Help me work out why they are doing this?

Neighbours house has a little balcony by their back door with a bbq which has a cover on it and is not being used. Quite often when I open my living room curtains I have noticed food sitting on top of the bbq. This morning there was a plate with a chicken carcass left there. Later on in the afternoon there was a pan with food in it on there and now there is a casserole dish with food in it on there. They are NOT using the bbq to cook the food, the cover is on it. One day at the weekend there was an uncut loaf of bread left out there not in the packaging. Anyone know why they are doing this? Does anyone else randomly put food out in their garden? Am I missing something?

That is very strange.
The only thing I can think of is are they leaving it out for the fox , bread for the birds ?
Still odd though.

LouXx12 · 19/01/2026 21:43

Just to add, the balcony isnt big enough for them to sit out and eat meals out there, they dont have a table and chairs out there, so they arent eating meals out there

I was about to add are they eating out there and can't be bothered to clear up, but obviously not.

I did at first think the same, but if I was throwing bread out for birds I'd go down into my garden and chuck it down there, rather than leaving it on a plate on top of a bbq. So strange

I reckon they’re feeding the birds. In their own weird way.

Yoyokitten · 19/01/2026 21:47

Well exactly.
There's nowt as queer as folks as my Yorkshire Nan used to say 😀

The chicken carcass on its own I would have guessed not wanting it being smelly in the inside bin and leaving it outside to cool and take to the outside bin. Casserole and bread though, no idea. When you see them next I’d warn them that you’ve seen foxes lurking around and have seen rats previously so they probably shouldn’t keep their food outside.

Leeds2 · 19/01/2026 21:48

Maybe they don’t have room in their fridge for some of the stuff.

Feeding birds and wildlife and want to watch/record them feeding

littlezozo · 19/01/2026 21:48

My kitchen is tiny and i put stuff on the bench just outside the back door when I need the work surface. Could this be the same?

BrunchBarBandit · 19/01/2026 21:49

Perhaps they are short of space inside. I put pans and roasting dishes outside on Xmas day to keep the worktops clear

Out of a casserole dish?🤔

I reckon it will be because they have ran out of room in the fridge and it's to keep stuff cold.

At Christmas, when the fridge is full I have a big Tupperware on the garden table outside with fruit and veg etc in to keep it cold

I thought maybe they left the chicken outside to cool down before chucking it in the bin, but the bread and casserole dish and random plates of food baffle me

But why would you want a cold casserole or cold whatever is in the pan? And a cold loaf of bread? It wouldnt be as puzzling if it was bottles of milk or juice

wheresmymojo · 19/01/2026 21:58

I assume it’s leftovers, kept cool (not enough!) outside as no room in the fridge and then they reheat it?

That makes sense, but not the bread

Keeping it cold. Maybe fridge is broken.
