and has a son who I know would never cheat on me. Just feel guilty about the wig thing .

Why do you guilty about not telling your in-laws you wear a wig?

Shame she doesn’t know it.

There’s nothing to feel guilty on the wig thing though.

FrodoBiggins · 24/01/2026 19:11

Did everyone applaud?

Caughtletren · 24/01/2026 19:16

Surely this would have gone

mum: hi son, who are you waiting for?
son: @BeeHive909

GlobalSpinNumpty · 24/01/2026 19:22

My DiL changes her hair frequently. She still looks like herself though - same clothes, build, gait, face, style.

What a very strange assumption for your MiL to make and argue with her own son about, and for you to ‘love her’ for. Hmm

IAmAHomewardBounder · 24/01/2026 19:43

Aw, I bet that made you feel all cozy inside 😊 It's nice to know when you're truly part of a family.

If I saw someone holding someone’s hand and being obviously more than friends with them then I’d jump to conclusions too!

She showed loyalty to her dil. Why do you have to be so nasty and sow doubt

Tutorpuzzle · 24/01/2026 19:51

Blimey, you’re getting some weird posts on this thread!

Maybe a MIL who sticks up for (and is loved by) a DIL is just not acceptable in Mumsnet world.

She sounds great 🤣.

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 24/01/2026 19:54

Yeah sorry OP; you got ‘weird Saturday overthinking mumsnet’ this evening.
Lovely to know your mil has your back!
