When I was a kid we had really good Saturday morning TV programs like Swap Shop and Saturday Superstore. Now there’s NO kids’ programmes at all on Sat mornings - instead a plethora of cookery programmes - each one with virtually the same format!

Heads up for anyone interested - October 2nd this year will be 50 year anniversary of Swap Shop and there’ll be at least 1 program on TV commemorating it

I think because of streaming services, kids can watch anything any time but I can kind of get where you are coming from. There is no general entertainment shows for kids anymore. I loved those in the 80s and 90s. - competitions, phone-ins, your favourite pop-stars being on them, little skits, the chance to go to the studio etc. They were great fun and there's really nothing like that now.

Reassurancells · 21/01/2026 10:56

But there are whole channels of kids programmes now?

Children of this generation can literally watch anything at the touch of a button. They don’t need channels to play specific shows at set times.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 21/01/2026 10:58

It's because people either watch the specific children's channels or they stream favourite programmes on repeat.

Egglio · 21/01/2026 10:58

It was because Saturday morning TV was the only way parents could get a Saturday lie in. We were 'allowed as a treat' to get up whenever we liked, have cereal from the 'Saturday box' (frosties) and switch on the TV. I thought Saturdays were amazing as a child. Now I look back and realise so did my parents Grin it was one big conspiracy I tell you!

jamandcustard · 21/01/2026 10:59

Because there are dedicated kids channels now or streaming services. I’d have though that was obvious 🫣

Yes exactly! I loved Swap Shop and Saturday Superstore but I’d lost interest by the time Going Live started - I was 14 by this point!

… I loved all the competitions - Keith Chegwin out in the various roadshow locations - and yes the pop stars of the day featuring on them.

Also - who can forget the Brown Sayce single - ‘I Wanna Be A Winner?’

Edited

Probably like in earlier times, when children were sent to church/Sunday school!

Yes but no high profile magazine type programmes like Swap Shop and Saturday Superstore - only high profile one I can think of is Peppa Pig and that’s a cartoon for preschoolers !

Is there a magazine type kids programme on streaming similar to Swap Shop, Saturday Superstore, Going Live, whatever the Ant and Dec one was called? That's what OP is talking about. It seems unlikely as they were very timely, with an interactive element which would be impossible if not live.

I think the point is not "it's impossible for children to watch TV on Sat mornings" but "I wonder why there are no longer live interactive magazine shows for kids on Saturday mornings, with competitions, guests, music , sketches etc"

Why be a dick? I've already said it up thread, if you read it.

It's about the type of programme, not just kids shows.

Um for the same reason we no longer go to Our Price to buy the latest album or go to the corner shop to get the weekly / monthly release of our favourite magazine...

Because times have changed....?

ginasevern · 21/01/2026 11:15

You are being very unreasonable. All the cool kids knew that Tiswas was the best and Swap Shop was utter crap.

Even if you don’t use iPlayer or Netflix you can still watch CBeebies or CBBC at that time just using a normal freeview TV? So there is no need anymore.

There used to be set times for particular programmes eg Sat morning kids stuff because that was literally the only chance to watch kids TV.
