Is it s bruise, are you on any medication

Secretseverywhere · 17/01/2026 13:58

No photo but my blood test marks have varied from a tiny pin prick to a massive tennis ball size bruise when they’ve managed to pop through the vein and everything in between.

If it is a bruise, yes it is. Not seen a photo yet though.

DameOfThrones · 17/01/2026 14:10

I can see the photo.

And yes, as someone who has 3-monthly blood tests, it can be very normal.

Generally depends on who takes it as some are more skilled than others.

DameOfThrones · 17/01/2026 14:12

Also, did you post a thread the other night with a similar photo, asking if it looked like a blood test mark or a cannula?

I remember thinking it was a bit odd but the OP never came back.

Greenlandss · 17/01/2026 14:13

Sometimes I can have a bruise like that, sometimes less.

EveryKneeShallBow · 17/01/2026 14:14

Definitely. I have blood taken twice a week currently and they are really struggling to find a clean spot to use. My arms, hands and ankles are all purple and I have a big superficial thrombophlebitis on the back of my hand.

MargaretThursday · 17/01/2026 14:21

Blood tests can leave huge bruises. I've had no sign, hardly even a pin prick, through to bruise covering my elbow all the way round the arm. Weirdest one of the the dc had was when they had a blood test in their hand, and there was a massive bruise on their underside of wrist and palm of the hand.

It does depend I think on many things, including the skill of the blood taker.

Blushingm · 17/01/2026 14:23

Yes

Villanellesproudmum · 17/01/2026 14:24

It can be yes

Alloveragain44 · 17/01/2026 14:25

Perfectly normal

AnSolas · 17/01/2026 14:30

Yes
Its likely the needles entry/removal has created a small bleed into the surrounding area.
It should follow your normal healing process re timings and colour changes.

user1471538275 · 17/01/2026 14:42

Fairly small really - I foolishly went to the gym directly after a blood test and ended up with a whole forearm bruise. My bad!

Loads of things affect it - not just the person taking the blood - very much the person who the blood is being taken from and what they do before/after/any medication too.

Why are you asking?

BowlyLarr · 17/01/2026 14:45

I’ve had some astonishing bruises from blood tests - remember once most of my arm went purple. There was a morbid fascination to watching it develop! I think it’s just luck really.

HighStreetOtter · 17/01/2026 15:03

Bruising is often worse if you bend your arm afterwards which quite a few people do.

LIZS · 17/01/2026 19:30

Can be. Dh has deep and tricky veins so often needs more than one go and has had some cracking bruises.

Cat1504 · 17/01/2026 19:32

I’ve had some big bruises from bloods

This, sometimes they hit the veins less well than others, my dad had an huge bruise after a blood test.

when I had my first daughter, the cannulas were sited so badly, I was bruised elbow to wrist on both arms.

tellingly, the one put in on the back of my hand by the anaesthetist left a pin prick of a scab 😂

Vaxtable · 19/01/2026 19:23

Yes

sometimes I have nothing, sometimes a massive bruise across my arm, no rhyme or reason

snowibunni · 19/01/2026 20:12

Yup, normal. I have blood tests frequently, and the aftermath ranges from nothing (and I always email the surgery saying how excellent the hcp was!) to a bruise from elbow to shoulder. Not sure why that happened as I don't think anything was done differently! I do tend to bruise at the drop of a hat though.

Zanatdy · 19/01/2026 20:16

Yes, i’ve had a hematoma from a blood test. Had some huge bruises.
