Jacket potato for lunch

Biscuitz1 · 16/01/2026 13:13

Just really annoyed right now as someone from work believes it is perfectly appectable to put a potato for 15 mins in the microwave!

There is already a queue as it is.

Well, they can't possibly be heating that up for just one person (unless they are overweight?). That's lunch for two people, at least.

Oh, please... must you? 🤦‍♀️

Elishiva · 16/01/2026 20:43

Someone at my work does this, it is a bit rude but I try not to let it annoy me, my lunch is one hour so I just come back a while later.
She is the only person I’ve ever seen/known to eat a jacket potato straight out of the microwave so I’m wondering if it’s the same person, my one doesn’t even put butter on it.

Doone22 · 16/01/2026 21:36

I feel a bit sorry for them really, it's so hard to eat a cheap decent lunch and they probably feel really bad for holding people up.
Can't you get a second microwave in?

Most people I work with take lunch at different times every day depending on what is going on that day. You're being flippant with comments about setting up in the kitchen, in most offices you can see the kitchen, so you can see if there is a queue, or a quick walk to the kitchen will confirm if there is a queue or not. I've never worked in an office with set lunch times, we've got 1 microwave for about 40 people and there's never issues 🤷

In my almost 50 years of working life I never worked in an office where you could see the kitchen, in some places it was quite a walk to get there, and every office had set lunch hours - at least for those in administration.

Why do you feel sorry for them? All they have to do is cook the potato at home and then re-heat it at work. It's absolute nonsense that they will be harmed by re-heating it. My local supermarket sells them pre-cooked with fillings from the fridge.

Ouch you got me! I defintely lied and said it was 15 mins instead of 15 seconds.

Like one poster pointed out, she is cooking it raw.
Her response is she cant reheat after cooking because of bacterial growth?
She has tried to use the microwave 10 mins before lunch start but cant always get there in time.

Bacterial growth? What on earth is she talking about? Of course a potato can be safely reheated.

Bacterial growth?!?!?! She's a joker. And an anti social one too.
15 mins hogging the microwave is not OK! I'm with you OP.

My microwave is 800W. A large spud takes 6 minutes max.

Mine takes around 15 mins. It's a cheap one, posh ones are quicker.

Bloody hell must be horrible a jacket only take 7 to 9 mins depending on size.

NiceAndWarmAndDry · 16/01/2026 22:46

Can she cook it at (say) 1130 and reheat at 1230?

I said my office! We don't have a canteen, we have a floor that can have up to 100 people but usually less, and the kitchen is down one end so yes we can see it. Crikey, the anger on this thread about a microwave 😂

You literally said “from most offices you can see the kitchen”. Re-read the post I quoted from you.

i always used to take a potato to microwave at work when i first left home. 15mins though?? mine only took a few mins but maybe that’s why i was still hungry after 🤣

Yeah, 8 mins = perfect spud 🥔

I wouldn’t eat a microwaved jacket potato through choice but I can’t imagine how awful one cooked for 5 mins would be. I have started them in a microwave for 5 mins and then in the oven for 90 mins or so.

The oven for 90 minutes ???

Tulipvase · 17/01/2026 09:55

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 17/01/2026 09:08

The oven for 90 minutes ???

Yeah! Smother the skin in olive oil and salt and pepper. Lovely crispy skin and fluffy inside.

If l cooked an average sized potato in the oven for 90 minutes after starting it in the microwave it would come out like a lump of coal !! And l don’t know anyone, myself included, who could afford to have the oven on for that amount of time, just for a spud.

Sahara123 · 17/01/2026 10:38

Not far off £4 for 4 potatoes though !

I’m with you on this, I cook mine for well over an hour. Or did, we’re temporarily in a rental house with shocking insulation and our bills are huge! I have begrudgingly given in to an air fryer to cut oven use, I still don’t like it much and can’t wait to get back to a proper oven. However I will admit it does good jacket potatoes, I cut them in half too for maximum crunchy area ! A microwave potato is indeed a sad thing .

LyndaSnellsSniff · 17/01/2026 11:22

This would cause a riot at my workplace. I'm a teaching assistant and we have a 30 mins timetabled lunch break along with 30 mins timetabled playground duty. We also have the School Mafia who watch carefully to see who takes an extra 2 minutes for lunch, then bitch about them.

Someone hogging the microwave for 15 mins would be lynched for sure.

Tulipvase · 17/01/2026 11:23

But it’s a jacket potato, not an average sized potato. They prob are quite large to be fair, but isn’t that the point of a jacket potato?

Tbf, it’s prob more like 90 mins without the microwave.

I’m not rich by any standards but yes, luckily I don’t ever actually think about the cost of using the oven. We have a range and often have both ovens on.

also I’m not cooking just one, it would be 4 or 5 as it would be for dinner generally.

92p per potato strikes me as a bargain when you consider the number of potatoes that I used to throw away because they had gone bad/sprouted before I had a chance to eat them. I always keep a box in my freezer.

I actually think taking a jacket potato to eat for lunch at work is beyond weird - what is wrong with a sandwich, a wrap, soup, or a boxed salad? But whatever.

And they’ll all take longer

Yes most offices I have worked from, the kitchen is always a little room at the end of the floor plate/office, and each floor plate/office has it's own kitchen.

Biscuitz1 · 17/01/2026 15:33

MrsClatterbuck · 16/01/2026 13:23

Maybe if you put your item in along with their baked potato saying sorry but don't have time to wait 15 minutes they might get the message.

This is genius

No way does a jacket potato take 15 minutes in the microwave. 5 minutes max. Massive exaggeration.

It certainly does take more than 5, even a frozen pre-cooked potato takes 5 minutes, 4 if thawed. Very unreasonable for them to use the microwave for so long though, would be simple enough for them to get frozen potatoes or cook them beforehand.
