To think the fawning over “old money” is just ridiculous

keep seeing it on the internet (Mumsnet is one such place): the insinuation that old money is more impressive and classy than new money.

im much more impressed by new money: more likely to have been earned

MidnightPatrol · 21/01/2026 18:23

I’ve not seen this anywhere tbh.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 21/01/2026 18:25

Really? How odd! I think literally the opposite - it is hard to begrudge a grafter who earned it all for themselves and hard not to be judgemental about those born with a silver spoon in their mouth!

Overtheatlantic · 21/01/2026 18:25

I don’t see this at all on the internet. Those distinctions mean nothing.

Strokethefurrywall · 21/01/2026 18:27

It’s always on MN. People muttering that nouveau riche always drive “ghastly” Range Rovers and truly wealthy people slop around in wellies driving beaten up Land Rover discoveries, with holes in their clothes.
It’s always to do with a show of wealth that MN doesn’t like, you can’t be showy if you’ve got money, it’s very déclassé 😂

RobertaFirmino · 21/01/2026 18:29

I'm not impressed by money, regardless of its age. Don't get me wrong, I won't say no to some money but it doesn't stop someone from being a tosser, does it?

Tortephant · 21/01/2026 18:30

I haven’t come across this but I do have a view on it: I think the perspective you are putting forward is biased towards the “new money” showy flashy sorts. There are plenty of people that have earned well that don’t have that approach to their lifestyles. “New and Old money” to use the phrases can both be understated, look scruffy, drive older cars and so on.

ginasevern · 21/01/2026 18:30

I've never seen it on Mumsnet. I can't imagine it's much of a thing unless you regularly move in aristocratic circles. Are you confusing the internet with Country Life magazine or Tatler perhaps!

Middletoleft · 21/01/2026 18:30

MN has a bee in it's collective bonnet about class and money and I can't understand why. Presumably there are a few with huge inferiority complexes or are incredibly insecure.

bathsmat · 21/01/2026 18:34

People on MNs are obsessed with old money being classier etc. Don’t understand why, most have obtained through dodgy means when you trace it back. For some reason that’s preferably to a footballer in designer togs.

You can’t be on MNs much!

thats a hatred of so called “chavs” and gauche flashy behaviour not hatred if new money . often someone flashing their wealth with cars and designer clothes is not wealthy just tacky and feel the need to show off

that is not the same as valuing old money verses new money , not at all

NotMeAtAll · 21/01/2026 18:36

I'm not interested in other people's money.

ViciousCurrentBun · 21/01/2026 18:38

The way people conduct themselves is what impresses me. I do think flashing money about is really more what they are meaning.

OonaStubbs · 21/01/2026 18:38

I think we should go back to old money, it was much better (and distinctive) to have pounds shillings and pence instead of the modern metric system.

pimplebum · 21/01/2026 18:44

Can you post quotes from this week where a poster has fawned over old money ? … I can’t find any

as a teacher I’d say older kids value a self made person over someone born with privilege

personally I feel the same as the kids but not judge anyone harshly for having family money as long as they acknowledged their privilege and do not pretend they had “worked hard to buy their first home “ or “ built a business up from scratch “ when it was achieved via family wealth

Yuasa · 21/01/2026 18:47

I know precisely what you mean!

Someone will start a thread about something they consider ‘posh’ or upper class and without fail a poster pops up to make it clear the op is not au fait with what is truly upper crust, and all the old money stereotypes (old bangers, dog hair, trudging about in wellies) are trotted out. The point of this is to make clear that the poster correcting the error has greater proximity to said old money than the op who is in fact talking about new money vulgarians.

There is always a sense of fawning over it. Awful.

you mean they can't have a show of wealth that us peasants understand - but they really do show off with their mansions, art, holiday homes and staff eh?

Totally agree with this. A tosser is a tosser, whether they have 1b or 1p in the bank. I take people as I find them, rather than what they have.

I’ve not seen this anywhere tbh.

Haven’t you? Seriously, read some threads about “dukes with 8 labradors who drive battered Volvos and prefer hanging out with the homeless alcoholic outside Asda than the dreaded middle classes”. Often with a side order of pro-hunting nonsense. Forelock tugging at its finest.

GreenPoms · 21/01/2026 18:58

I’ve literally never seen this on Mumsnet even once and I’ve been here a long time. I think you are mistaken

peacefulpeach · 21/01/2026 19:01

Old money or new money, we saw from the numerous private school VAT threads, that many people on MN are very bitter they don’t have as much money as either of those groups.

bathsmat · 21/01/2026 19:02

😆😆😆 I thought the derailing of threads with PE arguments had ceased!

AllJoyAndNoFun · 21/01/2026 19:03

To be fair I have seen it on MN and it tends to be based on v weird stereotypes around "old money" and how these people live - there are a lot of younger aristos who work, live in cities and dress normally (not a tweed jacket or smelly Labrador in sight). It's also ignores the upper middle classes who I suppose are a hybrid of old and new money and who have the best deal.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 21/01/2026 19:07

I don't remember seeing posts fawning over old money. I have seen many posts pointing out that class and money aren't the same thing, which is true.

No chance. It’s part of the beating heart of MN now..
