How much effort do you put into DC’s and DH’s birthdays?

We have a few DC primary school/pre-school age. Whenever it’s their birthdays, I always have a cake made (as I can’t bake!), get them a balloon stack/a helium balloon, put up some banners, blow some balloons up, birthday badge etc. Everything usually goes with a theme of something that they’re into at the time.
And I do the same for DHs birthday too (more for the kids benefit than his - they enjoy doing all of this).

DC’s get a class birthday party plus a family birthday tea at the house.

Dh always rolls his eyes slightly at all of this (although he’s never said anything). He comes from a family where you’d be lucky to even get a birthday card so thinks I’m OTT with this sort of stuff. I’ve explained that this is completely normal before, but he still thinks I’m OTT!

Pretty common approach I would say.

We do the same at home and everybody I know does that too. It’s not a huge effort to spend a few quid on cake and decorations to make your child feel special for the day. It’s usually men finding it over the top because they can’t be bothered.

Always bake them a cake and I have a lovely happy birthday fabric bunting I put up because balloons are pretty shit for the planet. We do whatever the birthday person wants on their birthday. They choose the meals and this usually involves an evening meal out too and they choose a nice place to go.

When mine were little I used to buy a cake, helium balloon, badge, banner, presents and have a birthday hat the birthday person had to wear when blowing out the candles. I didn’t do whole class party but they chose their closest friends and we did something like cinema and burger or make up party. Grandparents came round on the day and we would do a little tea and make a fuss. For myself and husband. Cake, with the hat and a little birthday tea and presents.
