Large secondary school vs Small secondary school

I am in NI, my son is due to move to Secondary school this September.
We have a choice of schools to consider, the majority on the larger side.
We live in a small rural village with a very small secondary practically on our doorstep. There is roughly 250 kids in the whole school! It's not within walking distance but reasonable enough that I can do the school runs for a few years and he can then get the bus when he finds his feet. This school has had its issues over the years with inconsistent leadership and being a lazy option for locals but 'appears' to have turned a corner and is being recommended by lots of parents. One major draw back is they can't currently offer A'Levels or equivalent, due to the low numbers of pupils. He would be guaranteed a place due to the low number of applications.

The other larger schools are all at least 5-10 miles away, require 2 buses, have approx 1000 pupils in total. All have the typical issues with stories of bullying etc but are well resourced, popular schools. We have a preference of 1 of these but it is becoming increasingly popular with more applications than places.

My dilemma is, do I send him to the local small secondary, keeping him closer to home, slightly sheltered from the bigger crowds and have an easier commute every day or send him to a bigger school further away with added miles each day and a sense of the real world!
All options offer a selection of subjects and opportunities for extra curricular activities.
Any opinions welcome!

I'd be very worried about the range of subjects on offer for GCSEswith approx 50 children per year.

Edited to add... we have a similar size locally and they make them all do the same subjects!

Personally small and then he can use public transport to get o 6th form or college but I'd encourage extra curriculars outside of local school to widen circle especially if you think post 16 education is likely

Is the smaller one co-ed? If so that’s only 25 boys per year- that’s not a massive potential pool of friends and probably has implications for sport too.

I think it depends on his personality but 1000 is still quite a small secondary school.

DS who struggled with bullying in primary has gone to secondary with 1,500 kids. Its worked much better for him, helped him find his tribe and has lots of resources, GCSE options, activities etc. I don’t always think smaller is better.

The small school would worry me in terms of GCSE options offered. It's very unlikely they will have much in the way of choice with such small cohorts. It would also worry me that he would face difficulties in friendship choices, finding a like-minded tribe is very difficult when there are approximately 50 children total in your year group.

All things being equal, the larger school. More choice of friends, extra curricular and GCSE options.

However if any neurodiversity or anxiety (child not you!) Then smaller may be better.

My DC go to a much smaller rural school and I would say the cons are lack of subject choice, 1 or 2 teachers per subject (so issues if they are long term sick or leave and it takes time to recruit a replacement), fewer high achieving pupils to spur each other on, difficult re friendships, fewer like minded peers, lack of extra curriculars.

Pros are the teacher really get to know pupils, more individualised learning, good pastoral support, pupils of all ages mix well together and the advantages that come with small class sizes (some classes have 10 or fewer pupils).

Thanks for replies! A few things to consider and ask more questions about GCSE choices! Much appreciated 😊

I thought my child would be better off in a smaller secondary (not as small as the one you are considering though).

In hindsight I wish I had instead sent them to a larger school where they would have had more access to different friendship groups.
