To ask if you could study any university degree, what would it be?

Cost aside, of course. I’d choose to study History and Sociology.

This was my original choice, but my family said it would be useless in terms of job prospects.

If you could choose to study any course, what would it be?

I’d love to do a social work degree and be a social worker!

Me too! I’ve worked in family work for the last few years and I often get asked why don’t I train as a SW

Archaeology for me. Love anything to do with it

Ruthietuthie · 20/01/2026 00:20

@Changeychangersen, if you go to MIT's Opencourse Ware, you can take part in multiple degree level classes or just enjoy the reading lists and the lectures in your own time, all completely free.

I did Classics and made a career in it, but I'd love to do psychology or sociology and see how they might give me new insights into the Classical world

shiningstar2 · 20/01/2026 01:08

I did English Literature. If I could do another degree I would like either Philosophy and Ethics, Politics or Law.

Soashamed60 · 20/01/2026 01:18

French or music. Not for any career interests, but only because they were my two favourite subjects and I was good at them.
Gave them both up to get a steady office job so I could get married snd have a mortgage at 23.
Now I can hardly remember how to speak French and I can't even read music. I'd love to be a drumner in a band but at 60 that ship has sailed 😅

whatawalley · 20/01/2026 01:26

Archaeology, Classics or Geography.

FrodoBiggins · 20/01/2026 01:27

Medicine, but I wouldn't want to have to pass the exams! Just find it fascinating

ReignOfError · 20/01/2026 01:28

I went to university as a mature student and studied for pleasure, so I have a history degree, and it would always be my first choice. I wouldn’t mind adding something completely different like town planning or housing though.

Rookie93 · 20/01/2026 01:31

Did History, economics & philosophy for my degree. Would do Fine Art like a shot now, but am too old & its too expensive for fun.

Lifelover16 · 20/01/2026 01:43

I’d love to do art history and conservation. Researching and restoring paintings.

Friendlygingercat · 20/01/2026 02:35

If I were goinmg to uni now I would like to study AI. In my masters and doctorate I studed human computer interaction - a multi disciplinery area with strong applications to AI.

PandorasSockBox · 20/01/2026 06:17

@Conkersinautumn I did a great deal of Arthurian Legend & Romance as part of my degree in French & German. Ir was very interesting as there was quite a bit of social history and law involved.
If I were to do another degree it would probably be Meteorology or Computer Science and Law.

RhaenysRocks · 20/01/2026 07:00

Exeter do an MA in magic and dragons. Sadly I live 500 miles away and there's no distance learning option otherwise I'd 100% be on that.

LancashireButterPie · 20/01/2026 07:58

This is something I'm thinking about doing since I've retired. Originally studied OT, although I wanted to do nursing or dietetics but was talked out of it by parents. A decision I've always regretted.
Given my time again I'd probably have done the corsetry course at Leicester De Montford.
I'm actually considering a Fine Art degree for fun but it's so expensive and at my time of life it would be a luxury purchase!
Currently learning a language and doing print making as short courses.

Knittedanimal · 20/01/2026 08:01

Philosophy and English at Warwick.

MargoLivebetter · 20/01/2026 08:04

I read History & Politics first time around so I'd go back and do a Masters in it and then a PhD.

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 20/01/2026 08:14

I wish I had done English literature or photography. My degree was free, part time while I worked and purely to get a job - in social work.

I hope my DC get to have a fun and frivolous university experience.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 20/01/2026 08:25

I did mine in Marine Biology. I wanted to vet science but just missed the grades. Now, I work in construction PM, quite the side step. Most of my cohort ended up teaching.

I’d do Art History, then a Master in Conservation

This is a great field to work in and there are quite a few very good jobs out there in the field. It amazes me that many don't find conservation as a career when they are young. Birkbeck is often a starting point for a career in conservation with part time students learning on the job with support from their workplaces.

Paleontology. I so wish I'd been brave enough to do it when I was 18. Did teaching instead as it seemed the safer option. Bristol do palaeontology and evolution which sounds amazing!

PregnantPumpkin · 20/01/2026 09:26

Aberystwyth do a BA Intelligence and international security, sounds fascinating to me!

Miranda65 · 20/01/2026 09:30

History of Art. I love art, but wish I knew more.

Maybe have a look at the online courses offered nowadays. Many reputable establishments (eg Harvard MIT etc) have set these up - very flexible, cheap and incredibly well taught by professors with a desire to disseminate knowledge.

Agree, this sort of thing is a really good option for all the posters who would like to study a particular degree because they find the subject fascinating or wish they knew more about it rather than because they would want a career in the field. Likewise, many UK universities offer lifelong learning short courses based on the more accessible and practically-applied modules from their undergraduate programmes: I recently took courses in AI ethics and leadership with London School of Economics, and they also have some excellent options for things like health economics and social policy analysis and economics.
