To move to the Cayman Islands in my 20s?

Live in London and whilst I love the city, my job means I have zero free time. I pay an insane amount in tax and rent. No family money so feels I work just as hard if not harder and still getting no where.

AIBU to move to the Cayman Islands? Wouldn’t be a step up career wise, more a step sideways. With all the costs of living on an island where everything is imported, I may make less money than London. But the big difference is that I will have time to cook my own meals rather than eat office deliveroo.

I’m not naturally a big city person but do love the choice London has. AIBU?

Do it!

BlueJuniper94 · 22/01/2026 20:56

Why does it have to be the Cayman Islands?

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/01/2026 20:58

Plan for the end as well as the beginnjng. Children, ill health, retirement, unemployment etc. Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

puppyparent · 22/01/2026 20:59

I mean yeah, why not? Your 20s are the time for this kind of thing. You could save some dosh and come back to London when you get bored.

I expect the lack of tax might have something to do with it

rebax · 22/01/2026 21:01

Go for it.

There will be downsides but at least the weather will be better.

Cazzovuoi · 22/01/2026 21:02

My best friend qualified as a chef at 19 and got a job working for a billionaire in his Grand Cayman home. She was there for 8 years and loved every minute.

Do it!

bluedancingtwiglet · 22/01/2026 21:04

Do it - you might meet a very wealthy partner 😂

Needmorelego · 22/01/2026 21:07

I'm not actually sure where the Cayman Islands are 😂
What would you do there? Do you need a visa? Couldn't you just move somewhere else in the UK?
Edit : I googled them.
They're tiny. If you like London life I think you might be a bit bored there 😂

starrylightts · 22/01/2026 21:21

No brainer for me, but i hate London. I've been to Grand Cayman and it's really beautiful. I wouldn't want to be there forever but I think you could have a great time there in your 20's.

I thought people just kept their money there, I didn't realise they actually lived there

Why did she leave out of interest?

Cazzovuoi · 22/01/2026 21:46

@BlueJuniper94 she eventually got bored because he stayed in the house less and less. He was based in the USA. The last year she worked there she saw him once for a long weekend.

She was basically stuck in the empty house catering for the staff who kept the house up while he wasn’t there. Incredible waste of money!

Can anyone just rock up to the Cayman Islands and say what - Cool, I live here now? Is it that easy?

SunnyPlace345 · 22/01/2026 21:51

NC for this. I've lived in Cayman for 5 years, moved in January 2021. I'm a lawyer. It's a wonderful place to live as a professional couple with a young family. I would caution against moving here if you're single. It's really not that big of a party place, most people are early 30s and with a wife/girlfriend. All my single friends have left after 2-3 years as it's just impossible to meet anyone.

It's also become incredibly expensive to live. If you think London is expensive, you'll change your mind when you're paying £15 for a pot of yogurt. So whatever you do, I hope you get paid well.

Feel free to PM me.

If you're a lawyer or an accountant, the work permit is easy and they are very in demand jobs.

CotswoldsCamilla · 22/01/2026 22:57

I have a lot of Hedge Fund clients based there. They’re all typically in their 30s and 40s. The 20 somethings are all based in the London or New York offices.

You might be a bit bored, OP

cestlavielife · 22/01/2026 23:02

Go spend a,year there. See how it goes. You are in your 20s the decade to try things out
