To wonder why my period suddenly smells so bad?

Sorry, I know this is TMI, but hoping I can get some advice.

I wear tampons, but for security, wear period underwear to bed, as I often bleed too much for a tampon. Aware you’re probably not supposed to use tampons at night, but it’s always been fine for me.

Anyway, this morning I woke up, after having the heaviest day of my cycle, so I had definitely leaked a lot.

The really weird thing is, it smelled awful! This has never happened to me before and I’m late 30’s. I’d say it had a fishy odour. I’m so embarrassed writing this, but wondered if anyone has any suggestions as to why, or has experienced this before?

i washed as normal and have been worrying all day in case I smell, but if there is a smell now, it’s much less obvious than it was.

If anyone has experienced this, I would be so grateful to know what had caused it? Please help a very embarrassed mum.

Glad today better OP. The pants are pants! Decent pads are the most convenient and no odour. Read the other day one Net Zero recommendation is we call move over to reusable period cups (!)…

Ah my stinky pants were M&S too! Never tried another brand because they put me off.

Mine are M&S!!
Well, payday today so I'm binning them and trying another brand 😁

I used to love my cup!
Unfortunately I was one of the unlucky ladies that dragged my coil out with it. (despite using both successfully for many years) 😒 sad times.

Yay! No BV.

A fishy smell indicates bacterial vaginosis.

When I say the smelled bad, they really smelled horrific. I can’t understand how it could be that severe. My first thought was a missed tampon, but I’ve checked, and just had a double check, and I can’t feel a thing in there.

I had a godawful smell once, and went to a special clinic. After no end of rummaging, they found a mere strand from a tampon that had made its home around my cervix ~ so please be aware that just because you can't feel a tampon inside, doesn't mean a little bit couldn't be there. And after removal, the room had to be aired out before it could be used again!

Thank you. This is very helpful. I was away over the festive season last time I had my period, so machine washed them at a family members house. Maybe it’s caused by the different products?

If they used liquid detergent or fabric softener (or both) and / or a rapid wash that could well be the problem.

A fishy smell in your vag could be BV, but more likely to be your period pants from what you have said.

Strip wash will sort you out, promise.

Anyone who can manage with just pads at night for the first two days of their period must have very light periods! I also wear both tampons and pads and there's no way I'm giving up nightly tampons at the start of my period.

All this talk of lost tampons always panics me, I have OCD and am always convincing myself I forgot to take the last one out before I put a new one in. Will be avoiding period pants after this though that's for sure (not that I have any inclination to try them anyway)

If you get the right period pants with absorbency front to rear waistband they can be life changing for periods. Genuinely.

Instead of having to double up on pads or pads and tampons, just wearing comfy shorts overnight and getting a decent night's sleep without fear of leaking....I'll take that all day long!

Don't knock them until you have tried them.😊

This 100%. It's the pants, ignore the poster who said hot wash, that's absolutely the wrong thing to do as it sets proteins like blood. You need to soak in cold water then rinse under running tap, squeezing out all the blood til water runs clear. Sounds weird but you get used to it and otherwise that blood is still going to be inside the pants.

Always wash on cold and use vinegar and they work very well, I've had pairs I've had for ages and they don't stink. No fabric conditioner as that affects their absorbency and can lead to smells as well. Lots of people say period pants are disgusting and stinky because they don't care for them properly.

100% agree with this. Have used period pants for years and not had an issue.

Washing does make a difference though...rinse after wearing and avoid liquid detergent and conditioner.

Aside from that they are SO easy.

Letmeloveyou · 23/01/2026 12:51

I’d throw the pants away, wear normal cotton knickers with a sanitary pad. These things that are meant to be helpful and economical sometimes just don’t work. IMO it isn’t worth smelling bad for! For example for me I used natural deodorant and just couldn’t get on with it.. I know it’s better for our bodies etc but my armpits stank!

In my mid thirties I developed an unfortunate fish whiff...never had it before but eating any kind of fish (worse with white fish....who knows why!) i get very whiffy....I have to put a diary reminder in a few days before I am due a wax. I do also use period pants (for bladder leaks) but they get a 30 min cool wash on their own and then go in with the rest of my clothes, they def need a different wash cycle to anything else.

ps there are no real issues to using tampons at night, it's more to do with frequency of changing them.

I’d never eat fish again if this happened! Eurgh.

I don’t know what a “strip wash” is but 40 degrees is only just above body temperature - that’s not going to kill bacteria. Use cotton underwear and wash at 60. No need for anything else beyond biological washing detergent. And definitely no vile fabric conditioner.

If you wash at 60c you could damage the leakproof layer of your period pants and may as well throw them out.

A long wash with no detergent should sort them out.

I can’t answer for anyone else but for 2-3 nights of my period I have to wear a super plus tampon and a pad and I would still need to put a towel down for leaks.

Mine are awful and I go through pads regularly at night but I'd still take that over using a tampon and the risk of it being in there too long, it's a real thing and can make you extremely poorly

Firefly1987 · 23/01/2026 19:05

@HappyMeal564 I didn't know you weren't supposed to wear tampons at night I thought the advice was to just switch to pads for some of your period to give yourself a rest. Maybe I should read the instruction leaflet again lol.
