AIBU to think people need to realise the negative impact of people leaving troll "reviews" for small business' pages!!

So to give a wider context to why this has got me riled up, in the past few months, two of my friends who run small, local businesses have been targeted by people leaving troll reviews. They are both obviously fake/malicious reviews - both my friends have otherwise 4 or 5 reviews on google/tripadvisor etc, and are very well regarded locally, plus the "fake" reviews don't make any sense, talking about products/services they don't sell, for instance, and the users not having any other reviews/information on their profiles.

However, the impact of having these negative and fake reviews published on their google page has really effected them and it's been very stressful..in one case they've had to pursue it legally as the stuff written is libellous (very serious accusations of verbal abuse etc, which is absolutely not in my friends' character at all!).

I therefore feel really shocked today to see two different 'influencers' I currenlty follow, separately asking their very large followings to go and post 'troll reviews' on the business pages of people they don't like?! One of these influencers I follow is themself famous because of the business they started, so surely must appreciate how make or break reviews are, and the other you would hope would know better - it's not like they're a young kid doing something in 'revenge'. Both these influencers are aged mid to late 30s.

Do people not realise how much it effects small business owners to have things like this happen to their business? I just find it completely shocking. Obviously if a business genuinely has done something wrong or bad, you should leave a negative review or tell the truth about what has happened, but actually making things up/encouraging your 'fans' to make stuff up "just because you can" seems obscene to me!
AIBU??

Can you show us a screenshot of the message they are sending out asking people to give negative reviews?

It can. The owner has a right to reply and should do so. It can be entertaining reading low star reviews and a sharp honest response from the owner.

I don't know how to do it as it was on Instagram and I don't have mumsnet on my phone, but it's the second time one of these particular influencers has done it in as many months and I've now unfollowed them.

One of them I'm referring to is a more 'local' influencer with about 10K followers so you wouldn't necessarily know who it is, but the other one is a fairly well known person who's been in national papers, on podcasts etc.

No, I don't believe people realise that. On some platforms even 4 star review out of 5 counts as a negative review for the algorithm which then doesn't show you to perspective customers. It really makes me despair when people leave a 4 star review because " the service was great but not outstanding" or "I never leave five start review because there is always room for improvement". Alright then, why don't you tell me how I can improve in your review then so at the very least make it somewhat helpful.

Did you see the one for a surgeon and it was 4 and the title was "This guy literally saved my life" and he said "what more do I possibly need to do to get 5??"

Yes, there is a place near to us who write the most fantastic comebacks on their Facebook reviews!

Why are you being so shy about telling us who these influencers are? It won't be outing for you, and we will be able to see exactly what they are saying.

EmeraldRoulette · 22/01/2026 15:52

@Bubble678910 why are these influencers asking people to do that?

I didn't realise this was common.

So the one that most people will know of is Adam Frisby? He used to own InTheStyle, he's good friends with Charlotte Cosby/Crosby? Off Geordie Shore. For those who don't know, him and his boyfriend/husband have just had a baby via surrogate, paying a woman in the USA to carry a baby for them. Obviously people are very divided on the issue, but every time someone comments something perceived as 'negative' he sends his followers after them and finds their business pages etc to leave reviews. I can see why he is upset at someone leaving a negative comment under a post about his new baby, but if you go and rent a woman's womb you've got to expect some pushback!

The other one is too outing to say as they're very localised with their following. In fact I think they have a closed account these days.

Anyway, I didn't want to say originally as I didn't want the thread to become a whole debate on surrogacy but for further context see above.
