To think someone stole it

I moved house last week. My ex husband organised it because we have an adult autistic son and I am his carer. My other son came down from 300 miles away to help and also had some help from friends. There was a large van and several cars involved. I am a fan of Ikea Kallax and have one very large unit and four smaller ones. Since the move I only have three smaller ones. I did a mutual exchange and the next day took some bits the other people had left behind and she gave me some stuff that had been left behind by us, including a quantity of alcohol so I am pretty sure she’s honest, plus I actually went inside and would have noticed if my unit was still there. I didn’t notice it missing at first but as I have been unpacking it became obvious that there were only three of these smaller units. However when I texted my ex he promised me that the van had been empty when he left. Somebody has taken it and I actually don’t mind, I told him that, there wouldn’t have been room for it, as I had downsized. Can anyone think of any alternative explanations?

every sounds a bit chaotic. Could it have ended up in the wrong place by a mistake?

ElizabethsTailor · 17/01/2026 12:54

Were there other locations used while moving things about? Could it be that at some point it was put beside the van while things were packed in, but then left at the side of the road?

Leave anything outside my house and it'll end up gone within minutes.

Do you think someone might've taken it while it was waiting to go into the van?

LaundryScales · 17/01/2026 12:57

Presumably either you or your DH did a last walk through of the house before handing over the keys?

If the house was empty (and it’s your/your DH’s responsibility if not) then either:

It was left on the van accidentally

Your DH gave it away

It got damaged and someone didn’t want to own up so disposed of it.

One of the helpers took it.

Left on the street accidently then stolen by a stranger.

MrsSlocombesCat · 17/01/2026 13:39

No it couldn’t have been left on the street because we would have seen it. It was too big for a car anyway, and there was so many milling about I don’t think it could have been missed. The guys helping my XH and him walked around the house and told me it was clear (although a few things got left in cupboards). My son and I went off to get some things from the shop and when we got back my XH said they’d finished and were off now. So the same people who were in the van confirmed that the old place was empty and that they had unloaded everything into the house. I honestly don’t think it would have been taken from the street, I had thrown a lot of stuff on to the front garden for a man with a van to collect the week before and there were things that could be used including furniture, I was downsizing so couldn’t take everything with me. But none of that went missing.

I have a couple of four-hole kallaxes and they are very light, I can lift them with one hand, so I think you're right!

Mine are 8 hole so not quite so light and also have a few doors on.

No, all packed at old house and unloaded at new house. There were four people loading the van so one of them would have noticed it, and pointed it out.
