To think Brexit has undoubtedly left the Uk more vulnerable?

Listening to Trump and thinking about Mark Carney’s (Canadian PM) brilliant speech, I can’t help thinking what a mess the Uk has got itself into. Left a strong alliance willingly and now we are at the mercy of an unstable world power with very little influence. I’m glad Starmer is at the helm but the Uk is increasingly exposed, economically and militarily.

Agree completely.

As Danes and Greenlanders are discovering, 'sovereignty' on its own counts for little. You can't pay bills with it, you can't eat it, and you can't defend yourself with it, and it's literally all we gained from Brexit in exchange for making a whole bunch of things worse, including a 4% hit to GDP. It was utter madness then, and the current situation certainly isn't making it look wiser.

Well obviously. Those blue passports aren’t proving to be helpful at all are they? Single most stupid thing we have ever done as a nation.

purpleygrey · 21/01/2026 15:26

Agreed. It’s a shit show

ExtraOnions · 21/01/2026 15:28

Economically, Politically and Security wise, we are much more vulnerable. This was always the intention, why do you think the Russians were so keen to help to push Brexit through.

MissyB1 · 21/01/2026 15:29

Yep! Boris, Farage and Cameron should all be in the tower for treason, off with their bloody heads!

Alexandra2001 · 21/01/2026 15:29

Totally agree, we are on our own now & against Trump who is clearly not thinking normally... to put it politely.

Ablondiebutagoody · 21/01/2026 15:37

Having sponged off the US for the last 40 odd years, all of Europe is vulnerable militarily now that they seem to be withdrawing from NATO. It will take decades to sufficiently re-arm.

We aren’t on our own. The UK and the EU have a security and defence partnership.

And likely more than excited that a fool like Farage might gain power again.

Not on trade.
If trump removed tariffs for EU but not UK, EU wont step in.

On defence and security, the EU don't have an army & we don't even have access to their higher level criminal databases.

Not really. Most of the time Europe can't make it's mind up what to do, and when it does it is likely to be a compromise that isn't necessarily in the UKs best interests. The UK now has more options, to either side with Europe, the US, or remain neutral on political matters.

Brexit was exiting the EU anyway, which for the UK was largely a trade pact, not a military alliance.

We continue to maintain alliances with many countries that count, such as Norway on defence of the North (we have alliances/bases and equipment building pacts with them) and Italy on projects like missiles, fighter jets and helicopters.

Arlanymor · 21/01/2026 16:03

Yes it was a bloody stupid decision all around and this is one of the areas where it was always clear it was going to be the case.

EU threatening their tariffs "Bazooka" is why Trump has stepped back.... if Europe was still just a group of small countries, he'd just pick them/us one by one with huge tariffs and threats.

Even now, if he wanted too, he could slap a 30% tariff on the UK for no reason at all and we could do nothing about about, alone we have no clout.
