To be concerned that The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Bill has disappeared? It is emergency legislation and time critical

The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Bill passed its first reading this week.Second and third reading dates have not been scheduled. Really?

This is emergency legislation. It will hold up offers for foundation and specialty training posts starting in August 2026.

My concern is why there is a delay? Who has requested a delay and why?

This is emergency legislation that gives UK Medical Graduates (UKMGs) (and some other groups) priority for foundation and training posts.

This will reverse the damage done by the Tories dropping The Resident Labour Market Test in January 2020 which has resulted in International Medical Graduates (IMGs) competing on an equal footing with UK Medical Graduates for Specialty Training posts which produce our future GPs and consultant medics and surgeons.

In 2025 63% of applications for Specialty Training were from International Medical Graduates. Now the UK now has unemployed Resident doctors as too many doctors are applying for too few training posts.

The UK medical graduates have cost the taxpayer hundreds of thousands to train and who have personal debt of around 100k accruing interest of 8%.

195 other countries prioritise their own medical graduates.

Wasn’t this part of the deal doctors said no to?

This will show the progress of the bill. Looks like the second reading is scheduled for the 26th Jan. https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/4062 It’s a normal amount of time between first and second reading. Quiet fast even.

it would be very unusual to announce dates for all future stages the week a bill gets its first reading. It has a second reading date confirmed.

Thanks. The bill needs to be passed quickly as releasing offers for foundation training and specialty training will be delayed.
