Do you wash towels separately in their own load?

I've always bunged them in with the rest of the washing, am I doing it wrong?

No as i wash everything on 60

MuddlingThroughLife · 18/01/2026 18:46

Yes, on their own, 60 degree wash and no softener.

jamandcustard · 18/01/2026 18:49

I do, but only because they take up a full load on their own and I always do towels on the same day every week.

Really I'd like to do them in their own hot wash, no conditioner and then tumble dried. But I don't always have enough so they go in with the main wash sometimes (no conditioner when they're in) and I 'treat myself' when I have enough for a load. Cause I'm cool like that.

Me too!

FancyCatSlave · 18/01/2026 18:50

I was towels at 40 on a long cotton cycle. I was my clothes on a 30 quick wash. I can’t understand why anyone would wash them
together.

HOrg · 18/01/2026 18:51

Mine are white so I always wash them separately with a small amount of detergent and 100 ml of white vinegar to keep them soft and fluffy. They stay beautifully white for years.

QueenOfThorns · 18/01/2026 18:54

I wash mine separately because they’re a full load and because I put fabric conditioner in with the clothes. I do towels at 40 with laundry sanitiser.

Question to people who wash theirs at 60: what does the care label say? I’m pretty sure all mine say 40, which is why I don’t dare go hotter!

FancyCatSlave · 18/01/2026 18:57

I do wonder why washing machine manufacturers make machines with so many different programmes when the majority of the public seems to wash everything on the same one.

No wonder some people get through clothes so quickly, they wash things so badly and with no understanding of fabrics!

LizzybugMeeting · 18/01/2026 18:57

No..If they're white they go in with whites, if they aren't white, they go in with coloureds.

Only things I wash separately are drying up / tea towels , oven gloves and hand towels that live in the kitchen. Don't like the idea of them going in with grundies .

ETA - don't wash anything at 60 degrees. Only 30 or 40

Summerbay23 · 18/01/2026 18:58

On 40 degrees here and we’ve never been ill or had dodgy skin complaints.

Strangely I put bedding on 60 degrees though. I think on the basis that they probably harbour more sweat, skin cells, dirt.

2dogsandabudgie · 18/01/2026 19:00

I do towels and flannels together. Would not do them with other washing as would ruin other clothes. Towels are fluffy would not want bits to come off onto jumpers.

Okiedokie123 · 18/01/2026 19:01

I dont get the need for washing towels on a hotter setting?
I bung mine in with everything else at 30c. Air dry on airers adjacent to a dehumidifier.

If I do a load of just towels and blankets all at once my machine (its a Bosch) tends to have a hissy fit and not be able to spin properly. Hence much better to put them in with anything else that needs washing.

Member984815 · 18/01/2026 19:01

Colours ,darks , whites, towels but if there's only a few things all in together no softener

RavenhairedRachel · 18/01/2026 19:01

I usually do mine with rea towels and bath mats on a higher temperature

Zanatdy · 18/01/2026 19:02

If I had a lot, i’d wash together but generally they just go in with the clothes.

susiedaisy1912 · 18/01/2026 19:03

Yes I wash towels & dish cloths together on a long hot wash.

britneyisfreebutnotokay · 18/01/2026 19:04

Separate hotter wash. Didn’t used to but felt like I needed to up my game when I had my DC. Seems ridiculous now as they wash much better alone at a higher heat!! Also never ever mix my whites now. Used to bung them all in.

Christwosheds · 18/01/2026 19:05

Bombinia · 18/01/2026 09:43

Yes, because I do them on 60c and also because all our towels and dishcloths make a full load.

Same here. I do towels, flannels and tea towels etc at 60, so they all go in together (colours in one wash, whites in another).

Ooodelally · 18/01/2026 19:08

Towels, flannels, over gloves at 90 degrees with Dettol alongside bio laundry liquid.

(but everything else is on an “eco” wash at 40)

2dogsandabudgie · 18/01/2026 19:09

I wash underwear and socks together.
Jeans together.
Light coloured jumpers together.
Dark jumpers together.
Towels, flannels and bath mats together.
Duvet covers on their own.
Sheets and pillowcases together.
Tee shirts on their own (wait until I have a load)
Blouses/shirts together.

Same.

Towels shouldnt be visibly shedding fibres - but washing them separately doesnt actually solve the problem, it just means all those little bits will be shedding and going into the water system...... the rivers, the oceans etc.

BlackCat14 · 18/01/2026 19:11

If it happens that a few towels need washing at once, I’d do them alone but usually just with everything else.

A few people have said no conditioner… I didnt know this was a thing! Should I be washing my towels without conditioner?

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 18/01/2026 19:14

Just out of interest why do people feel towels need a hotter wash ? They’ve just been used to dry clean bodies. I just wash mine with anything else that needs doing on my normal 40 wash .

I do (only) my towels at 60 degrees. It's recommended that you run your machine at 60 once a month for maintenance so I just wash towels at the same time. I make sure it's a long wash so that any gunk hopefully gets rinsed away.

I have towels that actually say on the label not to use fabric conditioner. It stops them from absorbing water.
