5hr Wait to see a Dr with sick child - how are we at this point

IAmADancer · 19/01/2026 23:15

Just that really. Called 111 as my DD is poorly, very high temp, vomiting, lethargic, can’t put chin to her neck as it hurts. Was told she had to attend A&E.

She is currently sat on a plastic chair, looking horrendously pale and feeling so unwell. Seen the nurse and been told it’s a 5 hr wait for a dr.

Why do we accept this as the norm, it’s awful. I feel so frustrated that this is the best we can expect and that a small child who is obviously poorly is left to wait this long

No need for a big argument but @SoIMO has a point. People seem to think 'it's viral' means it's minor, but covid is viral, herpes encephalitis is viral, HIV is viral. (For clarity, I am not saying OP's daughter has any of these). Bacterial infections are not necessarily more serious.

Actually, it's irrelevant. It also didn't need post after post arguing and nitpicking with the OP when she must be feeling very fragile about her child.

Compassion at a time like this, no?

IAmADancer · 21/01/2026 13:24

I’d love to know at what point I challenged the nurses opinion when both the Dr and consultant have both said it’s bacterial. The only think I have said about the nurses in the ward is that they have been amazing.

Advocating for your child isn't bullying. HTH.

You're deliberately not acknowledging anything the OP has said that contradicts what you're saying.

IAmADancer · 21/01/2026 13:25

They have also tested her for RSV/Covid/Flu and it all came back negative. She also has blood in her urine.

She had a course of IV antibiotics yesterday and she has another round today.

Theres something seriously wrong with you. You've shown zero empathy to op and done all you can to make her feel worse than she already does. That's not normal and I suggest you seek help.

This is a bit silly, isn't it? @IAmADancer is at the hospital with her DD. The hospital team are there. They can see her DD and can see all the results. If they decide to give abx then that's on them. They can't be 'bullied' into prescribing anything.

If it's bacterial, abx will treat it. If it's viral, it won't. But bacteria multiply unchecked, which is why they give abx at the earliest opportunity because it's the lower risk strategy.

What is the point of debating the cause of infection in a child you have never met?

Are you medically trained

IAmADancer · 21/01/2026 13:31

Also what type of lunatic would feel aggrieved to know their child isn’t as ill as thought. I don’t want my child to be ill, it’s horrendous. Yesterday she asked me if she was going to die! Do you know how fucking awful a question that is to hear. I want her to be healthy and happy, not in hospital being poked and prodded and having multiple tests.

@SoIMO i thought the blood tests showed inflammation markers that indicate it is bacterial and the main viral infections have been tested and ruled out

it is absolutely ok to challenge nurses and doctors I have twice once when a midwife didn’t believe I was in labour using the phrase when you are in labour you will know and no contractions were showing (because the contraction wasn’t stopping) and again when DS had a non blanching rash both times I was right

that said even viruses lead to hospitalisation (and worse) and can need treatment and monitoring - flu and covid among them

I seriously hope you don't considering your very obvious lack of empathy and compassion.

I’ve only read some of your posts but it’s horrible having a very sick child in hospital. Thoughts and best wishes for you.
please ignore crazy posts - they don’t deserve your energy.

Ignore @SoIMO OP. They are showing themselves up. Don’t rise to their behaviour

really hope your dd is on the mend soon and they figure out the cause of the bacterial infection asap

Virus doesnt mean your child isnt as ill as you thought..

Lougle · 21/01/2026 13:38

Yeah, and I was an ITU nurse. What does it matter? People request and because they are scared and want their child to be better. It's up to the healthcare professionals dealing with the patient to determine what treatment is necessary. You aren't dealing with this patient, so you can't possibly say if @IAmADancer is being reasonable. She has told you frequently that she has been told that her DD has a bacterial infection. Why would you take it upon yourself to suggest she's confused or lying and that her DD probably has a viral condition? What does it matter to you?
