Hi I’m just about to turn 60 and I have excessive peach fuzz on my face and neck and now I’m getting thick coarse white and black hairs coming out of my chin! Waxing doesn’t shift them! Will dermoplaning help or make them look shaved?Any other ideas?

OakElmAsh · 17/01/2026 22:25

Dermoplaning will get rid of them, but you will need to do it very frequently, up to daily. It's quick though

Sunshineandrainbow · 17/01/2026 22:31

Could you pay for laser?

orangelion66 · 17/01/2026 22:40

i do a mix of electrolysis and shaving. Once shaved it’s obvious which are the ones that need treatment as they grow through prickly.

unfortunately the laser place wouldn’t do my chin as I have a mix of blonde and dark, they said there was too much risk of the blonde ones getting ‘activated’ and getting worse.

Deadlytrout · 17/01/2026 22:52

I just shave every morning when I wash my face. Simple. No drama.

Littlemisscapable · 17/01/2026 22:57

Yes dermaplaning with razors from amazon. They do go blunt quite quickly though and you do need to do every other day. I have very sensitive skin and this doesn't have any impact.

Bikergran · 18/01/2026 09:16

Electrolysis from a good beautician, plus keep good tweezers on you at all times. Strong sunlight or using a small torch under your chin and a magnifying mirror makes thrm easier to see. They seem to grow hugely in no time, so it's constant vigilance!!!!

falalalalalalalallama · 18/01/2026 09:34

I've had a lady beard with wiry hairs for years now. They're not dark enough for electrolysis so I used to faff about with plucking and creams.

Now I simply shave them off every day. Simple.

There's a reason men shave and don't fart around with time consuming expensive treatments. It's easy, cheap and effective.

thepuzzlewontpiece · 18/01/2026 09:34

I just wax them, once every two weeks. Does the job.

I thought electrolysis worked for fair or white hair, isn’t it IPL laser treatment where the hair has to have pigment for the hair root to be inactivated?

BCBird · 18/01/2026 09:40

I had laser. It works on dark hair. Won't work on white though. I went to Skin

Simplestars · 18/01/2026 09:44

Electrolysis was permanent. Did take about 8 months of visits. Weekly then fortnightly then monthly.
Permanent and gone for ever.

Astra53 · 18/01/2026 09:44

I have opted for laser diode treatment to kill them off once and for all. The hairs in one area were so coarse and sharp that they were causing bleeding and infection. I have had 3 treatments out of 6 and it is definitely doing the job!

CrotchetyQuaver · 18/01/2026 09:45

Threading

LittleArithmetics · 18/01/2026 09:49

I had electrolysis and it's honestly been life changing.

That's laser you're thinking of. Electrolysis works on all types of hair.

If having electrolysis, you shouldn't pluck in between appointments as you want the hairs to be there ready for the next treatment. You should shave in between (and let them grow for a few days before the appointment).

I wish shaving was normalised with adverts etc, and talking about irl. I’ve had coarse, thick dark hairs all over chin since my twenties (worse after having DS but male doctor said testosterone was acceptable level & ‘it’s just cosmetic’ and treatment not available on nhs - no idea how much it can affect you mentally as a woman). Now I’m fifty and shave every morning and again in evening if I’m going out. With a man’s razor.

The cosmetic thing annoys me greatly…I recently saw the dermatologist and he said he could easily remove an unsightly mark I’ve had on my face since early childhood, that people had rudely commented on multiple times over the years…why has no GP ever even offered to refer me before!

Same.

Ketzele · 18/01/2026 10:04

I spent my 50s in a state of eternal vigilance, tweezers at hand. Now I'm in my 60s I just shave. So quick and easy. I was reluctant because it felt masculine and because of those myths about it causing more hair growth. I did buy a nice razor, wouldn't want a cheap disposable hacking my chin about.

PermanentTemporary · 18/01/2026 10:09

I have PCOS and I shave at least once a day, sometimes a top up. It was twice a day without fail eight years ago, and then I bought a Philips Lumea, and after a steady two years with that in lots of areas including my face, it was clear in some bits and was significantly less dense on my face. I stopped bothering with the Lumea for a long time but have recently restarted.

Have never heard of the white hairs being ‘activated’ by it, thought it was just ineffective on them.

I think my skin is better for the shaving but obviously that’s not the case for everyone.

The activation is called ‘paradoxical hypertrichosis’ apparently, where blonde hairs can get darker and longer. It only happens on hormonal areas, the chin and neck seems prone to it for some people. I do have a lot of long blonde fluff along with the black hairs, and am mid-50s so is probably why the beautician wouldn’t do my chin. She was happy to do the top lip though.

But if they grow back darker then they can be IPL'd or Lasered surely?

I've always had facial hair issues since a child and had a Lumea for years. It changed my life (was shaving legs every day in Summer for example now shave once every few months).

Then I started getting a vellus (blonde) hair issue on my face with blonde hair growing long.
I don't want to shave as PP say to because it DOES make it grow back more stubbly, whatever anyone wants to kid themselves.
MIL has shaved for years. I'm French and kiss hello and when I kiss her cheek hello you can feel the bristle even if she shaved that morning.

If anyone can actually stop fucking about and invent a solution to blonde, vellus hair then they should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I cold wax and pluck my beard and tash, every 3 or so weeks.
Shaving is every day and I hate it when it starts to be prickley.
