Colleague stole my mug

Would you take someone else’s mug in the office?!! I had to rescue my mug from someone’s desk which was half filled with cold coffee yesterday and I think it’s really rude to just take someone’s mug without even asking, especially as there are plenty of other mugs they could use. The colleague didn’t even wash it up and didn’t apologise. The mug was a present from my husband. AIBU?

I would not take in a precious mug TBH.It could get dropped in the washing up, chipped being in a cupboard .Get a cheapie from Asda or SB. Much less hassle!

PepsiBook · 23/01/2026 09:57

I've accidentally used a mug I didn't know belonged to someone. I was so embarrassed when the person told me off. It took was in the dishwasher, like the rest, so I didn't know. Was quite new to the company.

AudreyHepburnseyes · 23/01/2026 09:58

Sounds like a storm in a teacup.

Monty34 · 23/01/2026 10:06

Communal mugs ? Some were unowned and for visitors. Otherwise everyone had their mug which only they used.

Maybe the thing is to have a mug that no one would want to be seen dead drinking out of. Like one with Young Conservatives on it, or a picture of Donald Trump.

Maybe one of these? If anybody asks, tell them that it was a precious possession of your beloved deceased Great Aunt, Ursula Nancy Thompson.

She took it out of the dishwasher. Everyone knows at our workplace to only use your own mug though or one of the communal mugs and everyone knows which mugs are the communal mugs as they are company branded (and often chipped too and often stained as people don’t look after them well!!).

was the person new to the system?

Bottomofthedeepbluesea · 23/01/2026 10:32

I kind of get it because I too have my own mug at work, and would not love it if people used it knowing it was mine. BUT, my mug is just a cheap mug from the supermarket (because it's the right size/shape with a good handle - I'm precious). I would not bring a mug that meant something special to me, as yours appears to, and then leave it in the communal areas. If you simply must have that mug at work, just wash it and keep it at your desk or whatever.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 23/01/2026 10:34

How on earth do 47% of people think this is a reasonable reaction? It's a fucking mug.

HisNotHes · 23/01/2026 10:34

Yanbu I’d be annoyed too, in fact it happens fairly frequently at my work as it’s not obvious which mugs are communal - the person at your workplace doesn’t have that excuse.

Do you work in an office? Perfectly reasonable to be annoyed if someone takes your personal mug in the full knowledge that it belongs to someone else when there are communal mugs available to use. It’s rude.

Evaporateandlisten · 23/01/2026 10:37

You can use mine @NewtMumLife

Sartre · 23/01/2026 10:37

Keep it on your desk, not in the communal cupboard.

Angrybird76 · 23/01/2026 10:38

YABU. It was in the dishwasher. I hate people using my mug, even at home! I am a bit weird like that. I never put my mug in the dishwasher, i wash it up and keep it in my office. Other people dont mind so i ensure that i keep my mugs close!

Obviously everyone doesn't know. They don't know.

If it's that big a deal for you, keep it on your desk, wash it by hand at the end of the day and take it back to your desk.

Better still, the it home and buy four white mugs for a pound in B&M and take those in, or ask facilities for more logo'd mugs.

I used to work with someone who liked my pretty little mug, which had been a present from my friend, she stole it time and time again. The mug was exactly the right size for a herbal tea which is what I drank at the time. The mug thief had a small cloakroom attached to their office, and I learnt from the cleaner that that was where my mug was hidden. Luckily the cleaner and I were on good terms so she used to rescue my mug when she spotted it.

The thief had form, she put my box of herbal tea bags on the refreshment tray in the room set aside for the Ofsted inspectors and that was an embarrassing conversation “ Hello, I’m Viques, I would like my tea bags back please.”

Some people are light fingered by nature.

This. And in my experience mug thieves are not very good at mug hygiene, even if there is a dishwasher available, they will in load a mug filled with dried on tea grime that doesn’t get washed out properly and don’t care that a residue is left.

CautiousLurker2 · 23/01/2026 10:45

They didn’t STEAL your mug - they used it. If you don’t want it used, store it in a locker, desk drawer or take it home.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 23/01/2026 10:48

My boss before I retired had form. We all had a cupboard where we could store mugs, plates, tea, coffee etc and two shared fridges. He frequently went through the cupboards, 'borrowing ' items. Mugs were often found in his room with mould growing. He would nick teabags and biscuits and take people's milk from the fridge. He thought he was funny and a lad. We did not

Unfathomable. I can’t understand why people are so cheap…buy your own mug if you like it so much, why take it from your colleague?!

Use/steal - whatever word you use the facts are the same, they took it to drink out of when they knew it belonged to someone else.

People shouldn’t have to lock their mugs away, others should just respect the fact that it’s not their mug to use and there are company mugs available or they can bring in their own.

pontipinemum · 23/01/2026 10:51

If it is well known in your office place that you don't use other people mugs I'd be annoyed.

Anywhere I have worked though if you had your own special mug it only ever lived on your desk. I'd handwash mine and put it back.
