Funny taste before I fainted

Last week whilst I was at work, totally out of the blue, I fainted. Just before I fainted, I remember thinking my mouth tasted strange and then I blacked out.

It took me a while to come round and I didn't feel right for the rest of the day. I attended a walk in, I was checked over everything seems fine, sugars, bloods, BP, ecg ect.

Today it almost happened again, I laid on the floor and my work colleagues put my legs up. It sort of passed, I came home and, had a sleep and some dinner and feel a bit better but still a bit light headed.

I dont smoke, drink, I am caffeine free, I havent started any new medications I'm not pregnant, other wise pretty fit and healthy in my late 30's, eating and drinking well.

My sleep isn't great, usual life stress, I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever had the same thing. My GP has booked me in for another blood test as I phoned today, and urine test tomorrow. I'm starting to worry a little when im on my own its going to happen or when driving or something.

Diabetes can cause taste changes when blood sugars go high.

Pregnant ?

Reallyoldperson · 22/01/2026 22:01

She’s had blood tests and she’s not pregnant.

violetcuriosity · 22/01/2026 22:05

Possibly a seizure, they can have an aura which can include tastes and smells.

TeenYearsAreBrutal · 22/01/2026 22:05

Potentially some kind of seizure?

AgentPidge · 22/01/2026 22:07

I went through a period when I fainted three times over a couple of weeks. This was some years ago, and I never got to the bottom of it.
The only thing different was at the time there was very deep snow. It was hard work walking to work and some people couldn't get in, so I had to take on more work. So, a stressful situation. That's all that was different.

SillyQuail · 22/01/2026 22:07

Low iron/ferritin? It can cause a strange taste in your mouth and fainting. I've also fainted a few times due to low blood pressure in the morning, especially if I've slept badly.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 22/01/2026 22:09

You say your sleep isn't great, how bad is it compared to normal? I have fairly low blood pressure and I get very faint when I'm tired, ill or hormonal.

What happened just before you fainted, had you stood up or anything?

Lastly you say you exercise well and eat well, is there a possibility you hadn't eaten or drank enough? When you're awake you burn more calories.

Yes it could be something else but best to rule out the easy / obvious first

justasking111 · 22/01/2026 22:10

Blood tests hopefully will provide answers.

Musicaltheatremum · 22/01/2026 22:43

Seizure was the first thing that came to mind here too with the taste change as a prodrome. I'd be referring to neurology/first seizure clinic for completeness.
You should stop driving meantime if you do drive.
Get witnesses to say exactly what happened...colour change, shaking, twitching and write it all down.
History is really important in helping to diagnose these funny turns

I used to faint all the time at one point almost daily on my busy commute because I could never get a seat. Sometimes my mouth would fill with saliva and sometimes there was like a metal type taste and it happened if I’d been standing too long. It was always due to low iron and b12. try a multi vitamin or if you already take one try an iron supplement. Eating healthily doesn’t necessarily mean you’re eating enough iron rich foods. I wouldn’t worry yourself and jump straight to worst case scenario sometimes our bodies just need a little top up.

annmarie6 · 22/01/2026 23:39

It could be a seizure.
This is similar to what I have. I have awareness seizures and you get a funny taste, an odd smell, I get a feeling of ‘doom’ and they make me exhausted after. Also struggle to concentrate after and just generally feel weird.

I have also had ones where I blacked out but remained in the same position I was in.

I would bring this up in your appointment as it may be a possibility.

Connachtfive · 22/01/2026 23:43

Seek a GP consultation. If further medical investigations are required your GP will sort it out. Speculation will only cause you more anxiety x

Bibbitybobbity70 · 22/01/2026 23:46

Seizures?
Dh has epilepsy from teens & is able to sense them coming- taste, visual changes. He says also extreme tiredness before & after...feeling of doom/darkness

So I had blood test still waiting, urine showed potenial infection. Today I felt awful again, we went out and I needed to come home and have a sleep. I had a migraine last night which I do get a couple times a year, seems alot in the last week. I also felt tearful which isn't like me at all, the taste in my mouth was for literally 5 seconds before I passed out a strange sort of sour salty taste. I just dont feel with it.

Have a look at postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and Neurocardiogenic syncope, see if the symptoms ring true to you. If so ask you GP to refer you to a cardiologist (its not a heart condition) meantime make sure you have a bottle of lucosade sport with you as this has exactly what you need to help you recover from fainting.
